We have been there as players where you aren't performing the way you want. Son spoke about confidence. We have all suffered from not having it.

When Son is on form, running into the box, he is a brilliant player. We were frustrated when not performing his best.

  4. 'I needed those goals'published at 19:59 Greenwich Mean Time 28 January 2023

    FT: Preston 0-3 Tottenham

    Tottenham Hotspur

Tottenham forward Son Heung-min, speaking to BBC One: “I needed those goals for my confidence. It was really important. It was the kind of position I like to shoot. In the first half I had a couple of chances to shoot but the keeper made a good save.

“As a striker or as an attacking player, the important thing is that you get that goal. It’s important that I could help the team go to the next round. I’m very, very happy.

“When you look at the scoresheet it looks like a comfortable win, but the FA Cup has never been comfortable. We suffered a lot away from home. The lads did an amazing job.

“There’s a lot to talk about our performance, but we were focused and did what we had to do. We can still improve so much. I think this game can give us good energy and let's move on to next weekend [at home to Manchester City].”

Reading boss Paul Ince won the FA Cup twice with Manchester United but I don't think his return to Old Trafford will have a happy ending.

United boss Erik ten Hag is clearly taking both domestic cups seriously and we saw how well they played to beat Nottingham Forest in the first leg of their Carabao Cup semi-final this week.

Ten Hag is not just using new signing Wout Weghorst to lead his attack, he is using him properly and looking to give him lots of service in the box. I can see Weghorst getting a few chances in this game too.

    Sutton's prediction: 3-0

Man Utd v Reading (20:00 GMT)

    Manchester United

Manchester United manager Erik Ten Hag speaking to ITV: "We have to be ready that is why we have a strong selection. Harry [Maguire] is back.

"I already said yesterday [in the pre-match press conference] he was ill when he returned from the World Cup, otherwise he should have played a couple of games. But you have to play to get back into the rhythm. He did already play some games, but I think this is a good game for him to return in, especially when you see the height of the opponent.

"He had some chances. But every player has to pick their chances. He is training very well, training very dominant. And that is what I want to see from him. He is a leader and cpatin and I have big expectations of him.

"[But] it’s not just about Harry. As a team, we want to achieve, we want to achieve a result this season. We need a squad. So every player has to make a performance, has to give the best he has."

Reading are in the bottom half of the Championship - but still within five points of the top six.

They haven't won a league game this season but did beat Watford in the FA Cup third round.

Manchester United have won eight of their 10 games since the World Cup. They beat Everton in the previous round.

If Marcus Rashford scores for Manchester United this evening against Reading he'll become the first player in the club's history to score in 10 consecutive fixtures at Old Trafford.

Rashford equalled Dennis Viollet's long-standing record of scoring in nine successive home matches when he slid home the winner against Manchester City in the derby.

Viollet, who scored 179 goals in 293 games between 1952 and 1962, set his record in the opening few months of the 1959-60 season.

Teddy Sheringham did score in nine games in a row back in the 2000-01 season, but he missed a home fixture against Leeds United during that run.

Wonderful start for Danjuma. Started really well. Made a few interesting and good runs then gets his reward with the goal.

Spurs worked it well again with the ball. Just about getting the connection. Not the best strike but he won't care because he got it in the corner.
