Marcus Rashford wasted no time readjusting to club matters after his World Cup campaign with England as he scored a fine solo goal in Manchester United's EFL Cup win over Burnley at Old Trafford.

Rashford was one of five United players on duty in Qatar to make manager Erik ten Hag's starting line-up.

And after one, Christian Eriksen, had put the hosts ahead just before the half hour with a fine first-time finish after Aaron Wan-Bissaka has provided his first goal assist since May 2021, Rashford took centre stage 12 minutes into the second period.

Given too much space as Burnley's defence backed off, Rashford started running 10 yards inside his own half and didn't stop until he had sprinted into the box, darted between Jack Cork and Jordan Beyer and driven his ninth goal of the season into the bottom corner.

It was enough to earn United only their second home win inside 90 minutes in this competition in five years.

  2. League One Charlton upset Brighton in shootout win - read the reportpublished at 19:32 Greenwich Mean Time 22 December 2022

League One Charlton stunned top-flight Brighton on penalties after a goalless draw to reach the quarter-finals of the Carabao Cup.

The Addicks defended well to keep their opposition at bay in normal time, with Brighton toothless in front of goal.

The Seagulls were dominant with 18 shots across the game but unable to convert their chances.

Charlton's win sees them become the only non-Premier League side to reach the last eight.

  3. Johnson inspires Forest into EFL Cup last eight - read the reportpublished at 19:32 Greenwich Mean Time 22 December 2022

    Blackburn 1-4 Nottingham Forest

An inspired performance from Brennan Johnson helped Nottingham Forest overcome Blackburn at Ewood Park to reach the Carabao Cup quarter-finals.

The forward put the visitors ahead from the penalty spot, but Blackburn equalised shortly before half-time through Scott Wharton.

Jesse Lingard's deflected free-kick restored Forest's advantage before a Taiwo Awoniyi strike made it three.

Johnson scored a second late on to complete an impressive display.

Blackburn manager Jon Dahl Tomasson made 11 changes from the team which beat Norwich City on Saturday, and the Championship promotion hunters - currently third in the second tier - struggled to contain Forest; and especially Johnson.

  4. Newcastle edge past Bournemouth into last eight - read the reportpublished at 19:30 Greenwich Mean Time 22 December 2022

    FT: Newcastle 1-0 Bournemouth

Newcastle reached the quarter-finals of the Carabao Cup with a hard-fought win over Bournemouth at St James Park.

Adam Smith's own goal proved decisive for the hosts, with the defender inadvertently heading past Cherries goalkeeper Mark Travers from Kieran Trippier's superb delivery.

It was no more than Eddie Howe's side deserved with the home team creating the bulk of the goalscoring chances.

Newcastle will find out who they meet next in Thursday evening's draw.

Magpies boss Howe included goalkeeper Nick Pope, full-back Trippier and forward Callum Wilson, who were all part of England's World Cup squad in Qatar, in the starting XI against Howe's old club.

Switzerland defender Fabian Schar and Brazil midfielder Bruno Guimaraes also began the contest for a home side that appeared close to full strength.

  5. Saints come from behind to beat Lincoln in EFL Cup - read the reportpublished at 19:29 Greenwich Mean Time 22 December 2022

    FT: Southampton 2-1 Lincoln City

Che Adams celebrates scoring for Southampton against LincolnImage source, Reuters

Che Adams' double helped Southampton come from behind and avoid a shock against League One Lincoln City in the Carabao Cup fourth round.

The win gives Nathan Jones his first win as Saints boss, after losing his only previous match in charge at Liverpool on 12 November.

His side fell behind early when Gavin Bazunu failed to deal with Ainsley Maitland-Niles' sliced clearance. But Adams scored either side of the break to see Southampton through.

The two goals represent the first time Southampton have scored more than one in a game since their win over Chelsea on 30 August.

It is the first time they have reached the quarter-finals of the competition since they lost to Manchester United in the 2017 final.

  6. Winning start for Lopetegui as Wolves edge Gillingham - read the reportpublished at 19:28 Greenwich Mean Time 22 December 2022

    FT: Wolves 2-0 Gillingham

Julen Lopetegui got off to a winning start as Wolves manager as they edged into the Carabao Cup quarter-finals at the expense of Gillingham.

The Premier League strugglers finally found the breakthrough on 77 minutes through a Raul Jimenez penalty after Hwang Hee-chan was fouled.

Rayan Ait-Nouri then secured the win in stoppage time following a breakaway.

Gillingham, bottom of League Two, were spirited but eventually outgunned by their hosts.

Former Real Madrid and Spain manager Lopetegui's first game in charge of Wolves had been a long time coming, after he replaced the sacked Bruno Lage in November.

  7. Leicester too good for League One MK Dons - read the reportpublished at 19:24 Greenwich Mean Time 22 December 2022

    FT: MK Dons 0-3 Leicester

    LeicesterImage source, Getty Images

Leicester strolled past MK Dons to reach the Carabao Cup quarter-finals in their first game after the World Cup.

Youri Tielemans and Ayoze Perez gave the Foxes a two-goal cushion by the break before Jamie Vardy added another.

Chances were sporadic for the hosts at Stadium MK and they did not make the most of their few opportunities.

Premier League Leicester were a step above and their sharpness in the final third was too much for the League One side to handle.

Khan Karn: I really like Bajcetic, he's a great prospect but going to Man City at the Etihad I don't understand why Klopp doesn't give Keita and Ox a game. Neither went to the World Cup and should be given a chance in Cup games to gain their place in the starting 11.

City are always going to be in and around any competition, Premier League and Champions League included, but you have to have a bench like that in order to be in the latter stages of big competitions.

This is a competition they both want to win, by the way. They want this one to be the start of the silverware for the season, so they're not going to take it lightly.

  14. 'An important match to regain the rhythm'published at 19:13 Greenwich Mean Time 22 December 2022

Manchester City v Liverpool (20:00 GMT)

Manchester City had 16 players away at the World Cup, more than any other Premier League side.

Ilkay Gundogan and Kevin De Bruyne played in a 2-0 friendly win against Girona last week but Rodri, Aymeric Laporte, Nathan Ake and Manuel Akanji have only been back in training a few days.

Those involved with England and Portugal, along with goalkeeper Ederson, were due to report back later, while Julian Alvarez will not return until next week. Erling Haaland, Riyad Mahrez, Sergio Gomez and Cole Palmer were not involved in the tournament.

Boss Pep Guardiola said: “Step by step people come back. We are happy they are back, in general they played really well.

“I have a feeling that the players in the World Cup are in a better condition than the players who were here. Sergio, Erling, Riyad, Cole, they missed a little bit.

“This match is important for players not at the World Cup to regain the rhythm.”

Goalkeeper Alisson and defenders Trent Alexander-Arnold and Virgil van Dijk have also not been included in the squad after being at the World Cup with their countries.

Liverpool XI: Kelleher, Milner, Gomez, Matip, Robertson, Bajcetic, Thiago, Elliott, Carvalho, Salah, Nunez.
