Derby are flying in League One, unbeaten in 13 games and making a real charge for automatic promotion.

The visit of West Ham, who are in a relegation fight in the Premier League, represents a good chance of an upset, but boss Paul Warne just wants his side to make memories.

“I appreciate Derby are a big club but the gulf between League One and the Premier League is pretty phenomenal,” he said. “I don’t go into it with a David-Goliath attitude. Obviously our league form has been good.

“I would like a positive result, but I’m not obsessed with it, we are not mid-table and need a cup run or anything like that.

“I just want a really good performance that the lads can have a good memory of. I’m not drawing on any David v Goliath games I’ve had in the past.

“A couple of my players have played in the Premier League so they know how elite it is.

“I don’t think we go into it with any expectation or pressure which, considering most games we play we are outright favourites, will be nice.”

So, Manchester United await the winners of tonight's tie.

A trip to Old Trafford is going to be tough but there is a glimmer of hope for whoever gets there.

Almost certainly, United will go into the game on the back of a Thursday night meeting with Barcelona and an EFL Cup final. Immediately afterwards is a trip to Liverpool.

Possibly, it won't be Erik ten Hag's strongest team for the FA Cup tie.

David Moyes admits Jarrod Bowen’s form suffered because he was in contention for a place in England’s World Cup squad.

West Ham winger Bowen, 26, won four caps last year but ultimately missed out on a spot in Qatar. He had not scored a goal since October until his timely double secured a 2-0 win over Everton last weekend.

“Last year, in the second half of the season he took over the goalscoring here and got us big goals, in Europe and in the league,” said Moyes.

“To get named in the England squad and probably having a big hope that he would make the squad to go to the World Cup, but he’s not performed well in the first half of the season and he’s got a lot more to go again.

“From the start of the season to November he probably didn’t perform well enough in those six to eight weeks. He didn’t get goals. If he’d got three or four goals he might have been the one going to the World Cup maybe more so than some others who popped in at the last minute.

“He was so disappointed with himself, gutted that he didn’t do that. I think it was hanging on him a little bit.

“So I’m hoping those goals have given him big confidence to go and show what he can do. He can score, he can create goals, he’s been a great buy for us and a really good team player.”

    • 'We are fortunate because we have got a good team'published at 19:37 Greenwich Mean Time 30 January 2023

Derby County v West Ham United (19:45 GMT)

Derby County are unbeaten in any competition since a 1-0 defeat at Ipswich Town in October and have won their last six ahead of the Hammers’ visit.

“All I have done is come across really positive people, all the letters and emails I receive are really positive,” said manager Paul Warne.

“But in fairness we could work hard as possible, do everything right and if the team don’t perform right we are not going to be popular.

“We are fortunate because we have got a good team, the lads have bought into what we want to do and we are winning games.

“I like to think the fans like what the team is doing and I’d like to think the fanbase and owners can see what we are trying to do.”

    • 'We want to build momentum'published at 19:36 Greenwich Mean Time 30 January 2023

Derby County v West Ham United (19:45 GMT)

      West Ham United

West Ham manager David Moyes on ITV: "It's a great club and we're looking forward to the game.

"Derby are on a really good run. We need to play well and go about the job the best way we can.

"We did well against Everton and need to follow that up. When you win it makes a big difference.

On making six changes: "When you've got a squad of players there are a lot of players that want games and you need to keep them happy.

"A lot have been champing at the bit so they get their chance.

"We want to build momentum. We have a lot of games coming up and we're involved in Europe too."

    • Warne on having to win over the Derby fanspublished at 19:33 Greenwich Mean Time 30 January 2023

Derby County v West Ham United (19:45 GMT)

Paul Warne accepts Derby fans might not have been “dancing a jig” when he was appointed as their new manager earlier this season.

Warne joined from Championship side Rotherham in September and was given the task of rebuilding the Rams after they nearly went out of business under their previous owner.

The 49-year-old says the Derby fanbase were perhaps hoping for a “sexier name” to replace Liam Rosenior having previously had the likes of Wayne Rooney and Frank Lampard in their dugout.

But Warne is proving exactly why owner David Clowes made him his only target as he has transformed the Rams and propelled them into the League One automatic promotion race with a 13-game unbeaten run.

"I haven’t read the fans think we are rubbish, but I'm well aware bigger clubs want bigger sexier names because that is what we have had,” Warne told the PA news agency.

“We have followed (Phillip) Cocu, Lampard, Rooney, Liam and then it is four lads from up the road. I can’t imagine all the fans were dancing a jig if I am being honest.

“Each club has a fanbase that has expectations. For us, we are relationship people and slow burners. If you want us to build the club from in to out we probably are the right people but we are not as sexy as other people."

Derby manager Paul Warne has used his programme notes to highlight what happened to the Rams 12 months ago.

"I know almost exactly a year ago the club was facing a very uncertain future," he said.

"What was clear during that time was the incredible support this club has and after coming through those tough moments, it is important we enjoy occasions like this."

David Moyes insists there is no chance of Michail Antonio leaving West Ham this month.

Antonio seems to be angling for a move having this week revealed on The Footballer’s Football Podcast that he has been in contact with other clubs.

The striker said: “Honestly, I’ve not ruled anything out. That’s all I can say, nothing has been ruled out. There are talks so whatever happens, happens.”

But Moyes, who lost new signing Danny Ings to an injury on his debut against Everton last weekend, has no intention of letting West Ham’s all-time top Premier League goalscorer leave.

“Well, it’s not the club talking about Micky Antonio, I think Micky is the one talking about it,” said the Hammers boss.

“Micky said it but we here have got no intention of doing anything. Sometimes players choose to do that, some of them want to go.

“But at the moment we want Mick here, we want him playing well, we want him scoring goals, and we’re happy to have him.”

"I have a photo of Dad by the side of my bed," says Max Bird. "He's in a Manchester United shirt and we're on holiday. At night, before I go to sleep, I talk to him."

On 24 February 2019, the Derby County midfielder lost his 45-year-old father to a combination of pneumonia and sepsis.

Eight hours after Andrew passed away, Bird captained the Rams to an 8-1 win over Bristol City , externalin an under-23 cup fixture at Loughborough University Stadium. He was 18 at the time.

"Dad would have been raging had I not played that day," Bird, 22, tells BBC Sport. "I needed to play football. It would have eaten away at me more had I missed the match."

As League One Derby prepare to host Premier League West Ham in the fourth round of the FA Cup, Bird opens up on how football has helped him cope with bereavement, grief and loss.

"At one stage Dad was doing well in hospital," he adds. "He was fighting and fighting for two weeks. Then there was a slow deterioration.

"I cannot put into words what it was like."

    • 'We want a result'published at 19:25 Greenwich Mean Time 30 January 2023

Derby County v West Ham United (19:45 GMT)

Derby manager Paul Warne on ITV: "It's good for the players, I'm very jealous not to be playing.

"I've been speaking about expectations and wanting to drive performances. We want a result to take us into the weekend.

"A year ago the fans were protesting in the streets and it's important we put on a show for them. I just showed a video to the lads about the marches because I know how important this is to the city.

"The club is in a healthy place and we're trying to push it in the right direction.

On the absence of striker David McGoldrick: "He has a sore knee. I've been led to believe he should be OK for the weekend."

There is no pressure on Derby. They are flying, they are looking to bounce straight back to the Championship and they are building some real momentum under Paul Warne.

This is one for David Moyes. He beat Everton last time out and absolutely needed to but this will blot his copybook if he loses to a League One side.
