  1. 'I've been in this position twice before and we just need to get it right' - Moyespublished at 18:52 Greenwich Mean Time 4 January 2023

Leeds v West Ham (19:45 GMT)

David Moyes says he is "feeling really good" about his current position at West Ham despite the Hammers lurking just above the relegation zone having failed to win in their last five Premier League games.

"I'm feeling really good because I've had great support from David Sullivan and the board. I think West Ham supporters have been incredibly supportive," Moyes said.

"We're not at the halfway point yet, if the World Cup hadn't been on we wouldn't be at Christmas. We have to buck up, do better, play better. I've been in this position twice before and we just need to get it right."

Club captain Declan Rice has faced criticism from fans for his body language on the pitch - a concern Moyes does not share.

"Declan played fantastically well in the week. He tried to drive us on in the week. I don't see it," he added.

Rice has shared his views on the current form, telling the club's website: "It's frustrating because I know the quality we have got and I know the players we have got.

"There's no beating around the bush, we signed players in the summer and it's up to us to be out there, pushing, driving, giving everything for the badge and giving everything for the fans.

"I'm out there trying as hard to do that, trying to keep the lads going. All the lads in there are trying to keep each other going too.

"We're down there and that's the reality but we don't want to think like that because we want to have a positive mentality. We still think we can play and get a result in this league so there's not going to be any negativity from me.

"I don't like where we are, I don't like the way we've played recently - it's unlike us to lose five Premier League games but football is a learning experience and it's about how we move on."

West Ham come into tonight's game at Elland Road off the back of five straight losses, the most recent of which saw Brentford repel everything the Hammers had to throw at them and ruthlessly pick them off at the London Stadium. It is a result that cranked the pressure up on boss David Moyes, with his side having claimed 14 points from 17 games - a huge downturn on their return of recent seasons.

Leeds are not much better off than West Ham, sitting three places and two points better off in that congested bottom half of the Premier League. They claimed a hard-fought goalless draw at Newcastle last time out, but will see this as a good opportunity to start moving in the right direction.

  3. Ringing the changespublished at 18:49 Greenwich Mean Time 4 January 2023

Leeds v West Ham (19:45 GMT)

The four changes by West Ham tonight from their last Premier League match is their most from one match to another this season.

A clear sign that Moyes recognises the need for something fresh.

What do you reckon West Ham fans? You happy with that XI? Feel free to use the thumbs to say yes or no.

Leeds v West Ham (19:45 GMT)

    Leeds starting XI

Leeds make two changes from their 0-0 draw with high-flying Newcastle last time out.

Marc Roca and Crysencio Summerville come into the starting XI.

Jack Harrison drops to the bench and Adam Forshaw - who was substituted at half-time against Newcastle - is not in the squad.

New signing Max Wober can't play today although the defender could make his debut in Sunday's FA Cup round three tie at Cardiff City.

Leeds XI: Meslier (GK), Ayling, Koch, Cooper, Struijk; Roca, Adams; Aaronson, Summerville, Gnonto; Rodrigo.

Subs: Robles, Firpo, Harrison, Llorente, Gyabi, Kristensen, Gelhardt, Greenwood, Klich.

    West Ham XI

David Moyes makes four changes to the West Ham team that lost to Brentford 2-0 last time out.

In come Pablo Fornals, Thilo Kehrer, Nayef Aguerd and Tomas Soucek.

Leeds v West Ham (19:45 GMT)

Both teams will wear black armbands tonight in honour of Hammers co-chairman David Gold, who passed away today.

A bouquet of flowers has been placed on the seat that would have been his in the directors box.

  6. Will Tottenham turn up?published at 18:46 Greenwich Mean Time 4 January 2023

Crystal Palace v Tottenham (20:00 GMT)

This is a game between two teams who are both so inconsistent it is hard to know exactly what to expect.

I really don't have a clue whether Tottenham will turn up, but if they don't win then I do know that their manager Antonio Conte will have an excuse ready - it's never his fault, is it?

I don't think Spurs have been good enough all season and I can understand why their fans have been so frustrated when they have phoned up to complain on about Conte's style of football on BBC Radio 5 Live's 606.

Crystal Palace's performances have also been very up and down. Although they got a good win against Bournemouth last time out, there is no guarantee they will follow that up here and carry the same attacking threat we know they possess.

In fact, it's far more likely they will find a way of stuffing this up, regardless of how Tottenham play.

    Prediction: 1-2

Antonio Conte insists he remains "happy" at Tottenham despite a slump in results that has seen Spurs slip out of the Premier League's top four.

Conte led Tottenham to Champions League qualification after taking over midway through last season but four losses in Spurs' past seven games have threatened to undermine a decent start to the current campaign.

"I am really committed for this club, for Tottenham," Conte said. "I signed a contract with this club and I have to accept this project, to try to build with the club.

"During this process one thousand other things can happen. The club can sack the manager or there are different visions or situations.

"But I’m happy to stay here, I’m enjoying my time in Tottenham, I’m happy the way I am working. I’ve always said this. We are trying to create a base, a foundation."

  10. 'A true supporter at heart'published at 18:34 Greenwich Mean Time 4 January 2023

West Ham manager David Moyes: "I am extremely sad to hear this news.

"On behalf of all of the players and my staff at the training ground, I would like to extend our deepest sympathies to David Gold's family at this very difficult time.

"Mr Gold was a regular visitor to Rush Green and always a source of great support and encouragement to myself and the players. It was clear that he had a genuine and sincere love for the club and was a true supporter at heart.

"He took a great interest in the people working behind the scenes and was always keen to help in any way he could. He will be greatly missed."

  11. West Ham co-chairman Gold diespublished at 18:32 Greenwich Mean Time 4 January 2023

It has been a tough day for West Ham as they try to prepare for tonight's game at Leeds.

It was announced this afternoon that co-chairman David Gold had died at the age of 86 following a short illness.

A lifelong Hammers fan, the club said he passed away "peacefully" on Wednesday morning with his fiancee and daughters by his side.

Gold, previously the chairman and co-owner of Birmingham City, became joint-chairman at West Ham with David Sullivan in 2010.

Gold grew up directly opposite the Boleyn Ground - West Ham's former stadium - and played for the club's boys' and youth teams.

"Of all our joint ventures, none gave us more pride and happiness than the day we took ownership of West Ham United, our club, in January 2010," said Sullivan.

"David had a long-standing connection with the Hammers, having grown up opposite the Boleyn Ground in Green Street, and represented the club at junior level.

"He always wanted what was best for West Ham United, and his passing is a great loss for all of us."

Gold was at Birmingham City for 16 years, selling his shares in 2009 before he and Sullivan took over at West Ham in January 2010.

West Ham said their takeover "helped to steady the ship and protect the club's future during a period of great financial uncertainty".

His tenure at the club oversaw its move to the London Stadium, as well as relegation and subsequent promotion back to the Premier League and playing in the Europa League.

Outside of football, Gold was also the chairman of retail chain Ann Summers and previously co-owned an adult magazine company and corporate air service.

Southampton v Nottingham Forest (19:30 GMT)

    SouthamptonImage source, .

Southampton make three changes from the 11 that began the 2-1 loss to Fulham on New Year's Eve as Romain Perraud, Romeo Lavia and Sekou Mara come in for benched trio Ainsley Maitland-Niles, Samuel Edozie and Joe Aribo.

Southampton XI: Bazunu, Perraud, Salisu, Lyanco, Bella-Kotchap, Walker-Peters, Lavia, Ward-Prowse, Elyounoussi, Mara, Adams.

Subs: Caballero, Caleta-Car, Maitland-Niles, S Armstrong, Diallo, Djenepo, Edozie, A Armstrong, Aribo.

    Nottingham ForestImage source, .

Nottingham Forest drew 1-1 against Chelsea on 1 January and Steve Cooper sticks with the 11 that began that match.

On the bench is one-time Brazil international Gustavo Scarpa, the 28-year-old attacking midfielder, who joined Forest on a free transfer from Palmeiras on a free transfer last month but could not play until January.

If he gets on tonight, it will be a Forest debut for him.

Nottingham Forest XI: Henderson, Lodi, Boly, Worrall, Aurier, Mangala, Freuler, Yates, Gibbs-White, Awoniyi, Johnson.

Subs: Hennessey, Cook, Williams, Toffolo, McKenna, Colback, Scarpa, Surridge, Dennis.

Premier League bottom sixImage source, BBC Sport

Before those two games, though, we have a couple of relegation six-pointers on our hands.

At 19:30 GMT, it's 20th against 18th as Southampton host Nottingham Forest. Both sides will know that a loss tonight will leave them as most people's favourites for the drop.

Saints have marginally the greater need, seen as they are at the very bottom of the table, having lost five in a row. They're also at home and really need to give everyone a bit of a lift to show new boss Nathan Jones has what it takes to dig them out.

Forest are going through a bit of a repeat pattern of win, lose then draw at the moment. If they follow that then tonight should be a victory following the resilient point they took off Chelsea last time out.

At 19:45 GMT, West Ham, another side on a losing run of five games, travel to Leeds. The storm clouds have been gathering above Hammers boss David Moyes for a while now. He and his side did not see a relegation battle happening this season and desperately need a result to steady the ship. Leeds have just emerged from a tough run of fixtures and now have a set in front of them from which their season could be defined. Win a few and they can drag themselves away from the mess below them and look upwards. The alternative is another stressful fight.

Aston Villa v Wolves (20:00 GMT)

Julen Lopetegui and Unai EmeryImage source, Getty Images

The game at Selhurst Park is one of two games kicking off at 20:00 GMT tonight, the other being a midlands encounter between the team that won at Spurs last time out, Aston Villa, and a side in dire need of a victory to lift themselves out of the bottom three, Wolves.

The former have cause for quiet optimism right now after the upturn in performances under Unai Emery, who looks to have made Villa much harder to face than predecessor Steven Gerrard.

In the opposite dugout is another Spaniard new to the job and with a reputation for making sides into tough nuts to crack - Julen Lopetegui. He began his time at Wolves with a loss at home to Manchester United and could really do with that morale-boosting first win to come much sooner rather than later.

  16. Tottenham tanking?published at 18:18 Greenwich Mean Time 4 January 2023

Crystal Palace v Tottenham (20:00 GMT)

Premier League top sixImage source, BBC Sport

It feels a long time ago that Tottenham were dreaming of a push for the title under Antonio Conte. In pre-season, off the back of a previous campaign that had seen them take a Champions League spot ahead of north London rivals Arsenal and having added some fine-looking signings to the squad, a run at the bog prize was mooted. Nobody is suggesting it anymore. In fact, people are starting to wonder if even a top-four finish is starting to slip from their grasp.

There's no need to panic just yet, although a home loss to Aston Villa to start 2023 hardly filled Spurs folk with optimism.

A trip to Crystal Palace, who began their year with a confident return-to-form victory at Bournemouth and have some tricky, quick players who will be roared on by a noisy crowd, is probably not the trip Tottenham fans would have wished for, for such a crucial game.

  17. It's tough at the top. And the bottom. And also in the middle.published at 18:13 Greenwich Mean Time 4 January 2023

Such is the nature of the Premier League, it feels like most of the teams in the division are only ever one or two bad results away from a crisis.

Tonight, we have four fixtures, featuring eight teams who all fit this description to a greater or lesser degree.

A couple of them could probably take a loss in their stride, content that they still have enough points on the board to stay on course for their objective. One of them would view a defeat as a hammer blow to their top-four hopes. The rest will be in a right old flap about their survival chances if they don't take three vital points.

What it all means for us is tension and drama, people. Just how we like it.
