Kane won't sleep well for a long time. I know how much it means to him. He will feel like he has cost England.

We will look at it a different way. He has saved us on many occasions.

On this one it is one of those things. The biggest one I missed was one against Sunderland and it still haunts me.

So success these days is not winning anything? I think people are missing the glaringly obvious that he isn't a great tactician. He never utilises the squad yet we're supposed to have a strong squad. Missed chance not beating the USA and should have brought subs on at 65 to 70 minutes last night. Saka started to gain advantage over left back and Foden given a free range.

We played well. We just didn't get the luck and missed a penalty. That is the life of a centre forward.

It will haunt Harry for the rest of his life, I'm afraid. That is what we have to put up with as forward.

You don't score every chance you have. It will hurt like hell.

Gareth is absolutely the man to take this England team forward. Let's not get into rash managerial changes that we see in the premier league season after season. This England team is building something. The Germans stuck with Low until he delivered the World Cup in 2014. It took 8 years. Stick with Gareth and we will win before too long.

Joy came quickly in Paris last night - France’s stunning first half goal greeted with euphoria by the crowds packed on the terrace of Le Galant bar.

It didn’t last long into the second half. Harry Kane’s penalty equaliser was greeted here with grim silence.

But another French goal sparked dancing, and a spontaneous rendition of the French national anthem. It was, in the end, France’s night.

This match was framed by both sides as a tough fight - a historic battle against a respected rival.

Even President Emmanuel Macron and Prime Minister Rishi Sunak joined in, teasing each other on social media before the game began.

Now England is out, and France is edging closer to the final. Its dream of retaining the World Cup trophy is within sight.

Still gutted that England lost, and as much as I like Gareth I can't help think that with a more tactically adept manager we'd have gone through. But who is there in that category that would replace him? I think the FA need to find the next best up and coming coach to work with Southgate and have decisions on selection. It's inexcusable that with 10 minutes to go and you need an equaliser, you bring Sterling on and not Maddison.

  11. I'd love Southgate to say as manager - Nevillepublished at 08:20 Greenwich Mean Time 11 December 2022

    England 1-2 France

Former England full-back Gary Neville said he would "love" Gareth Southgate to remain as manager.

"I would love Gareth to stay on for another two years and beyond that, whether as the coach or in a role in the FA designing the future," Neville told ITV.

"England, in the last 10 years, have won youth tournaments, won the women's Euros last summer and reached the men's Euros final. We're playing well and have good technical players.

"England are in a pretty good place, let's be clear about that. We've gone out of tournaments in disgrace and wondered what the hell the future is.

"We have a great future and he is a big part of that."

The squad has done us proud this tournament. The quarter final defeat is hard but mainly due to shambolic refereeing. Harry can hold his head up even if he overthought the penalty. Keep going Gareth.

  13. 'No doubts' Southgate should stay - Shearerpublished at 08:15 Greenwich Mean Time 11 December 2022

    England 1-2 France

    Alan Shearer
Former England striker on BBC Radio 5 Live

Should Southgate stay on as England manager?

Yes. Southgate should. I don't have any doubts about that.

He has had success in a way. I know we haven't won a trophy but you have to look at the bigger picture.

We have missed a great opportunity but that is through no fault of anyone's. The decision Gareth made were very good.

  14. Southgate wants time to decide futurepublished at 08:12 Greenwich Mean Time 11 December 2022

    England 1-2 France

Gareth Southgate said after the defeat he needs time to decide whether he will remain as England manager.

He has a contract that runs until after Euro 2024.

"These tournaments take a lot out of you and I need time to reflect," he said.

"We've done that after every tournament and that's the right thing to do."

  16. Highlights: Kane misses penalty as England knocked outpublished at 08:06 Greenwich Mean Time 11 December 2022

    England 1-2 France

Was it different this time? England are out of the World Cup but most would agree they played well.

Aurelien Tchouameni put France ahead early in the first half.

But Gareth Southgate's side responded well in the second.

They were the better team and were good for their equaliser when Harry Kane converted from the penalty spot to equal Wayne Rooney's England goal scoring record.

France, though, are world champions for a reason.

They found a way to get back in front as Olivier Giroud headed in in the 78th minute.

Then came the cruel twist from England's perspective.

They were awarded another penalty after a foul on Mason Mount but, after stepping up for a second time, Kane fired his penalty over.

England's exit was confirmed soon after.
