  2. Cardiff are not taking this seriously'published at 13:57 Greenwich Mean Time 8 January 2023

    Cardiff v Leeds (14:00 GMT)

    Danny Gabbidon
Former Wales defender on BBC Radio 5 Live

I'm surprised with the line-up. I have heard that there is a sickness in the camp and there were one or two players struggling to win the game but he needs a win.

He needs a result, he needs a positive performance, he needs the fans to start believing in him and the team.

I'm looking at the starting 11 and I'm not sure he is taking this seriously. If you look at Cardiff generally under previous managers as well in cup competitions, there has been a similar trend.

They've not really been interested in doing well in cup competitions and it looks like a similar thing again this afternoon.

  3. Hatters and Saddlers eye unfamiliar territorypublished at 13:55 Greenwich Mean Time 8 January 2023

    Stockport v Walsall (14:00 GMT)

Grimsby's win over Burton on Saturday means there are guaranteed to be at least two League Two sides in the fourth round - they will be joined by either Stockport or Walsall, who meet in an all-fourth tier tie this afternoon.

That would be unfamiliar territory for the Saddlers, with cup cheer in very short supply in recent years, having reached round four just once in their past 16 seasons, in 2015-16.

Stockport, promoted back to the Football League last year after a decade in non-league, have had an even leaner time of it, last reaching round four in 2001.

Walsall have won both previous FA Cup meetings between the sides but County ran out 2-0 winners at the Poundland Bescot Stadium when the teams met in the league only 10 days ago.

  4. Sutton's predictionpublished at 13:54 Greenwich Mean Time 8 January 2023

    Cardiff v Leeds (14:00 GMT)

    Chris SuttonImage source, BBC Sport

    Sutton's prediction: 0-3

It is 21 years since Cardiff shocked Leeds with a famous FA Cup third-round win but I don't see the Welsh side causing them any problems whatsoever this time.

Part of the reason for that is that Cardiff are playing so poorly at the moment, but I also think Jesse Marsch will pick a strong side and that Leeds will play with their usual intensity.

    Nathan's prediction:0-3

I don't want Leeds to suffer an upset. I'm based in Manchester now, but I like watching them.

    Bristol City 0-1 Swansea

Bristol City are not going to get a penalty no matter what happens this afternoon, are they?!

Nathan Wood is booked for shoving over Alex Scott in the box but his infringement looks to have come after an initial one by a Bristol City player, so we restart with a Swansea free-kick.

I'll be honest, I'm not sure there was much in the first foul.

  8. 'Hudson can turn things around'published at 13:48 Greenwich Mean Time 8 January 2023

    Cardiff v Leeds (14:00 GMT)

Cardiff are languishing somewhat this season, one place and one point above the relegation zone in the Championship and without a win in their last seven games.

Rob Earnshaw feels today's game with Leeds is exactly the tonic his former side need.

"It's going to be a break from the league for Cardiff and this is just the sort of high-profile game that could really kick-start their season.

"I played with [manager] Mark Hudson and have done some of my coaches badges with him and I believe he can turn things around.

"This is not where he would want to be but he will be planning exactly what needs to be done. He's capable and so is the team of doing more."

This has the feel of a third-round FA Cup tie now.

Back in 2002, Leeds, who had reached the semi-finals of the Champions League the previous season, were flying high at the top of the - then called - FA Barclaycard Premiership and had just signed striker Robbie Fowler for £11m. Cardiff, in contrast, were mid-table in the third tier.

Little wonder then that Leeds manager David O'Leary predicted his side would "begin and end" their FA Cup campaign in the Welsh capital - which was also hosting the final at the Millennium Stadium.

However the young Bluebirds had different ideas.

"We were in the second division back then but we were flying, getting promoted through the leagues and building," re-called Earnshaw on Radio Wales Breakfast.

"We were a young team and we believed we had nothing to lose, so we just went out there and went for it.

"It was the Premier League leaders, who were full of superstars at the time. I remember Rio Ferdinand played as well as Robbie Fowler, Mark Viduka, so many top players. We just thought, this is our chance to go up against some of the very best and possibly beat them.

"It was one of the biggest shocks in the history of the FA Cup and I was lucky enough to be a part of it on the pitch.

"It could definitely happen again [this weekend] though it is different now.

"We were relatively smaller in stature than now as Cardiff have been in the Premier League a couple of times since then, and Leeds at the time were top of the Premier League, like Arsenal today."

Aston Villa v Stevenage (16:30 GMT)

Aston Villa are preparing for Sunday's third-round tie against Stevenage with the objective of "winning the FA Cup", says manager Unai Emery.

The Spaniard has a rich history in cup competitions, winning the Europa League three times with Sevilla and being runners-up with Arsenal in 2019.

Emery also claimed four domestic cups in France with Paris St-Germain.

"I like the cup competitions in Spain, in France and here in England," said Emery, who was appointed in November.

"The FA Cup is a very good opportunity to try and do something in this way.

"We are going to prepare for the match thinking the objective is to win the FA Cup, not now [on Sunday], but if we can progress then maybe."

Villa last won the competition in 1957 and their most recent appearance in the final came in 2015, when they were thrashed 4-0 by Arsenal.

Bristol City prompt the first real roar from the home fans as they come forward down the left. The cross is aimed for Antoine Semenyo but cut out for a corner.

The delivery is headed down to the edge of the box where Andreas Weimann is waiting to fire a shot way over the bar.

Much better from the home team.

Robert Earnshaw believes Cardiff City can salvage their season with a repeat of their FA Cup giant-killing 21 years ago.

The former Wales striker was part of the Bluebirds side that beat Leeds United on 6 January 2002.

Scott Young's late winner saw second division Cardiff beat the Premier League leaders at raucous Ninian Park.

The gap may not be as large for this Sunday's third-round tie but Earnshaw admits a home win could be as telling.

"The team is capable of much more. Hopefully this is just the sort of game to turn the season around," he said.

Sunday's tie will be almost exactly 21 years to the day when the clubs famously met in the FA Cup third round in 2002.

A reminder that the draw for the fourth round takes place at approximately 16:05 before the tie between Manchester City and Chelsea.

Wrexham, second in the National League, are the lowest ranked club definitely through although fellow non-league clubs Boreham Wood and Chesterfield will also be part of the draw after forcing replays.

Grimsby Town, 16th in League Two, will be hoping to land a home tie against Premier League opposition as will the three League One clubs definitely through - Fleetwood, Ipswich and Sheffield Wednesday.

Talking of Fleetwood, they have never played in the fourth round before. That is all about to change for the Lancashire club managed by Celtic legend Scott Brown.

Mark Chapman will host the draw, which is live on BBC One, with Emile Heskey and Karen Bardsley picking out the balls. The fourth round will be played between 27-30 January.

This game is unlikely to generate the hostile atmosphere that the old Ninian Park created to inspire then third-tier Cardiff's famous 2002 FA Cup win over Leeds, who topped what was the Premiership at the time.

But Leeds' fans will be doing their bit to get the juices flowing - they've sold out their allocation of 6,000 and will likely bring the noise more than their hosts today, who are only expected to attract around 12,000 supporters this afternoon.

That said, there is a larger police presence than usual at Cardiff City Stadium. It has the feeling of a big game.

Stockport County have made three changes for their all-League Two tie with Walsall. Top scorer Paddy Madden makes way as new signing Isaac Oloafe, a recent arrival from Millwall, is handed his debut.

Visitors Walsall also make three changes as their leading marksman Danny Johnson returns, having been ineligible to face his parent club Mansfield in the Saddlers' previous game.

  19. Cardiff eye another big winpublished at 13:25 Greenwich Mean Time 8 January 2023

    Cardiff v Leeds (14:00 GMT)

Since the shock result 21 years ago, Cardiff have become a bogey side for Leeds, winning 14 of the 22 subsequent meetings, and Bluebirds boss Mark Hudson hopes his team, a lowly 20th in the Championship, can take inspiration from their success.

"I've been reminded of it this week - it's a team that we've done well against historically and we look forward to it," Hudson added.

"When you play a Premier League team you're going to be deemed as an underdog, but we've got to focus on what we can do."

No surprise that League Two side Hartlepool are going full strength in a bid to reach the fourth round in what has been a fairly miserable season for them - defender Euan Murray returning is their solitary change.

Championship visitors Stoke, however, make five changes with veteran defender Phil Jagielka and on-loan Manchester City forward Liam Delap among those brought in by Potters boss Alex Neil.
