There's a line in the match report from the last time England played France at a men's major tournament at Euro 2012. It says 'Hodgson made the bold choice of Arsenal teenager Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain ahead of Stewart Downing'. Today we're feeling the disappointment of outplaying the World Champions in a World Cup quarter final, having kept the best player in the world quiet for 90 minutes. Southgate has taken England on leaps and bounds.

It is only two years ago that Frank Lampard was struggling to fit Olivier Giroud into his Chelsea plans as he was spoilt for choice.

Since leaving the Blues Giroud has gone on to become France's all-time leading scorer.

And his winner against England has put his country two wins away from retaining the World Cup.

The French press is understandably jubilant about France's performance last night, with Liberation, external saying "France beats England and gets itself a very Morocco'n roll semi-final".

For northern daily La Voix du Nord, external, it's "Bye-bye England, hello Morocco".

While for Le Figaro, external, it's "King Giroud delivers Blues to go to the semi-finals"; the paper notes French President Emmanuel Macron will now travel to Doha to attend the match against Morocco on Wednesday.

And for sports daily L'Equipe, the match was "crunchissimo":

Alf Wilson: Call me old fashioned but 'tournament animals' win tournaments. Like France. The fact that England are 'giving everything', 'playing the champions off the park', 'favourites' and still coming home empty handed every couple of years tells you all you need to know.

You need to learn how to win these crunch games. You don't just rock up against a big nation and then go and win if you're not 100% perfect in every sense.

I don't understand why Bukayo Saka came off for Raheem Sterling who's been away. You took him off for someone who's been in London for five days.

To win games like this you have to have things almost perfect.

Trevor Priestman: In tournaments gone by, what ifs were simply to mask poor England squads. Not this time. Southgate has built something special, he MUST stay. This England team is better than any in my lifetime. Eighteen months to regroup and they can win the Euros. So proud of them all.

Olli: Quite funny that England fans complain that better team lost yesterday. In fact the team who win is the better team and in this case France. Although they did not need to be at their best. And I guess both sides have reasons to complain referees.

It will be a very similar team for the Euro 2024. I saw some stats of the average age of the players and all of them will be in their prime. There shouldn't be a knee-jerk reaction; Gareth Southgate has done brilliantly.

We are lucky to have him. I know people will be divided; we've got that belief back and we will be fighting at the sharp end. There aren't many who might not be there, maybe Jordan Henderson or Kyle Walker.

Marc: Gareth Southgate has created a great culture & togetherness but we are still missing that bit extra on the pitch. James Maddison didn't feature at all & I can't remember many chances created vs France aside from set-pieces. FA must do whatever it takes to get Eddie Howe after the Euros.

I'm deflated. We played really well but we allowed ourselves to be beaten. I'm not angry, just disappointed. I'm gutted for Harry Kane, missing that penalty. He'll know how to deal with this.

In that instance [of Kane's second penalty miss], it was unusual where Hugo Lloris had more of an advantage stepping up to face that penalty. It is a mental thing; it will have got into Harry's head. It was a difficult position to be in.

No matter what position you are on the pitch, you need to look at the opposition and build up a picture before the game. It is no different for goalkeepers and penalty takers. Kane hits it hard, he saw Lloris go early and it hasn't worked out.
