The West Ham skipper is lucky. Rodrigo didn't put any force behind his challenge and there was no intent but a few centimetres the other way and Rice could have been in trouble.

History has been made with Bhupinder Singh Gill becoming the first Sikh-Punjabi to serve as an assistant referee at a Premier League match at tonight's game at St Mary's.

The 37-year-old, who qualified as a referee at the age of 14, said earlier that he hoped to inspire the future generation.

“My dream has always been to reach the top of the game, be a role model for future officials and encourage more people from diverse backgrounds into officiating, especially from a South Asian background just like me," he said.

Saints fans clap with anticipation but Ward-Prowse sends the ball over the bar, prompting relieved cheers from the away end.

Spurs boss Antonio Conte: "Our expectation is to have a good reaction. In my opinion the performance [against Villa] was not so negative.

"Our target is to start well and to play football. Create chances, don't concede a goal. This is our idea about this game.

"We didn't have a slow start against Aston Villa. Fom the first minute we started well."

On when Dejan Kulusevski will return: "I don't know. The medical department gave the possibility to play with us. Today they said he's not available. I don't know how close he is to coming back with us."

On picking Oliver Skipp: "There were two options - Skippy and Pape Sarr, two really good prospects for the future but players we need to play now to help the team to get a good result. In this case I prefer to pick Skippy because he played many games last season with Hojbjerg. I know I can count on Sarr."

First Leeds attack yields a corner, but it could have been more.

Rodrigo is away but Nayef Aguerd is back at him quickly to slide in and put the ball behind. Rodrigo went to ground but there were only hopeful penalty shouts from the optimists in the crowd.

"We have quality, we have talent, we know how we want to play. The challenge is to be consistent.

"When you're looking at Spurs' last couple of games, they conceded the first goal. Some of the games they came back. There is a character and a talent in their team. We have to be focused and play the best we can."

It's just very very strange. Listening to the situation the word I took from that is the problem is between me and the football club regarding the contact.

The players aren't performing, they aren't getting the results that we would normally expect and slightly mixed messages from the manager as well. He talks about the project he's looking to build. How can he build that if he's looking to leave at the end of the season?
