On a day when the initial top two couldn't be separated, United have taken advantage in formidable fashion.

Manager Marc Skinner will also voice his pleasure, no doubt, with his squad depth after Martha Thomas and Rachel Williams came on and increased their goal difference superiority over Arsenal, who they've knocked into third.

United have four highly winnable-looking fixtures before they head to Chelsea on 12 March. What a game that could be.

Aside from a spell at the start of the second half when they seemed reinvigorated, Liverpool offered little resistance.

They remain ninth after a match in which they had four shots - their lowest total in a WSL game this season.

This is the abrupt reality of where Liverpool are at compared to arguably one of the best teams in the league. The rise to that position has been very quick for Man United.

    Rachel Williams (84 mins)

Both managers have introduced a procession of changes in the hope of a substitute striking again - and one of United's pays off by heading in their sixth!

Hayley Ladd reaches the edge of the penalty area on the right and curls an inviting cross towards Rachel Williams, who does well to adjust her feet quickly and allow herself to nod in almost on the line, taking advantage of more disorganised defending.

This has been a goal party to remember for United. Chelsea, who they'll be three points behind tonight, have only scored two more than them now.

    Leicester 1-0 Brighton

After nine losses in a row at the start of the season, bottom-of-the-league Leicester lead at the break thanks to a goal from Aileen Whelan against her former side.

Brighton, in Jens Scheuer's first WSL game in charge, have work to do.

Aileen Whelan has one goal, and nearly gets a second flicking over the top when well placed as Leicester are ending this first half strongly.

That was Martha Thomas' second touch, and it was a brilliant ball from the left-hand side this time. Liverpool had showed things up down the right.

Good play from Thorisdottir, who just come on as well. She creates so much space down that side and what a ball that is, putting it on a plate.

It has taken 40 minutes but we finally have a shot on target and it has come from Brighton's Veatriki Sarri, who shot from 20 yards out high, but a jumping Janina Leitzig, on her Leicester debut, does well to grasp the ball above her head.

    Martha Thomas (72 mins)

It's a first WSL goal of the season for Martha Thomas!

The substitute only joined the action a minute earlier, replacing Lucia Garcia alongside Maria Thorisdottir, who came on for Hannah Blundell.

Ella Toone puts this on a plate like a Sunday roast for Thomas, firing across a pinpoint low cross from the left touchline that meets her target's run at the far post perfectly while cutting out Liverpool's backline. All that remains is for the headbanded forward to hammer the finish into the back of the net!

There were plenty of Liverpool players defending in the box for that goal but it is hardly effective if you are all on top of your goalkeeper.

As a goalkeeper, you got to marshal your players and organise them in front of you.

United add to their supremacy and move two goals above Arsenal in second place in the WSL!

Ona Batlle has foraged productively down the right for much of the afternoon. This time she teases Megan Campbell on the edge of the penalty area before skimming in a low cross that allows Millie Turner a shot, which is turned in by the unfortunate Emma Koivisto.

Liverpool are snapping in to challenges, and Gemma Bonner is cautioned for over-zealousness with one attempt to win the ball back.

Nikita Parris heads a cross behind but the flag is up. Had the visitors played like this during the first half, this could be a very different game - the likes of Ella Toone, Alessia Russo and Lucia Garcia have barely been on the ball since the break.
