Babyboomer: Dear Anon, that is exactly what the rules of the competition are for, as opposed to the laws of the game. The semi finals are 2 legs but previous rounds aren't. The final is on a neutral ground but the previous rounds aren't. VAR is used in later rounds etc.

Celtic F1rst: I've no skin in this game, but the offside rule really needs looked at. I'm sure it was introduced initially to prevent players just hanging around the goal. With the introduction of VAR it's making miniscule infringements offside when no discernable advantage has been gained.

No changes at the break and we're back in action. It's already a massive task for Nottingham Forest.

  6. 'It will be disheartening'published at 20:56 Greenwich Mean Time 25 January 2023

HT: Nottingham Forest 0-2 Manchester United

    Wes Morgan
Former Leicester City defender on BBC One

It's the worst time to concede, 1-0 down thinking 'let's keep it tight until half time', but to concede then is a big blow.

I don't think Forest have done bad, especially on the transition.

It will be disheartening for them.

HT: Nottingham Forest 0-2 Manchester United

    Simon Stone
BBC Sport at the City Ground

The Manchester United fans began a very familiar chant after that second goal had gone in.

It would take a mighty effort from Nottingham Forest to overcome this but the scoreline is very harsh on Steve Cooper's side.

Only a quarter of the way through the contest obviously.

  8. 'He reacts quickest'published at 20:50 Greenwich Mean Time 25 January 2023

    Nottingham Forest 0-2 Manchester United

Former Republic of Ireland striker on BBC Radio 5 Live

Good play from Antony. It's saved by Hennessey but he puts it back into danger and credit to Weghorst for his finish.

He reacts quickest, McKenna can't get there fast enough.

  9. HALF-TIMEpublished at 20:49 Greenwich Mean Time 25 January 2023

    Nottingham Forest 0-2 Manchester United

Marcus Rashford scored the opener after only six minutes after a stunning run from inside his own half before Wout Weghorst made it 2-0, reacting quickest after Wayne Hennessey had saved Antony's shot just before half-time.

Nottingham Forest thought they had equalised and made it 1-1 through Sam Surridge, but a VAR check showed he was narrowly offside.

GOAL - Nottingham Forest 0-2 Manchester Unitedpublished at 45 mins

    Wout Weghorst

    His first goal for United!

Casemiro drives forward from the halfway line and he finds a pass to Antony.

Antony strikes low and hard at goal and Wayne Hennessey dives to his left and parries the ball, but Wout Weghorst reacts quickest to convert the rebound from six yards out.

That's five goals in four matches in this competition for Marcus Rashford this season after he also scored one versus Aston Villa, one against Burnley and two in the 3-0 win over Charlton in the quarter-final.

This lack of clinical nature will cost United. Forest were being mauled as United missed chance after chance and now Forest are growing into the game. United should be 3-0 up.

    Nathan

United fan and that VAR has worked in our favour but I don't agree with bringing it in for the last rounds. Either have it for the whole tournament, at the grounds where the technology is available or don't have it at all. You can't be changing the rules/laws midway through a tournament!

  15. Brilliant halfpublished at 37 mins

    Nottingham Forest 0-1 Manchester United

    Simon Stone
BBC Sport at the City Ground

This has been a superb half so far, with a brilliant goal, one disallowed, wasted opportunities and a couple of excellent saves.

It is a credit to Steve Cooper and Erik ten Hag that both sides are going for this.

  16. 'Unstoppable'published at 36 mins

    Nottingham Forest 0-1 Manchester United

United right-back Diogo Dalot, out of action through injury at the moment, loved seeing Marcus Rashford's goal, which is the difference so far.

    Nottingham Forest 0-1 Manchester United

    It's a good cup tie.

Manchester United always look a threat going forward but they also look vulnerable at the back.

  18. Postpublished at 35 mins

    Nottingham Forest 0-1 Manchester United

A chance for the visitors and we've got a great game going on at the moment.

Antony plays a give and go and gets through with only Wayne Hennessey to beat, but the Forest goalkeeper is off his line quickly to save with his legs.

Anon: Offside decisions like that frustrate the life out of me. Surely Surridge doesn't actually get an advantage from his knee being a hair's breadth ahead of the defender?

Greg Morter: Nottingham Forest after the setback of conceding early goal are giving it a good go

Andrew: We need a change to the offside rule to give the advantage back to the attacker. We didn't bring in VAR to rule out goals like that.

    Nottingham Forest 0-1 Manchester United

    Clinton Morrison
Former Republic of Ireland striker on BBC Radio 5 Live

Johnson is a star, he's outstanding. It's like something has clicked and he believes he can be a Premier League player.

He gets past Eriksen and then Martinez but he should be hitting the target.
