Andy Marshall: England can be proud of their effort, behaviour and have the ability to win it. But a sobering thought is that at World Cups, Morocco have beaten as many of the so called ‘elite’ teams in the last three weeks as England have in last 40 years, so a change is required.

Jude Bellingham takes time to have a photograph with fans outside the England team hotel before departing for the airport.

Not only is the 19-year-old a super talent on the pitch, Bellingham has shown his class off it as well during this tournament.

Did anyone else notice he was the first to race to Harry Kane and put an arm around him after the penalty miss?

    A future England captain?

    History makers.

Three previous African sides had reached the quarter-finals of the competition - but could not take that step further.

    This time, it was different.

Marvellous Morocco have lit up this World Cup - and their fans got their reward by witnessing their side becoming the first from their continent to reach the semi-finals by beating Portugal.

Morocco will now face France on Wednesday (19:00 GMT) for a place in the final.

Is Gareth Southgate the right man to lead England?

100%. Southgate believes in this group.

We are only 18 months way from the next tournament. I don't see anyone over the hill. This group will stay together and build.

    John Murray
Commentator on BBC Radio 5 Live

Gareth Southgate was talking about the energy that he takes, and he said he wants to take the right decision for the team, himself and the Football Association. He knows how his feelings have fluctuated in the aftermath of tournaments in the past.

To go again takes a lot of energy. The next Euro qualifiers are in March.. France was his 81st match and, as an observer, I think that was the best we've seen from England at a tournament, even though the previous ones were semi-final and final and this was 'only' a quarter-final. We've seen the kind of football his critics said England wouldn't produce at a tournament. They went toe to toe with France last night.

These have been the best of times that England fans have seen in living memory. French colleagues were saying it will come for England. Southgate suits the job in almost every aspect. He's shown it is not the impossible job.

    What now for Gareth Southgate?

In November 2021, the England boss signed a new contract to keep him in the role until December 2024.

Since taking over the national side in 2016, Southgate has steered England to World Cup semi-finals and quarter-finals, plus the final of European Championship.

As a Scot I'd like to congratulate England on their performances in the WC. The team and manager represented their country with pride and dignity and there should be a lot of hope for the future with the squad age. The better team didn't win last night. It just came down to individual moments and some poor refereeing decisions. Football in a nutshell really.

Moroccan fans had dreamt of this moment, but not many expected that it would actually happen.

Their team has made history, becoming the first Arab and African side to make it to the World Cup semi-finals.They beat yet another favourite, Portugal.

A huge moment for the continent and the region.

The tension was palpable on the pitch and in the stands. Morocco's fans chanted seer or "go ahead" in Arabic, and let out a massive cheer as their team scored.

"This is a night that I'm going to tell my children and grandchildren about," Soufiane Megrini told me.

"Morocco made us proud. We're proud of our team and our coach."

    I think Southgate should stay.

The whole environment at England is right. He is the best man for that; the way he handles himself is fantastic, so dependable.

He will need to think about it, because if he thinks he can't give that again for 18 months, it will be detrimental to the opportunities England have got. We've got great young players. Is it a bit early to start saying England are going to win the Euros?

My patience wears a bit thin saying we have a good squad, our time will come. We have been saying the same old thing for decades. Fact is we have failed. We have played some nice football but against a top nation we have been beaten at the first hurdle again. To have been beaten so many times suggests this is not a random occurrence. Either we are not as good as we say we are or the pressure affects us more than the opposition.
