Great defending by Tariq Lamptey to intercept a pass intended for Mo Salah and calmly guide it back to his keeper. Almost another golden chance for the Reds.

The best chance of the match.

Salah comes in from the right-hand side, Steele comes out and narrows the angle but it's never going in as soon as it leaves his foot.

Mo Salah would have put that away with his eyes closed last season.

He's scored just three since 6 November. That should have been four.

  4. CLOSE!published at 24 mins

    Brighton 0-0 Liverpool

Mo Salah cannot believe it. A delicious pass by Harvey Elliott and the Liverpool forward is clean through but rolls it wide. That is a huge chance.

You feel something is going to happen because both sides are so positive.

There's an edge to the game.

It's a good line up from Brighton and Liverpool have pace up at the top.

I don't think it's going to be 0-0, famous last words.

    Brighton 0-0 Liverpool

Brighton are playing with so much confidence. A lovely lay-off by Evan Ferguson presents Kaoru Mitoma with a chance.

He forces Alisson into the save but should he have hit that first time?

  7. Baker and Jagielka dropped to Stoke benchpublished at 13:51 Greenwich Mean Time 29 January 2023

    Stoke v Stevenage (14:00 GMT)

Ten minutes from kick-off in the second tie of the day.

Midfielder Lewis Baker and veteran defender Phil Jagielka are among the Stoke players dropped to the bench at Bet365 Stadium.

Connor Taylor comes in at centre-back and will play alongside former Stevenage defender Ben Wilmot. There is also a starting place for Bersant Celina.

Jamie Reid, who came off the bench to score in Stevenage’s victory over Aston Villa, starts this time. But Dean Campbell, who netted the winner in that tie, is again on the bench.

Kit Marlowe: As a Liverpool admirer, not necessarily a fan, I think Liverpool have been cursed with bad luck this season.Selling Mane, great players (Diaz, Jota) out through injury, midfielders losing form. Hopefully, Klopp and Liverpool will resume their winning ways.

Sho PS: Playing against Brighton is not fun. Not fun at all. Proper proper team.

We (Liverpool) look vulnerable every time they attack. No doubting our effort but defensively we look decidedly nervous - again.

Naby Keita falls awkwardly after a challenge but signals he is okay to carry on. Meanwhile, Stefan Bajcetic has been booked for a late challenge. Some nervous moments for Liverpool after a bright start.

What a chance that was for Evan Ferguson. He had all the time in the world but didn't pick his spot.

It wasn't the best of finishes from three yards out.

Trent Alexander-Arnold got back on the line to clear it, that's happened at both ends now.

It has gone into a bit of a lull after a breathtakingly fast start to the match.

You can sense now they've sized each other up and it becomes a bit more tactical now.

  13. Postpublished at 14 mins

After a helter-skelter start with action in both boxes, the tie has calmed down in the last few moments. Liverpool are playing it across their own box as Brighton press.

Penny for the thoughts of Brighton fans and players on Caicedo's absence today. One of the biggest games of their season and he's unavailable because he's publicly declared he'd rather not honour an extremely lucrative contract. I'd stick him in the reserves for the rest of the year.

    Daniel

I hate to question Klopp - he's a massively successful, professional football manager - but why are we playing Elliott (a right-forward) and Gakpo (a left-forward) out of position to accommodate an underperforming Salah, who's played centrally before and done well there?

Screams from the home fans as Thiago manhandles Pascal Gross. Easy decision for referee David Coote. Free-kick to Brighton.

Harvey Elliott scored a wonder goal in the last round. He lines up a shot on the edge of the Brighton box but scuffs it. It's going wide but Jason Steele gets down to gather it nevertheless.

What a start to this match, it's electric.

You can see the confidence in this Brighton side but they were pegged back there by Liverpool.

Salah had two bites at the cherry and it was Dunk who cleared it off the line.

It's been a frantic start. Mo Salah is causing all sorts of problems already and wins his side's first corner. Cody Gakpo is also lively.

Liverpool just couldn't get started at Brighton two weeks ago but they go close to opening the scoring after a sweeping move involving Mo Salah. The hosts just about scramble it clear. The Reds look like they have revenge on their minds.

Bright start by Brighton. Tariq Lamptey is flying down the wing but Joe Gomez makes an important block. The Seagulls have the game's first corner but Alisson climbs well to collect.
