  3. Rahm impressed by Bale after Torrey Pines Pro-Am roundpublished at 12:16 Greenwich Mean Time 25 January 2023

    Tom Mallows
    BBC Sport

He once celebrated in front of a banner that read' Wales. Golf. Madrid. In that order'.

But now he has called time on his professional football career, golf looks to be the undisputed number one for Gareth Bale - just ask world number three Jon Rahm.

The 2021 US Open champion played alongside the former Wales and Real Madrid forward in the Pro-Am before this week's Farmers Insurance Open on the PGA Tour.

It is fair to say the European Ryder Cup player was impressed by what he saw at Torrey Pines.

"I told Gareth, 'you can't be so good at professional football and golf at the same time, it just doesn't seem fair'," said the in-form Spaniard, who is seeking his third straight PGA Tour win this week.

"Can't be dedicated to one thing and have this much talent for golf, it's not fair in the slightest."

  11. No Everton approach for Allardycepublished at 11:34 Greenwich Mean Time 25 January 2023

    Simon Stone
    BBC Sport

Sam Allardyce is one of the names being mentioned as a potential candidate to take over as manager if the club can't get their preferred choice in until the end of the season.

Allardyce not only kept Everton up in 2017-18 but helped them finish eighth, and they have not finished higher since.

He wasn't particularly popular with the Everton supporters, though, and my understanding is there has been no contact between the former England boss and Everton owner Farhad Moshiri.

  13. 'Howe would be able to pick where he wants his statue'published at 11:22 Greenwich Mean Time 25 January 2023

    Southampton 0-1 Newcastle

    Lee Clark
Former Newcastle United midfielder on BBC Radio 5 Live

On potentially reaching the EFL Cup final: "It'd be a big one for the new ownership, Eddie Howe and his staff, and the new group of players to achieve. When the final comes around, I think it'll be about what 16 months since they've all come together. That would be a ridiculous turnaround from where they took over."

If Newcastle win their first domestic trophy since 1955: "Eddie would be picking his spot around St James' Park for where his statue goes. I think if he's got any sense he'd put it alongside the late great Sir Bobby Robson."

  16. 'I think most Geordies have already booked tickets to London'published at 10:57 Greenwich Mean Time 25 January 2023

    Southampton 0-1 Newcastle

    Lee Clark
Former Newcastle United midfielder on BBC Radio 5 Live

Obviously, I've been a player, coach and manager. With that hat on I'd be telling every Newcastle fan just to take it easy. We've still got another tough game against Southampton [in the second leg next Tuesday].

But when we beat Leicester in the quarter-final I went and booked my train ticket down to London and my hotel room for Wembley. I think most Geordies have already done the same.

We are supposed to play Brighton on the day of the final, or at least that weekend. If the unthinkable was to happen and we didn't get through to the final, you know, I think it'd be the lowest ever crowd at St James' Park because all the Geordies will be in London.
