    Stiliyan Petrov
Former Celtic midfielder on Sky Sports

Everything about Celtic's style is through the middle, but there are always option in the wide areas and it's there that they overload.

They are so good with the timing of the runs, getting in the right areas at the right times, it's how they always have a solution.

Celtic stretch teams and create pockets of opportunities.

  3. Postpublished at 12:14 Greenwich Mean Time 2 January 2023

    Rangers v Celtic (12:30)

    Rory Loy
Former Rangers forward on BBC Sportsound

I think Rangers need to start well. I believe they will need to stand up and be counted. They're going to have to get on the ball and make things happen. I believe they're capable of that.

  4. Celtic's fast startspublished at 12:11 Greenwich Mean Time 2 January 2023

    Rangers v Celtic (12:30)

Twelve of Celtic’s last 13 league goals scored against Rangers have come in the first half of matches, with the only exception being David Turnbull’s 78th minute goal in the 4-0 win in September this season.

  5. 'Celtic almost flawless'published at 12:08 Greenwich Mean Time 2 January 2023

    Rangers v Celtic (12:30)

    Leanne Crichton
    Ex-Scotland international on BBC Sportsound

Celtic have been almost flawless, but they do concede goals. They've only kept two clean sheets in their last six - Rangers have three - but Celtic's character at the moment is tremendous.

  6. Postecoglou expects 'aggressive' Rangerspublished at 12:05 Greenwich Mean Time 2 January 2023

    Rangers v Celtic (12:30)

Celtic manager Ange Postecoglou has been speaking to the BBC ahead of kick-off, and began by paying tribute to Frank McGarvey, who died on Sunday.

"A sad start [to the year] for the Celtic family," Postecoglou said.

"Our thoughts and prayers to Frank's family and friends. He's an absolute star of this football club, he'll be missed by everyone but never forgotten - a person and player that made a real impact.

"Really happy that he got a chance to say goodbye to Celtic Park a few weeks back, and more importantly he felt the love that exists for him."

On picking Alistair Johnston for his debut at right-back, Postecoglou said: "[Alistair Johnston has] trained with us the last few weeks and he's worked hard. When you play for Celtic, irrespective of when you make your debut, it's always a big game, none bigger than this.

"Juranovic wasn't 100% either, so we made the decision to put Alistair in. He's ready to go. He's a good defender, he's good getting forward, he's adjusting to the way we play - he's not there yet, it'll take a little bit of time. He knows what it's like to play in big games.

"It's a fixture that gathers worldwide attention. From our perspective it's about playing our football, being disciplined in our approach and make sure we're focused on our game.

"We respect the opponent, respect the venue - it's a tough place to come. Rangers will be up for it, we will be too."

  7. Can Rangers find 'rage for victory'?published at 12:02 Greenwich Mean Time 2 January 2023

    Rangers v Celtic (12:30)

    Tom English
    BBC Scotland's chief sports writer

Man for man, you'd pick Celtic all day long on Monday, but within Rangers there must be a feeling that there is no tomorrow in the league if they lose. That desperation can give a side an edge, a rage for victory that's hard to handle.

  8. Beale wants 'front foot' Rangerspublished at 12:00 Greenwich Mean Time 2 January 2023

    Rangers v Celtic (12:30)

Rangers manager Michael Beale is looking forward to his first derby as manager.

    "I'm really excited," he said.

"It's a game that's watched worldwide, it's very special and it showcases Scottish football round the world.

"There are two excellent teams today. My team has a little bit more to prove and I hope they go and prove it.

"If we win, there's still a mountain to climb. If we lose, the mountain gets a little bit higher. Coming into the job a month ago, I had to steady the ship, recoup some players from injury and win some football games.

"So far, so good. We need to improve and get stronger. We can't be in this position, this far behind, moving forward. That will still be the job after today.

"It's a game for goals and excitement. They're a good team with a good coach and we want to show we are as well. We're at home, we want to attack on the front foot and I've picked a team that will do that."

  9. Beale must ask for braverypublished at 11:57 Greenwich Mean Time 2 January 2023

    Rangers v Celtic (12:30)

    Neil McCann
Former Rangers winger on BBC Sportsound

It's not been sparkling, but Michael Beale's been able to extract something from deep within. I think he's still looking for cohesion. You saw at Aberdeen they found a way to win. He needs to ask his players if they're brave enough for this environment now.

  10. Can Beale make it five in a row?published at 11:54 Greenwich Mean Time 2 January 2023

    Rangers v Celtic (12:30)

Michael Beale has managed to steady the ship at Rangers in his first four games, winning all of them.

It's not been totally convincing, but with lots of injuries and having inherited a squad low in confidence he's done what's needed.

Today is a different ball game, but the rewards are even greater. A win here would really launch his managerial career.

The Rangers line-up has a really settled look about it. To be honest, they haven't been playing as a settled bunch. It's welcome to see recognised centre backs there.

  15. Johnston makes Celtic debutpublished at 11:40 Greenwich Mean Time 2 January 2023

    Rangers v Celtic (12:30)

Celtic boss Ange Postecoglou has made a bold call by handing a debut to new signing Alistair Johnston, who featured for Canada at he World Cup.

He starts at right-back instead of Josip Juranovic. James Forrest is also preferred to Jota on the right wing.

It's a strong looking bench, where newly recruited centre-back Yuki Kobayashi will sit and await his debut.

Ryan Jack and Alex Lowry drop out, with Glen Kamara taking the former's place in midfield, and Fashion Sakala coming in for the latter in attack.

There's a welcome sight for Rangers fans too, with strikers Kemar Roofe and Antonio Colak back on the bench after lengthy injury spells.
