Barcelona need to not concede, they have conceded just seven goals in Spain but 20 goals in 12 games in Europe. If they can stop those European issues they have got a chance with Robert Lewandowski up front.

  2. 'I don't think Man Utd need De Jong'published at 19:55 Greenwich Mean Time 23 February 2023

    Peter Schmeichel

The Frenkie de Jong saga is still going on but I don't think we need him. If you look at where Manchester United need to improve it is not necessarily the midfield anymore.

If you look at Marcel Sabitzer - it may only be short-term - but he has filled in well for Casemiro when he wasn't available and they could make that permanent.

I made it around 30 players and coaches in the Manchester United half at one point during the warm-up.

The days of football being an 11 man game are long gone.

Erik ten Hag might need his substitutes at some point tonight.

He has 12 to choose from.

Speaking of strikers scoring goals, since the start of the 2019-20 season, Barcelona's Robert Lewandowski has scored 38 goals in 32 appearances in major European competition – more than any other player in this period.

    Absolute class.

To underline just how good a season he is having, Marcus Rashford has averaged a goal every 76 minutes for Manchester United in the Europa League this season (four goals in total) – the best ratio of any player to have played at least 300 minutes in the competition this term.

To think there were plenty of United fans who felt he was done at the club last season. You should have seen the negativity we had texted and tweeted to us about him every time the club played.

No-one who was there will ever forget Barcelona's first visit to Old Trafford in 1984.

Manchester United were trailing 2-0 from the first leg of their Cup Winners' Cup quarter-final at the Nou Camp.

But, against a Barca team containing Diego Maradona, United roared back, with Bryan Robson scoring twice in an incredible 3-0 win.

Robson was carried shoulder high off the pitch at the end.

The atmosphere is regarded as one of the best this stadium has ever known.

Robin van Persie, Paul Scholes and Owen Hargreaves are pitchside, offering punditry for BT Sport. The United fans are loving it, taking it turns to serenade them. Well, they're singing mainly for Scholes and Van Persie.

    Poor Owen.

Barcelona's off-field struggles are well documented. However, they've rediscovered their mojo on it under Xavi, who has led them to an eight-point lead at the top of La Liga.

They are currently unbeaten in 18 matches, with 16 of those being victories. They have also won each of their last 11 away games in all competitions.

There's a caveat, though. Bayern Munich and Inter Milan have both put shown that Barca are beatable on the road this season in Europe.

Man Utd v Barcelona (20:00 GMT)

Are Manchester United about to embark on a season-defining period? Quite possibly. Tonight's game is a big one but after that comes an FA Cup tie with West Ham at Old Trafford and then a trip to Liverpool in the Premier League. Wins in all three will set them up for a proper go at multiple trophies in the run in.

The Red Devils are unbeaten in 15 games at home - drawing just one of those - so they've certainly discovered how to make Old Trafford a fortress again.

However, both Real Sociedad and Atletico Madrid won at the Theatre of Dreams in 2022 so Barcelona have some fellow Spanish inspiration on which to draw this evening. That and the fact they gave Erik ten Hag's side a right old game in the first leg.

Well, that wasn't quite the dramatic tie we were hoping for over in France.

Don't worry, though, the potential for thrills and spills at Old Trafford is very high!

We're just over 15 minutes away from kick-off there. Enough time for you to get a drink sorted and settle in for the ride.

Man Utd v Barcelona (20:00 GMT)

    Guillem Balague
Spanish football journalist on BBC Radio 5 Live

Manchester United should be optimistic, they haven't had to make too many changes, they are playing the same way and got it. Rashford scared Barcelona a little bit all of that is in their favour.

Barcelona on the other hand have changed the back-four, they tried to stop Rashford last week and that didn't work. Now they want to build from the back and keep the ball. Good luck with that at Old Trafford.

Crazy challenge from Juan Cuadrado in the final minutes.

He absolutely flies in with two feet late on Mostafa Mohamed and the referee doesn't hesitate to whip out a yellow card.

What is he thinking? Lucky boy.

    Confusion in France!

Angel di Maria gets a head to a messy ball from Dusan Vlahovic, goal keeper Alban LaFont parries it away in the goal mouth and there's further confusion for Vlahovic, who makes a hash of the follow up.

But it doesn't matter, the referee points to his watch to say that Di Maria's header had crossed the line.

Frantic but Juve will take it!

I thought that was in to be honest.
