It is fair to say momentum is building with the African nations and tomorrow all eyes will be on Senegal as they look to seal their path out of the group stage.

Standing in their way is an undefeated Ecuador side, in the last hour or so at his pre-match press conference coach Aliou Cisse has urged his players "not to overthink" the showdown.

"We understand that winning will allow us to continue the adventure and that's what we want to do," Cisse said, praising Tuesday's opponents Ecuador as "a beautiful team".

Cisse says he has no injury concerns ahead of the game and revealed star forward Sadio Mane - ruled out of the tournament with a leg injury - has been willing his teammates on from afar.

"Sadio is still with us, even if we don't speak (daily). I know he sends messages to the boys at the end of each game -- he is with us."

  5. Qatar manager: I wouldn't change a thingpublished at 12:55 Greenwich Mean Time 28 November 2022

Qatar coach Felix Sanchez insists he would not change a thing if he were to go back in time to before the start of the World Cup.

The hosts were the first team to be eliminated from the finals after losing to Ecuador and Senegal, and are bottom of Group A with no points.

They face being the first hosts to lose all their games when they face Netherlands tomorrow, however Sanchez told his press conference: "If I go back in time? It's easy to talk about things after it's over.

"I think we have prepared in the best possible way, but everything has to be considered in perspective, we have been working with this group for a long time. Sometimes things don't go the way you want them to."

We haven't seen any of Kalvin Phillips so far at this World Cup, after the Manchester City midfielder managed to prove his fitness in time to make the plane to Qatar.

Phillips is a favourite of Southgate and was key for England in their run to the Euro 2020 final - will he get his chance against Wales?

  7. Will Kane be fit?published at 12:41 Greenwich Mean Time 28 November 2022

There have been some doubts about the fitness of England captain Harry Kane, who is yet to score at this World Cup.

Kane suffered an ankle knock in the opening game against Iran, and there has been some talk he could be rested against Wales.

However, the Tottenham striker is leading his team in training today.

  9. ‘I still don’t think that the footballing authorities are doing anywhere near enough’published at 12:31 Greenwich Mean Time 28 November 2022

Football is still not doing enough to protect players from the long term effects of head injuries, says Chris Sutton.

Professional footballers in Scotland are to be banned from heading the ball in training the day before and the day after a game, and clubs are also being told to limit exercises that involve repetitive heading to one session per week.

However Sutton, who lost his father after a 10-year battle with dementia, wants changes to be wider-ranging.

Speaking to Radio 5 Live he says the decision taken by the Scottish FA is “another positive step in the right direction but I still don’t feel we are doing enough.

“There’s been a lot of incidents in the World Cup so far including the Iranian goal keeper and that whole sham and eventually him coming off the pitch.

“I’ve been pushing for a long time about the need for temporary concussion substitutions and eventually they will come in but it’s how long, why haven’t we got them in right now; the sooner they come in the better but I still don’t think that the footballing authorities are doing anywhere near enough.

“Simply managers don’t want to risk taking their best players off because of the pressure that is on them to win games.

“What’s going to happen if we don’t change things quickly enough is this current generation of players, in 15-20 years their families will be saying ‘why didn’t we do something about this, why didn’t we implement change quicker’ because people die for neurodegenerative disease.”

  10. White sits out training through illnesspublished at 12:26 Greenwich Mean Time 28 November 2022

A bit of news from the England camp as Ben White missed training through illness on the eve of the World Cup clash with Wales.

Gareth Southgate's side will progress to the knockout phase if they avoid a four-goal defeat against their neighbours in the Group B finale.

White has yet to play a minute in Qatar and looks set to miss the Wales game having sat out training on Monday at the Al Wakrah Sports Complex.

The remaining 25 members of the squad trained in 30-degree heat, including James Maddison.

Later we will hear from England manager Southgate at the preview press conference. He will be joined by vice-captain Jordan Henderson.

  12. 'Everything that we've done in the past will be useless tomorrow'published at 12:19 Greenwich Mean Time 28 November 2022

Ecuador coach Gustavo Alfaro has warned his team not to rest on their laurels ahead of their decisive World Cup Group A match against Senegal.

The South Americans need only a draw to progress to the round of 16 for the second time in their history and the first time since 2006.

However Alfaro said: "Everything that we've done in the past will be useless tomorrow, it's a totally different game. We just want to win in order to qualify.

"I'm convinced we've done everything we can, we've done our homework, hopefully tomorrow we will be strong and fortunate enough against Senegal, who are a great team, and hopefully we will go through, because we deserve it."

Ecuador could still go through if they lose, but that would require a win by Qatar over the Netherlands, which looks improbable based on the hosts' form.

  13. Valencia gives Ecuador fitness boostpublished at 12:16 Greenwich Mean Time 28 November 2022

Enner Valencia is the World Cup's joint top scorer with three goals in his first two games - however there were some fears the former Everton and West Ham striker would miss their crucial Group A clash with Senegal due to a knee injury.

However Valencia, who has scored all of Ecuador's goals in Qatar so far, says he will be ok for tomorrow.

"My knee's ok. I hope to make it ok to keep helping the team," the Ecuador captain told reporters at the team press conference this morning.

Ecuador, ranked 44th in the world and bottom seeds in Group A, beat World Cup hosts Qatar 2-0 before outplaying the Netherlands in a 1-1 draw to go joint top before Tuesday's final games of the round.

Should they avoid defeat, they will match their all-time best World Cup showing when they reached the last 16 in 2006.

Both could get a Premier League glamour tie again this season after knocking out league sides - Boreham Wood won at League One Bristol Rovers, while Chesterfield eliminated League Two AFC Wimbledon at Plough Lane.

A six-goal thriller sees Cameroon and Serbia each pick up a point which, in reality, benefits neither.
