Leeds v West Ham (19:45 GMT)

Leeds have lost their last five Premier League matches against London clubs, despite taking the lead in three of those games (vs Crystal Palace, Fulham and Tottenham).

It’s Leeds’ worst league losing run against teams from the capital since between April 1957 and March 1958 (also five), while they've never lost six in a row in their league history.

Leeds v West Ham (19:45 GMT)

    Chris SuttonImage source, BBC Sport

Leeds gave Newcastle a decent game last time out and defended well to get a draw. Ordinarily, I would say the way they play suits West Ham but, whatever is wrong with the Hammers, I don't see it improving here.

David Moyes' side have lost their past five Premier League games while only scoring twice and that lack of goals is probably their biggest problem.

I am writing West Ham off here - although I've been wrong about them so often this season, that is probably good news for their fans.

    Prediction: 2-1

Having lost just two of their first 20 Premier League meetings with West Ham between 1993 and 2003 (W14 D4), Leeds have lost three of their four against the Hammers since their return to the top-flight (W1).

West Ham have won their last two Premier League away games against Leeds, as many as they had in their previous 33 league visits to Elland Road (D8 L23). It's the first time the Hammers have ever won back-to-back away league games against the Whites.

West Ham also won those two games despite going 1-0 down both times. The only side to win three consecutive Premier League away games against a side despite conceding the first goal each time are Everton, who did so at West Ham in 2012-13, 2013-14 and 2014-15.

Wolves won 2-1 against Everton in their last away Premier League game, as many wins as they’d had in their previous 14 on the road (W1 D3 L10).

They are looking for consecutive away wins for the first time since winning four in a row between December 2021 and February 2022.

Villa striker Danny Ings has been involved in four goals in his last five Premier League appearances against Wolves (three goals, one assist). In all competitions, he has netted in his last three games against them (three goals).

Ollie Watkins has been involved in at least one goal in his last three home Premier League appearances (2 goals, 1 assist), including scoring but ending on the losing side in a 3-1 defeat to Liverpool in Villa’s final home game of 2022. Watkins has now lost in five home Premier League games he’s scored in for Aston Villa, with only Christian Benteke losing more games he’s scored in at Villa Park in the Premier League (6).

    Sutton's prediction: 1-1

We've already seen an improvement from Wolves under Julen Lopetegui. They lost to Manchester United last time out but they ran them very close and played with a bit of purpose, and I am expecting that to continue here.

I like what Unai Emery is doing with Aston Villa too and it will be interesting to see his approach here. They are also a well-drilled side, and this should be another close game.

Aston Villa v Wolves (20:00 GMT)

Aston Villa manager Unai Emery suffered his first home defeat with the club in their 3-1 reverse against Liverpool on Boxing Day, only his third ever home Premier League defeat in 28 games, including his spell at Arsenal (W18 D7).

Emery hasn’t lost consecutive home league games since April 2021 with Villarreal in La Liga.

  10. 'It's stressful beyond belief'published at 19:05 Greenwich Mean Time 4 January 2023

Leeds v West Ham (19:45 GMT)

    Jesse MarschImage source, Getty Images

Leeds boss Jesse Marsch says he "hates the stress" that comes with being a Premier League manager.

The 49-year-old has been in charge at Elland Road for just over 10 months, having succeeded Marcelo Bielsa at the end of February last year.

Leeds secured top-flight survival on the final day of last season and are currently 14th in the table - two points clear of the relegation places.

"It's stressful beyond belief," said American Marsch.

"I try to enjoy the moments and try to be there for the team and what they need, but I hate the stress.

"The enjoyment is in the people, the players and the relationships we have, the people in the staff and the extended staff.

"There's nothing better than standing in the [technical area] before the [first] whistle - it's right where you want to be. But it's also awful."

    • Wolves did the league double over Aston Villa last season, last winning three in a row against them between April 1957 and December 1960 (a run of 7).
    • Wolves manager Julen Lopetegui and Aston Villa’s Unai Emery have already faced once this season in La Liga, with Villarreal drawing 1-1 with Sevilla in September. It’s the first time ever that two managers have faced in both the Premier League and La Liga in the same season.

    Leeds v West Ham (19:45GMT)

    Simon Stone
    BBC Sport at Elland Road

West Ham manager David Moyes could argue that part of the reason for his side's poor form this season has been a chronic injury list.

There was huge expectation around Nayef Aguerd when he signed for the Hammers for £30m in the summer.

But the Moroccan got injured in pre-season and although he did get fit in time for the World Cup, a further knock on the African nation's amazing run to the semi-finals means it is only now Aguerd is starting a league game for the first time.

  14. Team news - Martinez returns for Villa, Cunha on Wolves benchpublished at 19:00 Greenwich Mean Time 4 January 2023

Aston Villa v Wolves (20:00 GMT)

Aston Villa manager Unai Emery has named two changes following Sunday's impressive 2-0 win at Tottenham.

Goalkeeper Emiliano Martinez makes his first appearance since lifting the World Cup with Argentina last month, replacing Robin Olsen.

Matty Cash also returns to the starting line-up, as John McGinn misses out with injury.

Aston Villa XI: Martinez, Cash, Mings, Konsa, Digne, Kamara, Luiz, Buendia, Young, Watkins, Bailey.

Subs: Olsen, Sanson, Ings, Chambers, Augustinsson, Bednarek, Coutinho, Dendoncker, K Young.

Wolves XI: Sa, Semedo, Collins, Kilman, Bueno, Neves, Nunes, Hwang, Moutinho, Podence, Costa.

Wolves have already been active in the January window, bringing in a forward to boost their scoring prospects. Matheus Cunha has arrived, initially on loan, from Atletico Madrid to try and add further to a goals tally that stands at just 10 - the lowest in the division.

Cunha, 23, will sign a permanent four-year deal at the end of the season for fee that could rise to 40m euros (£35m).

The forward began his professional career with Swiss side Sion in 2017, going on to play for RB Leipzig and Hertha Berlin in Germany before joining Spanish side Atletico Madrid in the summer of 2021, where he has scored seven goals in 54 appearances.

He was part of the Brazil Under-23 side that won gold at the Tokyo Olympics and has eight senior caps, though he missed out on the squad for the Qatar World Cup.

Cunha is on the bench tonight, but you'd imagine we'll see him at some point.

Adama Traore says Julen Lopetegui "has changed everything" since his arrival at the club.

The winger says the new Wolves manager has shown belief in him and he promises to repay him on the pitch.

Traore said: "He knows me from when I was in Spain and he believes in me and I’m going to give that belief back in the pitch.

"We believe in him and like you’re seeing on the pitch, there’s an excitement. But we’re going to keep believing in him, we’re going to keep working and the good results are going to come.

"Everything has changed. He’s changed everything; the way to play, the way he talks, the way he talks to the players and the staff and everyone inside of the club. But our focus is to believe in him and follow his plan."

  18. 'Track record means you back Emery to succeed at Villa'published at 18:54 Greenwich Mean Time 4 January 2023

Aston Villa v Wolves (20:00 GMT)

Unai Emery's tactical nous has been the reason behind his impressive start to life as Aston Villa manager, says the club's former midfielder Nigel Reo-Coker.

Villa have beaten three top-10 teams in Emery's opening five games to move clear of trouble in the Premier League after following up victories over Manchester United and Brighton with Sunday's 2-0 win at Tottenham.

"Emery has always been a manager that is very tactical in his approach," Reo-Coker told the Football Daily Podcast on BBC Sounds.

"I think the difference this time, compared to his time at Arsenal, he was over-thinking back then. He was doing too much changing, there was too much going on and a lot of the players didn’t really buy into it.

"But I think with Villa he’s learnt from his Arsenal mistakes and he’s only tweaked a few things.

"In the games they’ve played it’s clear to see that every player knows what’s expected, what they’re doing and there’s a great enthusiasm."

ESPN senior writer Mark Ogden agreed, adding: "I think the squad has looked at him and he’s got credentials having taken Villarreal to Europa League success.

"He has a prolonged track record in the game that means you back him to sustain it and take Villa to the next level where they want to be."

  19. 'Villa look very well organised under Emery'published at 18:54 Greenwich Mean Time 4 January 2023

Aston Villa v Wolves (20:00 GMT)

Former Premier League goalkeeper Mark Schwarzer says Aston Villa's transformation under Unai Emery shows what a quality manager he is.

Villa have won three of the five games under the Spaniard since he replaced Steven Gerrard and Schwarzer told BBC Radio 5 Live's Football Daily: "It’s not rocket science.

"So many times in my career managers didn’t have that detail and you know the difference when the manager knows how to set a team up, work through things, drill the players and this side looks very well organised.

"The first half [against Tottenham] wasn’t the greatest but Villa are a side in transition with the new manager, a new way of playing, everyone getting to know each other still.

"They came into their own in the second half and from going 1-0 up they controlled the game and never really looked in danger."

David Gold's image is on the London Stadium this evening as West Ham mourn the passing of their joint-chairman.

Both sides will wear black armbands in memory of Gold, who died earlier today at the age of 86.

Gold was present at two pretty important West Ham events I attended over the past 16 months, the unveiling of a statue marking the contribution of Bobby Moore, Sir Geoff Hurst and Martin Peters in September last year and also the academy pitch named in Mark Noble's honour at the club's Chadwell Heath training ground in May.

Born in Stepney, Gold was a West Ham man through and through.
