That was one of the best performances I’ve seen from an England side. Outplayed World Champions and negated the world’s best player. We were a class act. And so is Southgate. He’s learning all the time and got all the key decisions right. He’s earned another chance.

Behind me we have seen lorries coming to collect equipment ahead of the England team leaving. It's a quick turnaround for these Premier League players. They will be back involved in the festive fixtures in just over two weeks.

The European Championship in Germany in 2024 is just 18 months away. Manager Gareth Southgate has said he needs time to reflect because these tournaments are so draining for players and management, and he did not want to make an emotional decision.

  8. 'Hearts and guts' of French team - Deschampspublished at 09:26 Greenwich Mean Time 11 December 2022

France coach Didier Deschamps said his side showed "hearts and guts" in the match against England.

    Quote Message

It's fabulous because it was a big match against a very good English team.

    Didier Deschamps, France coach

"We responded once again, it's wonderful to reach the last four again, you have to savour it, a World Cup semi-final is quite something.

"There is quality in this team, but there is also a good mentality and a state of mind. We gave them a little ammunition with two penalties, but it is with hearts and guts that we held on to this result."

Deschamps also said France's semi-final opponents Morocco "deserve all our respect and recognition".

"They weren't among the teams we were expecting there, but it's anything but a surprise."

I appear to be in the minority but struggle to see why Southgate deserves to stay. He’s been gifted the most talented squad in generations and he has failed when it really matters in three consecutive tournaments. Quarter finals is an abject failure for what many around the world regard as the best team in the tournament.

    England 1-2 France

    Rob Green
Former England goalkeeper on BBC Radio 5 Live

There are ways to lose and we lost in a way you can take. They put in a good performance against a good side; I don't think France are unbeatable, they weren't favourites for the competition.

    It is a bearable defeat.

I am outside the England team hotel and the feeling is very raw following the defeat to France. After the match I spoke to Declan Rice and he told us how the players feel the better team lost that makes the result even more difficult for England to accept.

Can see both sides of the Southgate debate - he's brought more success than any manager in almost 60 years. Turned us into a real tournament animal and I don't see an unlucky loss to what will be a double world cup winning side as changing that. Wary of going back to how things were. He is too reactive though and slow to react. Real question is who would you have instead? Howe/Potter the future, but too early for them now. He stays for this reason.

Southgate did an excellent job in this tournament, I really hope he stays. We took the game to an elite team and outplayed them for long periods. Unfortunately Harry missed - under unbelievable pressure - and that’s why we’re going home. Simple as that. But absolutely no one should be feel bad about our performance, they did our country proud.

BBC Radio 5 Live's 606 presenter Chris Sutton gave his thoughts after England's defeat to France.

"I thought England played well. I think they were unlucky," said the former Premier League winner.

"I really felt for England, that was a really sore one."

On Harry Kane's penalty miss: "I really feel for Harry Kane. He’s a brilliant goalscorer.

"I think there are people out there who think he shouldn’t have taken the second penalty. I think he should have.

"That will live with him forever."

  20. Miss 'something I will have to live with' - Kanepublished at 08:51 Greenwich Mean Time 11 December 2022

Harry Kane admitted his penalty miss is "something he will have to live with".

"It's tough to take for me personally and the team," Kane told BBC Sport.

"It will be something I have to live with and take on the chin."

"I couldn't be prouder of the boys. We had better spells, better chances but football comes down to small details - as the captain and the one who missed the penalty, I take responsibility for that.

"I can't fault my preparation or the details before the game. I felt confident taking it, just didn't execute it the way I wanted to."
