  3. 'There's always entertainment with Leeds'published at 19:24 Greenwich Mean Time 18 January 2023

The fans are getting a bit miffed with the run of results. Leeds are a good team to watch, in fact they are a great team to watch. I love going to watch Leeds, there is always excitement, there is always entertainment, they're always positive.

But they don't always win games of football and they don't always score enough goals. If they could do something about that tonight, lift some of the confidence around the group by getting a couple of goals, it can be taken as a positive thing.

The other thing about a cup game, it takes the pressure away from the league, if you're not having a good time in the league, you can take the shackles off a bit and go and enjoy it. They are playing against lower league opposition so it's a great opportunity for them to have fun.

  4. What should Leeds do in January?published at 19:20 Greenwich Mean Time 18 January 2023

    Leeds v Cardiff (19:45 GMT)

We asked for your opinions on what business Leeds need to do between now and the end of the January transfer window.

Here are some of your comments:

Scott: Go get Harry Maguire and Danny Ings on loan.

Sam: Leeds need an experienced left-back, a central midfielder who can link with the forwards and possibly an experienced centre-back. I cannot understand why we did not buy one of those that left Burnley when they were relegated?

Alan: It's been apparent all season we need a couple of experienced defenders. We needed them last year and if we're going to stay up this season and not rely on a last day result then the board/manager need to act soon! Some of the defending this season has been laughable.

Mark: Leeds should have bought Pukki from Norwich - a proven striker.

George: We need a centre-back. After our defensive performance at Aston Villa, It's obvious that we could use someone to strengthen our defence.

Ben: Our most important signing would be a new head coach. Jesse Marsch has been here 10 months and we’ve yet to record a single routine victory. Performances week to week are scatty and he’s not made any improvement in defence, something which Bielsa was lamented and ultimately sacked for. He’s been backed by the board with his players and failed.

Cardiff's only FA Cup win came all the way back in 1927, when a Hughie Ferguson goal gave them a 1-0 win over Arsenal. It has been pretty slim pickings since then, although they were runners-up as recently as 2008, beaten by a single goal from Portsmouth's Nwankwo Kanu. They've only gone beyond the fourth round twice since then.

It's only right that I also make mention of the third-round tie in 2001-02, when Cardiff beat Leeds 2-1 in the third round at Ninian Park. They almost did that again in the original tie this year until Sonny Perkins got involved.

The last time Leeds won the FA Cup, this fella lifted it...

Billy Bremner was captain of the 1972 side that beat Arsenal 1-0, thanks to Allan Clarke's diving header.

The Whites' track record in the competition this century is, frankly, appalling. One single quarter-final appearance is as good as it gets. They have been knocked out in the third round for the last five seasons on the bounce. That includes by Newport County and Crawley. They've also lost to Sutton and Histon in the not-too-distant past.

  6. Who do tonight's winners play?published at 19:16 Greenwich Mean Time 18 January 2023

    Leeds v Cardiff (19:45 GMT)

The short answer to that question is, we don't know yet.

Accrington Stanley's FA Cup third-round replay with Boreham Wood was postponed after an inspection deemed the surface "unplayable".

The pitch was reviewed by a Football Association-appointed referee, following recent freezing weather conditions at the Wham Stadium.

National League side Boreham Wood earned a replay with their League One opponents after a 1-1 home draw.

The replay has been rearranged for Tuesday, 24 January (19:45 GMT).

The winners will be at home to tonight's victors in round four.

  7. The FA what?published at 19:14 Greenwich Mean Time 18 January 2023

    Leeds v Cardiff (19:45 GMT)

    Phil Dawkes
    BBC Sport at Elland Road

You'd forgive some of the locals here if they need a bit of a refresher on what this FA Cup lark is all about, as this is Leeds' first home tie since January 2016! There have been 2,566 days between the 2-0 win over Rotherham in the third round in the 2015-16 season and this tonight.

And even then, they've only got this because of a replay. If they win this tie, guess what? Yep, they've been drawn away again - at Boreham Wood or Accrington.

Of course, Cardiff will have something to say about that. Their players have been out on the pitch having a look around and getting used to surroundings. Last time any of them were here they were 3-0 down after 52 minutes but drew 3-3, scoring their equaliser while with only 10 men. You'd snap someone's hand off for that kind of entertainment tonight. Well, maybe not the Leeds fans.

Mark Hudson's family have posted an emotional video on social media after he was sacked as Cardiff City manager.

Former captain Hudson, 40, was dismissed on Saturday after nine winless games, having been in charge for only 118 days.

Two personal videos show the excitement of his sons when he was appointed and the disappointment as he told them of his departure.

"Don't worry, that's football," he told them.

A message posted alongside the family-shot video said: "I've debated over whether to post this video or not, it's personal, it's raw, it's a high and a gutting low."

  9. What next for Cardiff?published at 19:10 Greenwich Mean Time 18 January 2023

    Leeds v Cardiff (19:45 GMT)

At Cardiff, few managers tend to last long.

The Bluebirds are now looking for a fifth manager in two years, following Mark Hudson (118 days), Steve Morison (11 months), Mick McCarthy (10 months) and Neil Harris, who left in January 2021 after 14 months at the helm.

Neil Warnock was the last Cardiff manager to serve for any significant length of time, having been at the helm between 2016 and 2019.

Warnock is now the bookies' favourite to return to south Wales, with Cardiff in a relegation dogfight in the Championship.

BBC Sport Wales has been assessing the Bluebirds' future.

Tonight, Leeds are going to say a proper goodbye to midfielder Mateusz Klich, one of their heroes of the promotion campaign under Marcelo Bielsa and their first few seasons back in the top-flight.

Klich did get something of a farewell at their last home game - the 2-2 draw with West Ham - but not the kind he or the fans would really have desired, with no announcement allowing the stands to empty before the Pole was given a guard of honour off the field.

He has since joined DC United in the MLS, but is here tonight and will be front and centre before kick-off as amends is made and the fans in attendance are given chance to pay proper tribute.

Klich is a big fan of street art and he will leave a permanent reminder behind of his time at Elland Road in the shape of this mural, which he painted after the club's promotion from the Championship.

    Almost done!

There are two FA Cup ties still to be decided in this third round. They just happen to be to work out two teams that will face each other in round four. I'm at Elland Road to see who one of them will be as Leeds host Cardiff.

It feels like a big night for Whites boss Jesse Marsch, who is starting to feel the bite of a fanbase dissatisfied with the progress their side is making. A loss (albeit after playing pretty well) at Villa on Friday night saw small renditions of chants calling for the American to be sacked. If he fails to win this tonight in front of what is expected to be a sell-out (and expectant) crowd you fear for him. Brentford at home on Sunday in the league feels make or break... if he even makes it that far!

As for Cardiff, they've binned off a manager since these two last met and will probably see this as some respite from a horrid run of league form. A victory tonight could be just the confidence-lifter they need to take into the Championship.

It is pretty quiet around me right now, but it's sure to get lively shortly. I've also got about 15 layers on because Leeds has had frost all over it today and this press box is going to be colder than the reception Leeds' boss gets if the home side mess up tonight!

Leeds have gone stronger in this replay than they did for the original tie.

Regular first-team players Illan Meslier (in goal), midfielders Tyler Adams and Marc Roca and forwards Jack Harrison and Rodrigo all start, unlike in Wales.

There is a full debut for January-signing Max Wober, who will play at centre-back.

Patrick Bamford is on the bench, along with a fit-again Luis Sinisterra and the man who ensured this replay with his late goal in the original tie, Sonny Perkins.

Cardiff retain the defence that started the original tie - including Joel Bagan, who was sent off - but make changes further forward.

Rubin Colwill comes into midfield, while Kion Etete and Mark Harris both start up front.

The likes of Callum O'Dowda, Perry Ng, Jaden Philogene and Callum Robinson are on the bench should they be required.

  15. Good eveningpublished at 19:00 Greenwich Mean Time 18 January 2023

    Leeds v Cardiff (19:45 GMT)

    Good evening,

Welcome to Elland Road for tonight's FA Cup third round replay between Premier League Leeds and Championship side Cardiff.

The Bluebirds might feel they have blown their best opportunity to advance to the FA Cup fourth round in the thrilling 2-2 draw in south Wales, but they are unburdened by expectation at Elland Road tonight.

Cardiff, frankly, have bigger problems than a no-pressure FA Cup tie, as we shall discuss in a minute.

It's surely a bigger night for Leeds and their manager Jesse Marsch, with the pressure growing on the Leeds boss with the local newspaper already speculating on his possible successor.

Leeds need a result tonight against a club with no manager and no expectations this evening.

Let's have a look at those teams, shall we?
