  1. 1998 World Cup defeat 'burns in my mind - US coachpublished at 15:35 Greenwich Mean Time 28 November 2022

Iran v United States (Tuesday, 19.00 GMT)

A bit more from the US camp and coach Gregg Berhalter's pre-match press conference in what is a crunch game for both sides in Group B - a win for either side will seem them advance to the knockout stages.

The US and Iran last met at the World Cup in 1998, with the Iranians securing a 2-1 victory and Berhalter covered the game as a television commentator.

"That game sticks in my mind, it burns in my mind," he said.

"What I saw from the opening whistle is one team that really wanted to win the game and one team that didn't want to win the game.

"Iran wanted to win the game with everything -- they played really committed, really focused from the first whistle.

"For us to win the game tomorrow that's going to have to be the mindset of our group ... We don't want to make the mistakes of the past."

  2. US coach apologises for social media upsetting Iranpublished at 15:32 Greenwich Mean Time 28 November 2022

US Soccer officials sparked uproar over the weekend after posting an Iranian flag without its Allah symbol on the federation's social media feeds.

They said it was a gesture of solidarity with Iranian women protesters, however Iran's football federation complained to Fifa and branded it a "disrespectful act".

Coach Gregg Berhalter has now apologised for the furore triggered by that social media post ahead of the US clash with Iran.

"Sometimes things are out of our control," Berhalter said during a pre-match press conference.

"We're not focused on those outside things and all we can do is apologise on behalf of the players and the staff, but it's not something that we were a part of.

"We had no idea what US Soccer put out. The staff, the players, we had no idea. For us our focus is on this match and I don't want to sound aloof, or we're not caring by saying that.

"Of course are thoughts are with the Iranian people, the whole country, and everyone. But our thoughts are only on this match."

  3. Brazil and Swiss eye the knock-outspublished at 15:28 Greenwich Mean Time 28 November 2022

    Brazil v Switzerland (16.00 GMT)

Game three on this jam-packed day of World Cup action sees Brazil taking on Switzerland.

A win for either side would see them become the second side to reach the last 16 of the tournament, following reigning champions France.

Brazil will start the game as favourites - no side has ever gone 17 games without defeat in the group stages of the World Cup. They have the chance to do so today.

Fullkrug's lengthy backstory includes a love of the Rocky theme tune, an explanation of his nickname 'Gap', and an alarming story from his youth days.

    FT: Cameroon 3-3 Serbia

Following the pre-game drama in the Cameroon camp, the Indomitable Lions' match was even more remarkable.

They came from 3-1 down to record a point which keeps their World Cup campaign alive - their second strike was a brilliant chip from striker Vincent Aboubakar.

  7. Onana 'wanted to step out' of Cameroon squadpublished at 15:13 Greenwich Mean Time 28 November 2022

    FT: Cameroon 3-3 Serbia

More on one of the biggest off-pitch stories from the World Cup today - Cameroon goalkeeper Andre Onana walking out on the squad before their 3-3 draw with Serbia .

Cameroon coach Rigobert Song says Onana asked not to play their second group match at the World Cup amid reports of a falling out between the pair in Qatar.

"He is an important player, but we are in a difficult tournament," said Song.

"I know what I have to do, and that is to ensure that the team takes precedence over any individuals.

"Andre wanted to step out and we accepted that position. In a squad, discipline is important."

    FT: South Korea 2-3 Ghana

My word, the 2022 World Cup has certainly exploded into life on the pitch today.

Ghana were pegged back to 2-2 by a quickfire double from Korea's Cho Gue-sung, however a slick finish by Mohammed Kudus has earned all three points for the Africans.

Korea manager Paulo Bento was sent off after the final whistle for furiously arguing with referee Anthony Taylor on the pitch.

Yet more sensational entertainment in Qatar. Relive the action and follow the fall-out here.

Bale is asked about the squad being treated to some Welsh roast lamb cooked by a chef in order to give a taste of home.

The forward says he didn't have any but adds: "It was great to have him come in and cook for the lads.

"We had a little boost, hopefully it gives us a better performance - we'd love nothing more. We're trying to keep spirits high.

"We are happy to be here, but will give everything to qualify for tomorrow."

“It’s going to be a difficult game whoever we come up against."

And what about England? They're clearly overwhelming favourites to win tomorrow, so what of Wales' chances?

"This tournament has shown anyone is beatable, so of course England are beatable," says Page.

"They’ve got a wonderful pool of players… but we want to show the Red Wall what we’re capable of."

Gareth Bale and Aaron Ramsey came in for a lot of criticism after Wales' 2-0 defeat by Iran on Friday.

Would manager Rob Page dare drop either to face England?

“It’s a big ask for anyone to go again four days later," he says.

“You’re going to have to wait to find out. If they don’t start, can they come on and make an impact?

“They are talented footballers. We’re getting criticism and rightly so. We’re big enough to take it. We’ll put our big boy pants on and get on with it.”

Wales manager Rob Page has been asked about the need to end their group stage on a high, and to give their fans something to be proud of having been absent from World Cups for 64 years.

“Absolutely. We’ve worked so hard to get in this position," says Page.

"My frustration is we’ve shown nowhere near the level of performance that’s got us to the World Cup, which has been really disappointing.

“Irrespective of whether we get through or not, we have to give a performance our fans can be proud of. We want to react in a positive manner.”

  17. Which footballer has played the most minutes in 2022?published at 14:32 Greenwich Mean Time 28 November 2022

Now, a bit of trivia for you this afternoon. Which footballer currently at the World Cup has played the most minutes in the 2022 calendar year?

Unsurprisingly it is a goalkeeper - Canada and Red Star Belgrade's stopper Milan Borjan is the player with the most official minutes (5,430), according to CIES Football Observatory.

Liverpool and Dutch centre back Virgil van Dijk has the highest value for an outfield player with 5,160 minutes played in the last 11 months.

Harry Kane is the most used English player for club and country, while Portugal has the highest average amount of minutes out of all nations at this year's World Cup.

The media are gathering in one of the lecture theatres inside the Qatari National Convention Centre for what could (or probably will) be Wales' final pre-match news conference of the World Cup.

They're not officially out of the tournament yet but, after two poor performances, they now need to beat England tomorrow to have any chance of reaching the knockout stages.

The equation is reasonably straightfoward: win and hope the USA and Iran draw or, if that latter result does not materialise, Wales must beat England by four goals. Tall order.

  19. Queiroz: Iran will not 'self destruct' despite off-field pressurepublished at 14:24 Greenwich Mean Time 28 November 2022

Iran v United States (Tuesday, 19.00 GMT)

Iran coach Carlos Queiroz is attempting to keep his mind on the football and not let his team "self destruct" before they take on United States.

The Iranian Football Federation has complained to FIFA about the USA removing the Islamic Republic symbol from the nation's flag in some social media posts in the build-up to Tuesday night's match at the Al Thumama Stadium.

Queiroz himself also become embroiled in a war of words with former USA manager Jurgen Klinsmann after the former Germany striker claimed Iran "worked the referee" during their win over Wales.

The squad has also played against a background of widespread anti-government protests in Iran, with the team refusing to sing the national anthem before their first World Cup game, against England.

In spite of all this, Queiroz told his pre-match press conference today: "I need to be with my mind preparing them to play the best football on the day.

"Because if my mind falls in the trap to pay attention and destruct with all those things, I am lying to football. I will not do that to my father and I will not do that to the game.

"If after 42 years in this game as coach, I still believe that I could win games with those mental games, I think I did not learn anything about the game and this is not the case.

"Those collective set of events which are surrounding this World Cup, I hope it will be a good lesson for all of us in the future and that in the next event, we will learn that our mission here is to create entertainment and at least during 90 minutes, make the people happy."

Iran will reach the knock-out stages for the first time in World Cup history should they beat USA tomorrow.

  20. Netherlands deserve respect - van Gaalpublished at 14:13 Greenwich Mean Time 28 November 2022

Qatar v Netherlands (Tuesday, 15.00 GMT)

Netherlands can win the World Cup and "deserve some respect", says manager Louis van Gaal.

The Dutch are unbeaten in 17 matches and have four points from two games in Group A, after beating Senegal and drawing with Ecuador.

Ahead of facing hosts Qatar in their final group game on Tuesday, van Gaal told his press conference: "I hope this (saying the target is to win the competition) is no pressure at all.

"Because I think you always have to identify the goal, the purpose for which you are here, and then you can work your way towards that purpose. If you don't identify that purpose and say 'the last 16 or the quarter-finals is enough', that isn't the right way to do things.

"I never said we're going to become world champion, I said we can become it, that we have a chance, and the players have also become convinced of that.

"I try to make sure every player reaches his full potential, and I'm quite successful. We are unbeaten for 17 matches and if you look at the goal difference, I think that we deserve some respect."
