    But the headlines are...

Arsenal are two points clear at the top of the Premier League after a last-gasp win over Aston Villa coupled with Manchester City's 1-1 draw with Nottingham Forest.

Three of the bottom five won today, with Southampton beating Chelsea, Everton defeating Leeds and Bournemouth seeing off Wolves.

Fulham beat their unlikely rivals for a European place Brighton and Brentford scored in injury time to hold Crystal Palace.

And then Liverpool beat Newcastle to boost their Champions League hopes.

    FT: Newcastle 0-2 Liverpool

This was Jurgen Klopp's 10th successive Premier League win against a side managed by Eddie Howe.

That is just the third time one manager has had as long a run against an opponent after Pep Guardiola, also against Howe, and Alex Ferguson against Gordon Strachan.

  4. 'We didn't react particularly well to red card'published at 20:20 Greenwich Mean Time 18 February 2023

    FT: Newcastle 0-2 Liverpool

    Liverpool

Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp, speaking to Sky Sports: "Massive result, clean sheet, two wonderful goals and space for improvement. I thought we did really well – the red card probably would have been a wonderful goal as well if Pope hadn't got his hand on the ball.

"Against 10 men we didn't react particularly well. Newcastle had nothing to lose anymore. You could see they're a top team with top character – they threw everything on the pitch. And we gave them too many set pieces.

"The most negative thing was that Darwin [Nunez] had to go off. We have to see how serious that is – hopefully not too much. We have to fight through these things. A third goal would have been extremely helpful, but we had to fight until the end.

"The relief of the 2-0, the red card, and all of a sudden one step less and the rhythm was gone. I wish we'd have done that better, but in the end I'm really happy we got it over the line.

"Diogo [Jota] could have scored. Bobby [Firmino] started really well and then lost two or three balls that pretty much gave them counter-attacks. Getting through this is the next step for them. Virgil [Van Dijk], playing 90 minutes was hard for him. All the rest was really good."

Liverpool ended a three-game losing streak on the road in the Premier League, keeping an away clean sheet for just the second time this term. The other was a goalless draw at Everton in September.

  10. 'It's too early to say we are there again'published at 20:09 Greenwich Mean Time 18 February 2023

    Liverpool

Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp to BBC Sport: "Against 10 men for that long time you could of course create more and score more but we lost in that moment a little bit of momentum and didn't get it 100% back and left the door open for Newcastle.

"In the end, with our situation, someone told me the last time we had a clean sheet away from home it was in April, so I'm happy.

"The goals we scored were perfect against 11. We played really well, but then against 10 we lost for a moment the grip and couldn't get it back. But we still had our moments where we should have scored more in the second half.

"After you score a third one it's definitely over. We didn't so we had to fight until the end. And we needed the long leg of James Milner who was outstanding again.

"We are a step further forward.

"Both goals were outstanding. The pass from Trent [Alexander-Arnold] for Darwin [Nunez] and from Mo [Salah] to Cody [Gakpo] [was] top class. A bit more of that would have been really great, but for today it's absolutely fine.

"When you are not in your best moment you have to fight for this, and that's what we did we got our second win in a row. It feels great to be honest. We haven't had this for ages so it's a good day.

"We will see, we face one of the best teams in the world on Tuesday so it's difficult. But it's at Anfield so let's go.

"It's too early to say we are there again. But of course we will keep fighting and we will see."

The League Cup final will be two days short of two years since Loris Karius' last first-team game of football - for Union Berlin against Hoffenheim in the Bundesliga.

Mark Gillespie, 30, played three League Cup games for Newcastle in September 2020, shortly after joining on a free transfer from Motherwell, but nothing since.

  12. 'Karius and Gillespie are match ready'published at 20:02 Greenwich Mean Time 18 February 2023

    FT: Newcastle 0-2 Liverpool

    Newcastle United

Newcastle boss Eddie Howe on Loris Karius or Mark Gillespie starting the EFL Cup final: "They've started games away from competitive action in several friendlies and training games. I'd say they're match ready.

"I would have confidence in them, that's what they're in the squad for. They've both been very competitive and part of our group all season. I have full confidence.

"There's been games where Nick [Pope] has had very little to do, there have also been moments where he has stepped up and made world-class saves for us. But we need to make sure we go into next week with the mindset that we protect our goal, as we have done all season, regardless of who the goalkeeper is. That doesn't change our focus on the defensive display.

"We've got to digest this quickly and look forward to what is an exciting week for us."

  13. 'I feel really sorry for Pope'published at 20:00 Greenwich Mean Time 18 February 2023

    FT: Newcastle 0-2 Liverpool

    Newcastle United

Newcastle boss Eddie Howe to Sky Sports: "A lot happened in the game, a good start from us and we had the first chance in the game. We conceded two goals which is unlike us. I was disappointed with the goals, I thought we need to look back at them.

"Against these sorts of teams that's the last thing you want to see especially with the scoreline. I feel really sorry for Nick [Pope]. It's a very difficult one, he's come out and slightly misjudged the ball, I suppose technically it is a handball, I don't know the rules on the red card.

"I thought it was on the angle with defenders retreating to our goal but that was given. I thought the reaction to that sending off was brilliant from the team. I thought we stayed in the game and were competitive, we created chances and I felt if we could get the next goal we had a route back into the game but that never happened.

"I've had spells like this in my managerial career where you create chances and the goals don't come. But I back the players to come out of it, we've got too much quality not to."

  14. 'I'm incredibly happy'published at 19:57 Greenwich Mean Time 18 February 2023

    FT: Newcastle 0-2 Liverpool

    Liverpool

Liverpool defender Virgil Van Dijk, speaking to BBC Match of the Day: "Winning and keeping a clean sheet against a side who have only been beaten once this season – it was well deserved. Obviously there were moments were we could have done better, but to come away with three points and a clean sheet and to be back in the team, I’m incredibly happy. I’m very proud of the guys.

"This season has been challenging. We’ve conceded too many goals – that’s part of football sometimes too, unfortunately.

"They have quality players, but we could have scored two or three more as well. If you finish the game off, that dents their confidence further.

"Winning gives you confidence. The turnaround is so quick. We’ll do everything necessary to be ready for Real Madrid. That’s how we’ve been preparing for these last few years."

  15. 'We played very well'published at 19:53 Greenwich Mean Time 18 February 2023

    FT: Newcastle 0-2 Liverpool

    Newcastle United

Newcastle winger Allan Saint-Maximin, speaking to Sky Sports: "It’s a very bad day. I feel sad for Nick Pope because he tried to help the team. It’s a bad red card for the team because he won’t be able to play the [Carabao] Cup final. He helped us to be in that situation, so we need to support him and get behind him as a team.

"I think we played very well. We had the first chance with Miggy [Almiron] and after that they scored straight away. It was painful, but we just kept going to try to create more chances. Even with 10 men, we kept playing very well. We still had many chances, so I think it’s very positive to see how we can play with 10 men.

"Even though Liverpool aren’t in the top positions at the moment, they’re still a great team. They showed that today. I think we need to be focused for the cup game, but I’m very disappointed about this game. It’s always important to win before an important game.

"The real positive is that even with 10 men – they’re still playing in the Champions League – we played very well and created so many chances to come back. We can be very proud of that, because I know many teams in that situation wouldn’t create the chances we created.

"I’m sure we can cause Manchester United a lot of problems."

  16. 'We've got decisions to make' - Howe on keeper problemspublished at 19:50 Greenwich Mean Time 18 February 2023

    FT: Newcastle 0-2 Liverpool

    Newcastle United

Newcastle manager Eddie Howe to BBC Sport: "I thought it was actually a good performance in the main. We started really well. We had a good early chance and the crowd were in the game, the tempo was good and we were set for a really good match.

"I thought they were clinical with their chances when they came and obviously Nick Pope's sending-off changed the game.

"I've not had a proper word with him but I've seen him and he looks visibly upset. He's been outstanding for us this season.

"It was probably technically handball but I don't know the rules on red cards outside the box. For me it was a harsh reaction but I understand if it's in the rules. It's harsh for Nick because he's been magnificent for us and to miss the next game is a huge blow for him.

"We've got a decision to make. Mark Gillespie has trained very well this season as has Loris [Karius].

"There was real quality, we opened Liverpool up at times and created some real chances. That's the difference, they took their chances and we didn't take ours."

Nick Pope’s red card was the fifth instance of a Newcastle goalkeeper being sent off in the Premier League, with only Liverpool and Aston Villa (six each) seeing more.

The late Pavel Srnicek was sent off three times between 1993 and 1995 and Rob Elliott was sent off against QPR in May 2013.

  18. 'It's starting to feel like the Liverpool team we're used to'published at 19:45 Greenwich Mean Time 18 February 2023

    FT: Newcastle 0-2 Liverpool

    Liverpool

Liverpool defender Trent Alexander-Arnold, speaking to Sky Sports: "It’s massive. This was a big one. We got our win against Everton, that was a massive one for us as well. It would have meant nothing if we'd come here and hadn’t backed it up with another win.

"They're a tough side to beat but we picked them apart. The red card settled things down for us. Not many teams come here and win, so we’re delighted to take the three points home.

"Any stage of the game, you need a goal – especially the opening goal and at a place like this. The atmosphere's top, so it's important to get an early goal to settle that down. It was a good sequence of play, something we've worked on in training. It was a great run from Darwin and a great finish.

"It's been a season where we haven't had much confidence. We've had good performances here and there but no consistent period so far. We're used to going on winning streaks, we know how to put them together. It's starting to feel - and look - like the Liverpool team that we're used to.

"It's a great stepping stone for us. It's the same set of players as last season, but we've put that aside and it's looking like a team that can string together a lot of wins between now and the end of the season."

    Liverpool

Liverpool's Virgil van Dijk to Sky Sports: "Let's hope [it's a significant result]. We've had results in the season where we have felt like this is the time to kick on. But this feels a little bit different. Coming away from the big win against Everton, it was important to keep going and find a way to win.

"The red card changed the game a little bit. We could have done better, but there is a reason why we are the only team to win here. I am very proud of the boys, now we must recover in time for Real Madrid in the next game.

"We have had a difficult season, but to come and win here, I'm really proud.

"It feels very good [to be back from injury.] Being healthy is the most important thing in the world. It was a tough six weeks but I'm back, hopefully I will do everything in my power to recover and be ready for the Champions League game, it is very massive for us.

"It's a lot of hard work behind the scenes but I'm happy to be contributing to the team.

"I think this whole season has proven any team can beat any team. We want to find consistency with what we have been doing the last five years. We want to be building consistency as a club.

"Today and in the last game against Everton we showed that. This is a good step and we'll take it. On to the next one."
