Casemiro & Varane starting for United will really be looking for a win at Barca, that rivalry is different, and even seeing Giroud really want that win for Milan against Spurs being a former Gunner.

It is fascinating down this right-hand side already. Raphinha will fancy himself tonight even though he has blown hot and cold for Barcelona this season.

At times he has looked unplayable and then in the same game looks like he has never kicked a ball before.

Robert Lewandowski may be 34 but this is the first time he has faced Manchester United. He's yet to get a chance to make his mark so far.

Interesting tactical selection by Erik ten Hag as Marcus Rashford starts at the top of the attack with Wout Weghorst in the number 10 role. That's probably caught Xavi by surprise.

Really sharp from Bruno Fernandes who makes a run behind Jordi Alba who isn't the most mobile of the Barcelona defenders.

He just needed someone to gamble and be alive, it is telling that Fred was the furthest forward.

Manchester United off to a fast start!

Bruno Fernandes is away down the right and he fires in a superb ball behind the defence but just out of Fred's reach.

What a start that would have been if Fred had made connection to score.

Casemiro being back in the side is a big boost. Also hoping Weghorst can show his worth tonight. A united win wouldn’t be a massive shock - they’ve come a long way since that 4 nil loss at Brentford.

This is a challenge that Manchester United should relish and thrive in. This season I have been impressed with how they have responded in games when they do suffer, they always have an opportunity with that front-four on the pitch.

Right, almost time for the first lot of European games to get under this evening.

As expected, it is a great atmosphere at the Nou Camp as the fans wait for the players to come out onto the pitch.

Erik ten Hag has said recently if Jadon Sancho is fit he plays and he is fit. If you look at the three behind Wout Weghorst that is clearly the best three to play there.

It looks like Araujo is going to play right-back that is clearly for Marcus Rashford as normally Joules Kounde would just cover across out there.

  17. 'Man United's vibe is back'published at 17:39 Greenwich Mean Time 16 February 2023

    Barcelona

FC Barcelona sporting director of football Jordi Cruyff speaking to BT Sport:

On the job Xavi is doing: "For us, I think it's been very difficult last years with a lot of changes. At the moment I think we have one of the youngest teams in the top countries in Europe and I think he's done a great job. He's an ideal person, knowing the club, knowing the expectation, knowing the environment and difficult in the start but we are on the right way for sure."

Young players coming through: "I think that's always something Barcelona has. Apart from the magnet to try and attract the big players, also the young players they come here and when they get on the pitch it's like every day, every game for them is like the maximum and they play with a special passion that we appreciate a lot. We are super happy with them."

Competing in the transfer market: "It's difficult for sure. Financially it's very difficult. Of course our Spanish fair play rules, which are the toughest in Europe at the moment, it makes it even more difficult. But we feel when we approach players in England and they hear the name of Barcelona and the eyes shine and the initial interest is there. Afterwards we never know if it's going to happen, but all the players they have a special feeling for Barcelona. We know this, that's the luck of the club."

On Manchester United's form: "They are just desperate to believe that it is possible to get back again. I think the squad has always had a lot of talent but you can see they are playing like a team. They are going in the right direction and in time we will see if it will result in trophies. But you can tell that the vibe is back again."

  18. 'I have good memories and bad memories'published at 17:38 Greenwich Mean Time 16 February 2023

    Barcelona

Barcelona manager Xavi's interview on BT Sport:

"[I have] good memories and bad memories [against Man Utd] because I played my first Champions League game in Old Trafford. It was an amazing story for me. And then we are disqualified for this group.

"And [I have] good memories also. Many games against United. It is a great club with, in my opinion, a very good coach. I think the club is coming back.

"We have a very good generation. Gavi and Pedri in no.6 and the no.8. It is early. but they can make good history in Barcelona.

"I want the ball. I suffer when my team don't have the ball. I want the ball all the time so this is the main aim as the team.

"I try to change the mentality. the club were in a bad moment , mentally. We are coming back.

"It was really difficult, really tough to play against [Owen] Hargreaves and [Paul] Scholes. Hargreaves he was very defensive, he was like Gavi. Paul Scholes, in my opinion, is one of the best midfielders in history, I like them a lot and they won a lot so I respect them a lot."

  19. Khedira to feature - no, not that one!published at 17:34 Greenwich Mean Time 16 February 2023

Ajax v Union Berlin (17:45 GMT)

When Union Berlin line up away to Ajax this evening, a familiar surname will be on their teamsheet. Rani Khedira, younger brother of Champions League and World Cup winner Sami, plies his trade in the German capital and has been a key man for Urs Fischer's side this term.

Like his older sibling, Rani anchors the midfield, and will have his work cut out against the likes of Mohamed Kudus and Dusan Tadic at the Johan Cruyff ArenA.

Sami never lost against Ajax during his playing career, winning four and drawing one. Will his brother experience similar success this evening?

Erik ten Hag: Man Utd boss on club heading in right direction for Champions League return

Erik ten Hag says Manchester United and Barcelona had to press "reset" after challenging periods for both clubs.

Barca dropped into the Europa League after finishing third in their Champions League group after a summer of wild transfers, despite financial uncertainty.

Manchester United, meanwhile, finished sixth in the Premier League last season to go straight into the Europa League.

However, Barcelona are now flying high at the top of La Liga while Manchester United are third in Premier League.

"Both clubs have the ambition to be in the Champions League," said United boss Ten Hag.

"But the reality is, we're in the Europa League and tells that both clubs needed a reset and I think we are both on a journey and we are both in the right direction."
