Manchester City emerged victorious in a Carabao Cup thriller at Etihad Stadium as Nathan Ake's first goal since April eventually saw off the challenge of holders Liverpool.

City led three times and, on the first two occasions, they were pegged back. On the second occasion, it took Mohamed Salah only one minute to restore parity after Riyad Mahrez had cut inside off Rodri's brilliant crossfield pass and found the bottom corner.

But, just as he had done for Erling Haaland's opener - and 24th goal of the season - Kevin de Bruyne delivered a superb far-post cross after 58 minutes, which dropped just over Nat Phillips' head and perfectly for Ake, who nodded home.

City deserved their win, which keeps Pep Guardiola on track for his fifth triumph in this competition, which would make him the most successful manager in its history.

However, Liverpool - for whom Fabio Carvalho had scored a first equaliser midway through the first half - had their chances, with Darwin Nunez three times shooting across the face of goal and wide of the far post when he was positioned to do much better.

Nunez did set up Salah for his goal when he completely outpaced Aymeric Laporte, but there was no third response from the visitors, whose defence of the trophy is at an end.

  10. 'A big compliment to the players'published at 22:46 Greenwich Mean Time 22 December 2022

    FT: Manchester City 3-2 Liverpool

    Manchester City

Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola, speaking to Sky Sports:

"After the World Cup and a long time without playing, both teams played at an incredibly high level of intensity. Liverpool are so difficult, when they play good, they can destroy you.

"It was a good game and an entertaining game. A big compliment to the players for how they played.

"Kevin de Bruyne played with fire inside of him. How many years has he been here? Seven or eight years? He is an absolute legend and always I push him to find that fire.

"Cole Palmer played really well, especially in the first half. The way Rico Lewis played against Liverpool, with the stars they have up front, we are incredibly lucky to have this player for the next decade. Hopefully the club can take him. The game he played was exceptional."

  12. 'The goals we conceded were completely unnecessary'published at 22:35 Greenwich Mean Time 22 December 2022

    FT: Manchester City 3-2 Liverpool

    Liverpool

Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp, speaking to Sky Sports:

"We played a formation that we haven't played for a long time, and we had to change in pretty much our last session. You could see that, we needed time to adapt.

"In the first 15 minutes we had real problems and that killed our confidence and conviction a little bit.

"The goals we conceded were completely unnecessary. We had good spells and could have scored more goals as well. It's a result we have to live with now.

"It was a high-intensity game from both teams, that's normal. We played a good game but not good enough to beat City tonight. That says something but not everything. It's just how it is.

"There's a lot we can build on and we can take into the next games and that's what we'll do."

We're still waiting on the quarter-final draw. It's coming. Soon.

    FT: Manchester City 3-2 Liverpool

Liverpool won two cups - the FA Cup and the EFL Cup - last season, narrowly missed out on the Premier League title and lost in the Champions League final.

This year has been much tougher and they are sixth in the Premier League and have to face Real Madrid in the last 16 of the Champions League.

  15. 'Ultimately disappointing'published at 22:15 Greenwich Mean Time 22 December 2022

    FT: Manchester City 3-2 Liverpool

    Liverpool

Liverpool defender Andy Robertson, speaking to BBC Radio 5 Live: "There were positives, creating chances, sometimes we looked good on the ball but there were mistakes as well. It's our first game back in a long time and it's not often you're first game back is against Manchester City.

"We wanted to stay in this cup, we know how much joy it brought us last season. Ultimately disappointing but when we look at the clips we will be able to take positives.

"It's a good game, both sets of players were out on their feet, we always raise our games against each other. We didn't start great, go behind, Fabio scored a fabulous goal, we went behind early in the second half, reacted so well, had a couple of chances, then we switched off at a short corner.

"These are things that can't happen - their changing room will be a lot happier than ours."

  16. 'We were very good'published at 22:12 Greenwich Mean Time 22 December 2022

    FT: Manchester City 3-2 Liverpool

    Manchester City

Manchester City goalscorer Riyad Mahrez told Sky Sports: "It's always good to score and to help the team win. Overall we were very good today and deserved to win.

"Everyone came back with a very good mentality and ready to start again. It was a tough opponent to start with."

On who City might get in the next round: "We've beaten Chelsea and Liverpool [in the Carabao Cup already] so we'll see. But we'll take it game by game and concentrate on the next Premier League game, which is the most important one for us at the moment."

  17. 'Things to improve'published at 22:07 Greenwich Mean Time 22 December 2022

    FT: Manchester City 3-2 Liverpool

    Manchester City

Winning goalscorer Nathan Ake, speaking to BBC Radio 5 Live: "The last week has been a bit strange, people coming back at different times then straight into having to play an intense game against Liverpool and it's not easy.

"They have top quality players, we should've done better with the goals but we manged to score more than them. There are things to improve but for the first game back it was good. It was another top, top ball from Kevin [De Bruyne] and I had to score that one.

"You've been away for a month and the national team is different, then suddenly you are straight back in it. Strange but good, as a player you want to be involved in major tournaments like that."

I believe on this performance, a bit more quality in the final third got City over the line.

Liverpool's fighting spirit was good and their performance was better.
