  1. 'We were ruthless'published at 16:17 Greenwich Mean Time 1 January 2023

    FT: Tottenham 0-2 Aston Villa

    Aston Villa

Aston Villa winger Emi Buendia to BBC Match of the Day: "It's an amazing win away. We needed to show everyone that we were capable of winning away, especially against a top team so we take the three points.

"We knew before the game that we had to suffer, be compact so everyone showed that character. We were ruthless in front of goal."

On working under Unai Emery: "As soon as they came here, they told us we needed to win more points away from home and playing a top side like Tottenham team away and winning, we are very happy."

On Argentina winning the World Cup: "I enjoyed every game, supporting my country, really proud of all the players. We needed Lionel Messi and I'm happy for him and obviously really proud of my team-mate Emi Martinez."

  2. 'Teams suffer at Forest'published at 16:15 Greenwich Mean Time 1 January 2023

Nottingham Forest v Chelsea (16:30 GMT)

    Chelsea

Chelsea boss Graham Potter, speaking to Sky Sports: "I wanted to keep a winning team, it was a good performance against Bournemouth. I felt that was the right way to go. We'll miss Reece James, but [Cesar] Azpilicueta is an experienced player and he'll do a job for us there.

"Denis Zakaria worked well with Jorginho. It is a different game today, but I thought he earned the right to play today. He did well in the break in a behind closed doors game against Brentford too. He gives us physicality in midfield too, which I think will be important.

"We're here to try and build momentum. It is important and we want to do it, but we're playing against a team fighting for points and team suffer here. We know the challenge ahead but it would be great to build on the three points from earlier in the week."

  3. Can Chelsea start 2023 well?published at 16:13 Greenwich Mean Time 1 January 2023

Chelsea have not been in great form at the end of the year having lost three matches in a row before beating Bournemouth on Tuesday.

It means they sit in ninth place in the table to kickstart 2023 and are hoping to avoid four successive away defeats in all competitions.

They have lost five away games already in the league this season - a sixth defeat would equal their final total of the 2021-22 campaign.

But they will be hopeful of picking up points against a struggling Nottingham Forest side, who sit second bottom in the table.

Former Middlesbrough & Fulham keeper on BBC Radio 5 Live

Conte is full of energy and like to march up and down the touchline. He kicks every ball. It was a long way away from that.

If you look at the quality of this Spurs side, they should be doing a lot better. Players have to take a huge responsibility but also the manager does.

Nottingham Forest are second bottom and in relegation danger having won just three games all season.

They need points but their home form is encouraging and that means Chelsea need to be wary.

Of the 11 league goals Forest have scored in the current campaign, 10 were netted at the City Ground.

Steve Cooper's side are also unbeaten in their last five home matches in all competitions and they have lost only one of their last 14 matches played on New Year's Day at home in the league.

    Thanks Jess, enjoy the cheese!

A good win for Villa to start the new year then. More reaction to come from London.

We have another Premier League game to go now though as Nottingham Forest are hoping to move out of the relegation zone.

They host Chelsea at 16:30 GMT so I'll start building up to that.

    Well, that's my stint done.

I shall now handover to Emma Sanders to take you through the rest of the afternoon's action.

I'm off to eat yet another plate of cheese.

  8. 'Flat from Spurs'published at 16:03 Greenwich Mean Time 1 January 2023

Conte will obviously not be a happy man. Losing 2-0, losing at home. Really poor from Tottenham, they really struggled. The hammer blow comes with the mistake from Lloris. But it was all about the reaction. The reaction was almost non-existent.

Spurs look very very flat and a long way off playing any decent sort of football.

  9. Lloris past his best?published at 16:00 Greenwich Mean Time 1 January 2023

    FT: Tottenham 0-2 Aston Villa

Former Liverpool and Newcastle boss Graeme Souness on Sky Sports: "I am not a big fan of Hugo Lloris, I've said it for a long time. He's made four errors leading to goals since the start of last season, the most of any keeper in the league. For me, he is past his sell-by date."

  10. Emery loves to play Spurspublished at 15:59 Greenwich Mean Time 1 January 2023

    FT: Tottenham 0-2 Aston Villa

Aston Villa manager Unai Emery is unbeaten in all four of his Premier League meetings with Tottenham.

Three of those victories came during his time at Arsenal.

Spurs have conceded at least twice in seven consecutive league matches for the first time since November 1988.

A disappointing afternoon for the London side but what a result for Unai Emery's Villa.

  12. 'Villa deserve the victory'published at 15:57 Greenwich Mean Time 1 January 2023

    FT: Tottenham 0-2 Aston Villa

    Mark Schwarzer

Villa have played the game very very well. They took the lead, it came from nothing but then from that moment onwards they have really controlled the game. They deserve to be 2-0 up and coming away with three points.

Just one minute of added time to go and Spurs look pretty defeated.

Villa have a free-kick on the half-way line and they just look to keep the ball.

I don't think I have ever seen Conte so inactive in his technical area ever. he has been very very quiet, he is just standing there with his arms folded, his hand on his chin.

Is it the calm before the storm? Is it something we will hear about in post-match, his frustration about the performances of his players?

  16. Postpublished at 90+4mins

    Tottenham 0-2 Aston Villa

Aston Villa look to spring another attack as Philippe Coutinho works well down the right-hand side but it's cleared by Spurs.

Villa have a corner, swung in by Lucas Digne but Ollie Watkins was unable to get a meaningful touch on it.

  17. Postpublished at 90+2mins

    Tottenham 0-2 Aston Villa

Sloppy again from Spurs as Boubacar Kamara wins the ball back in midfield.

He finds Ollie Watkins but there's more white shirts in the box and Pape Sarr eventually clears.

Calum Chambers is in the book for delaying on the free-kick.

    Tottenham 0-2 Aston Villa

Spurs boss Antonio Conte looks a very frustrated figure on the touchline.

His side haven't had a single shot on target in the second half, despite having 60% possession.

In fact, their only shot on target, which is show by the green line (red is off target, with blue blocked) was that wide free-kick from Son Heung-min in the first half. Whether it was even a shot is up for debate.

For the attacking talent at their disposal they have been lacking in the forward areas today.

It really has been a poor showing from Spurs. Players have lacked intensity and they have struggled with real quality.

We've hardly seen Kane in the game. Son has had moments but nothing really came of it and Perisic has been quiet in the second half.

Conte not the problem for Spurs. Levy is. Always was. No idea about head coach appointments. Gets it right one time in four at best. Most of his choices are half baked ego trips. Conte never a good fit.

    Simon, Milton Keynes

People complaining about Conte forget Spurs were an absolute machine towards the end of last season. What’s changed? And those asking for Poch back have short memories.
