Marcus Rashford's sensational scoring streak continued at the City Ground as Manchester United closed in on an EFL Cup final appearance at Wembley next month with a three-goal victory over Nottingham Forest.

Rashford's brilliant solo effort gave United the advantage six minutes into the first leg of the semi-final.

Wout Weghorst added a second just before the break with his first goal for the club and Bruno Fernandes wrapped up the scoring a minute from time to provide Erik ten Hag's men with a healthy advantage for the return at Old Trafford in seven days' time as United look to end a trophy drought stretching back to 2017.

Rashford's goal took his tally to 10 in as many games since he returned from the World Cup, underlining his status as one of England's form players at present.

It was his fifth goal in this competition alone, putting him at the head of the leading scorer's list.

Weghorst has every reason to be pleased with himself too as he reacted quickest after Wayne Hennessey had saved Antony's low shot and turned home the rebound, while substitutes Facundo Pellistri and Anthony Elanga were both involved as Fernandes drove a low shot past Wayne Hennessey.

Ten Hag punching the air in celebration underlined the significance of that third goal.

Steve Cooper's hosts were adventurous in their approach but they would appear to have little chance of emulating Brian Clough's side by reaching the final, which Forest have not done since 1992.

  4. 'We can't be naive'published at 22:43 Greenwich Mean Time 25 January 2023

FT: Nottingham Forest 0-3 Manchester United

    Nottingham Forest

Nottingham Forest manager Steve Cooper speaking to Sky Sports: "Obviously disappointed in losing the game and the manner of the goals. It was always going to be tough but there were certain things we talked about in the build-up to not do and we fell short so got punished.

"We scored a goal that was marginally offside but it was a good move. We got into good positions and I felt like we were going to equalise but the timing of the goals were poor and self-inflicted so disappointed with that.

"We did get caught up a little bit in the first half with the game and maybe forgot about the two-legged aspect. We might have to accept in the latter stages that 2-0 is where we're at. We've lost that little opportunity so it makes it a harder one [at Old Trafford].

"You have to play the opponent for what they are and not be naive but we've put ourselves into this position and have to go again next week.

"You have to deal with the offsides. We accept that. It's marginal but maybe it shouldn't have been offside as there was enough space to get it right. We talked about no regrets before the game and I still think we could have committed more to it in terms of aggression and positivity. We need to deal with it and set objectives for the second leg.

"It was going to be tough anyway and it's three times as tough now but we will analyse the performance and get everything."

On Morgan Gibbs-White, who went off injured: "I've not seen him. We'll have to see over the next few days."

  8. 'We cannot let moments happen'published at 22:32 Greenwich Mean Time 25 January 2023

FT: Nottingham Forest 0-3 Manchester United

    Manchester United

Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag speaking to Sky Sports: "I'm happy with the performance and I think over 90 minutes we controlled it. There was one moment that could have changed the game and that is where we need to improve but overall we controlled it.

"They changed the system and we didn't anticipate that. It can't happen. That is still a moment where we have to learn and improve as a team if you want to be top. Those moments can't happen.

"I know it's what he is capable of. He has a really good goalscoring record. We created some more good chances. It was a real striker's goal.

"We almost let them come into the game and we can't allow an opponent to get back into the game when we started so good. We dictated it totally then in one moment it can change. We need to avoid that.

"I think in the second half we were much more composed and we tracked them. It was much better.

"We had already planned the substitute. Marcus Rashford did his job and scored another goal so we were in a good position.

"Yeah we have to play one game. We have to do the same, prepare and make a good game plan. The players have to be focused."

  11. 'It's always special to score'published at 22:18 Greenwich Mean Time 25 January 2023

FT: Nottingham Forest 0-3 Manchester United

    Manchester United

Manchester United forward Wout Weghorst speaking to Sky Sports: "A great night for us. A great result and of course after this first match, victory is a really good chance and to get to the final.

"It's always special and you want to score goals. You prefer to have this first one as quick as possible so I was really happy. I think it was an important moment also. It gave us a good feeling at the break.

"We started well and had a great goal. We didn't have the control like we wanted it and made it too much up and down after. We were lucky their goal was disallowed then to make it 2-0 before half-time was important.

"I just turned to the goal hoping for a rebound and it came exactly like this. It was nice.

"We were not happy with the way we had played in the first half, we wanted more control. That's something we did in the second half and with the 3-0 at the end it made it even better.

"It's a great result for us tonight, let's finish it next week."

FT: Nottingham Forest 0-3 Manchester United

    Manchester United

Manchester United centre-back Lisandro Martínez speaking to Sky Sports: "I'm really happy with the job from the guys. We played so good today and we controlled the game. We lost the last game so we had to produce now and as a team we did.

"We know [Forest] is doing a really good job but we never gave up. Today we won the game and that's the most important thing.

"You can see when we do the right things we don't concede goals. We controlled the game but we still have many things to improve on and we have to keep going.

"I'm really happy because we showed discipline and I saw [for] the whole game we were pretty focused. We have to play always like this, keep going and keep fighting.

"We know it's a good result for us but we have to take it step-by-step."

A lot of talk about how Casemiro has transformed Man Utd. But we really need to talk about how insanely good Eriksen is. Considering few very clubs wanted to go near a player with a medical issue. He is a different breed.

Ten Hag has changed the confidence and mentality of this group, they don't fear anyone and there is an aura now.

They were so dominant in that second half and even the youngsters off the bench are having an impact.

Credit must go to Ten Hag and, for me, they are in the final now.
