  2. Davidson 'expects better'published at 17:56 Greenwich Mean Time 2 January 2023

FT St Johnstone 0-1 Dundee United

St Johnstone manager Callum Davidson says he "expects better" from St Johnstone after they lost to Dundee United at McDiarmid Park:

"It was a scrappy game," he said. "We gave the ball away a lot. Really disappointed to come away with a defeat.

"The goal comes a little bit against the run of play, but we weren't good enough today. First half wasn't acceptable - we didn't keep the ball, we didn't pass it.

"If you don't keep the ball then you don't win games of football. We got better second half and it's a bit of a sickener, we concede the goal late on.

"A draw was probably a fair result, but we've got to dust ourselves down. We've got a good bunch of players in there, we expect better and they expect better for themselves."

  3. 'Too open for me' - Livi boss Martindalepublished at 17:54 Greenwich Mean Time 2 January 2023

    FT: Livingston 1-1 Motherwell

Livingston manager David Martindale admits it was a very "frustrating" afternoon for his side.

"I think over the piece we are disappointed to miss two penalties," he told BBC Sportsound.

"Motherwell did the basics a little bit better than us at times and there really wasn't a lot in the game.

"We changed the personnel in the second half to try and alter the flow of the game but it stayed quite open and too open at times for my liking."

  4. Hibs boss Johnson 'sick of the mediocrity'published at 17:53 Greenwich Mean Time 2 January 2023

    FT: Hearts 3-0 Hibernian

Hibernian manager Lee Johnson on Sportsound : “The first half was sorry, it wasn’t enough.

“We had a couple of big opportunities to score but inevitably they were more clinical than us. They looked tidier in those second balls.

“Key moments in the game they delivered and we didn’t. I think that is a little bit of the story at the moment at the club. It’s a fantastic football club but we’re not doing enough at the moment. I think that showed today in the first half.

“There’s no doubt mentally we’ve got to be stronger as a team. I’m sick to death of the mediocrity in that final third. We lift everyone by getting into the final third, but the final action is the most important action.

“We’re brave and bold when we’re two goals down. You’ve got to be the best player on the pitch at 0-0.”

  5. 'Not a time to panic' - Goodwinpublished at 17:48 Greenwich Mean Time 2 January 2023

    FT: Aberdeen 0-0 Ross County

Aberdeen manager Jim Goodwin tells BBC Scotland: "It was clear we lacked the bit of quality and composure when we did get into the final third.

"It's disappointing not to win, but coming in off the back of four straight defeats it was important that we put a stop to that run we were in.

"We managed to do that, we've got a clean sheet, just unfortunate that at the other end of the pitch we weren't able to come up with the solutions needed.

"I'm not concerned about it in the slightest [crowd displeasure]. Supporters at every club have the right to voice their opinions.

"I thought against Kilmarnock it was as poor as we've been but I can take positives from the other games. It's certainly not a time to panic.

  6. Fox pleased with 'big three points'published at 17:47 Greenwich Mean Time 2 January 2023

FT: St Johnstone 0-1 Dundee United

Dundee United head coach Liam Fox has been talking to Sportsound following his side's vital win at McDiarmid Park.

"Delighted," he said. "A really big three points for us today.

"The overall performance - we were good first half, and then second half we had to dig in. We got the goal at a good time and then we had to defend our box.

"I thought [Tony Watt's] overall performance was really good - players have come in today and stepped up.

"There's still loads of work to do. We'll enjoy this week and then we'll get back to work."

  7. Robinson hails 'fantastic' St Mirrenpublished at 17:44 Greenwich Mean Time 2 January 2023

    FT: Kilmarnock 0-0 St Mirren

St Mirren boss Stephen Robinson tells BBC Sportsound: "It's what we're very good at. It's our DNA. We're very good at defending. We've shown we can go and get points away from home now. 90 minutes with 10 men, it's fantastic how well the back five defended - to a man.

"Curtis Main was like two men up top, and ultimately we probably had the best chance of the game towards the end.

"I love Ethan [Erhahon, who was sent off]. He's a kid that's been brilliant for me all season. If it is a red, it's a lesson for him and the boys have dug him out of a hole."

  8. Neilson pleased with turnaroundpublished at 17:41 Greenwich Mean Time 2 January 2023

    FT: Hearts 3-0 Hibs

Hearts manager Robbie Neilson told Sportsound: “I thought Hibs actually started the game a bit better, I was pleased with how we flipped that at the start of the game and to get the result was outstanding for us.

“(Zander Clark) is a Scottish international, he’s played at the top level in Scotland for a long time and in Europe so we knew he would do well for us. There’s always a lot of pressure when you’re taking over from someone of Craig (Gordon)’s stature, but I thought he handled it very well today. The double-save at the end will just boost his confidence as well."

Hearts are a club working in synergy with one another.

Hibs, it isn't working like that. There are some good players in the squad but it's all too scattergun. It's all a bit rudderless.

    That comes from the top.

Hearts are five clear with a game in hand. Yes they have more injuries. But since the break Hearts have been brilliant, they've been scoring goals.

Lawrence Shankland has 18 goals. He'll get to 20.

  12. Maloney on busy day of actionpublished at 17:27 Greenwich Mean Time 2 January 2023

Ex-Hibernian manager Shaun Maloney tells BBC Sport Scotland that there will be "a lot of hurt" from the squad after their Edinburgh derby defeat.

"Rangers v Celtic was just a brilliant game of football, so much happening within it," he said. "And then the Edinburgh derby was a really difficult day obviously.

"It felt like a really big set of fixtures for so many teams likeDundee United and Aberdeen too.

"That’s obviously a close one for me. It’s a really tough day, when you lose these matches it’s really difficult.

"It’s a really difficult day for the support and I obviously know a lot of the players so it will be a lot of hurt in that dressing room at the moment.

On Hearts, he added: "They recruit really well, I think they did last year, in the Championship and again this year. They go for players who are ready to perform now.

"Shankland and Snodgrass have come in and made really big impacts and even with the injuries they have they seem to be continuing or even picking up form."

Shaun Maloney will be on Sportscene tonight, which is on BBC Scotland at 19:15 GMT.

  14. 'A lot of disappointed people' - Daviespublished at 17:21 Greenwich Mean Time 2 January 2023

    Rangers 2-2 Celtic FT

The Rangers defender Ben Davies has been speaking to BBC Scotland after they were held to a 2-2 draw by Celtic.

He was asked what the mood was like in the Rangers dressing room after the late goal from Kyogo Furuhashi denied the Ibrox side victory.

"I think there’s a lot of disappointed people," he said.

"We showed more in the second half what we are all about and I think we can take positives from that.

"But obviously to be close to a win that would have been a really important win and then not quite get it is disappointing."

Many felt Rangers needed to win to keep the title race alive, but Davies is certainly not for throwing in the towel just yet.

"It’s obviously the same as it was before the game [nine-point gap], so we haven’t cut the gap - they haven’t lengthened the gap. Still a lot of football to be played and we have to play them again.

"I think we started the second half really well. I think that Fashion [Sakala] was brilliant all day and he set up the first goal and won the penalty for the second goal."

"When Ibrox is like that it must be really hard to play against and stop.

"We have seen positives today, ultimately we are disappointed but I think going forward there are positives to take."

  15. McGregor hails 'massive' Kyogo goalpublished at 17:18 Greenwich Mean Time 2 January 2023

    FT: Rangers 2-2 Celtic

Earlier this afternoon, the Celtic captain Callum McGregor was in no doubt about the importance of the late Kyogo equaliser which earned his side a 2-2 draw against Rangers to maintain their nine-point gap at the top.

"Massive, just in the context of the season it keeps us in the same place as we were coming into the game," he said.

"In terms of performance we could have been a lot better, but it’s a big goal at the end of the game."

"Again the boys showed their character to keep going even when things are against us and performance levels aren’t quite where they should be."

While McGregor admits Celtic were not at their best he says it is just another part of the football learning process they are on as a team.

"I don’t think we claim to be a team that has all the answers all the time.

"We’re always learning, always humble enough to understand that we can get better as players and as a group and unit too. So it’s another learning experience."

"When you come here you have to be on the money to make sure you get a result.

"They played well after 20-25 minutes they got a hold of the game and we never quite got to grips with it and wrestled back the game.

"As long as we do what we want to do and focus on ourselves hopefully come the end of the season we will have a good outcome."

Huge cheers from the travelling United fans on the final whistle. A chorus of boos from the home fans, with Saints slumping to their third straight defeat. It's been that kind of streaky season for them.

Prior to those defeats, they were unbeaten in six with four wins after ending three straight defeats again.

United's numbers are simple. One goal from Tony Watt, three precious points, and two wins and a draw since the World Cup break.

Things are looking up for new boss Liam Fox, as he puts more space between his side and bottom club Ross County
