  1. We know it's only half-time - Howepublished at 08:29 Greenwich Mean Time 25 January 2023

    Southampton 0-1 Newcastle

    Newcastle United

Newcastle manager Eddie Howe: "Both sides had their moments and had chances to win the game, but we know it's only half-time and there's a long way to go. It's been a good day but there's still a long way to go in the tie.

"I can't be critical in any way. We defended well, Nick made some big saves again. He's been outstanding for us this year, the defence has played very well in front of him but when called upon he's delivered for us.

"I'm pleased to win; that was our aim but we know 1-0 is delicate. Nothing is decided."

  2. 'Pope's magnificence drives Magpies towards final'published at 08:24 Greenwich Mean Time 25 January 2023

    Southampton 0-1 Newcastle

    Phil McNulty

Newcastle United's new era of riches under their Saudi Arabian owners has brought fresh ambition and big spending - but the £10m handed over to Burnley for Nick Pope looks like a snip.

Bigger money may have been spent elsewhere but few signings anywhere are giving better value for money than the 30-year-old England keeper and he proved more than his worth as Newcastle moved closer to the major trophy that has eluded them since 1969.

History weighs heavily on Newcastle and their fanatical support and it has been joined by huge expectation since Mike Ashley sold up. Now they will be firm favourites to reach the Carabao Cup final after Joelinton's second-half goal gave them a narrow semi-final first leg victory at Southampton.

Now back to Tuesday's action and the start of the EFL Cup semi-finals, with Newcastle gaining a first-leg advantage at Southampton.

Remarkably, Newcastle goalkeeper Nick Pope kept a 10th straight clean sheet in a row in all competitions - something no Premier League goalkeeper has done in at least a decade, according to Opta data.

Yes, the Magpies were knocked out of the FA Cup at Sheffield Wednesday earlier this month, but Martin Dubravka was in goal for that one.

  4. Chelsea contracts to lead to FFP rules change by Uefapublished at 08:13 Greenwich Mean Time 25 January 2023

    Simon Stone
    BBC Sport

Uefa is to change its Financial Fair Play rules in response to Chelsea's recent trend of signing players on long-term contracts.

Signing players on extended contracts enables Chelsea to spread the player's transfer fee over the life of that deal when submitting their annual accounts.

That means £89m signing Mykhailo Mudryk will be valued at £11m a year over his eight-and-a-half-year deal.

Uefa is to set a five-year limit over which a transfer fee can be spread.

Clubs will still be able to offer longer deals under UK regulations but will not be able to stretch transfer fees beyond the first five years.

The change to FFP rules will come into force during the summer and will not apply retrospectively.

  12. Chelsea and Newcastle keen on Gordonpublished at 07:19 Greenwich Mean Time 25 January 2023

    Phil McNulty and Simon Stone

ICYMI, we reported on Tuesday that Chelsea and Newcastle are keen on signing Everton forward Anthony Gordon before next Tuesday's transfer deadline.

Both clubs tried to sign the 21-year-old in the summer but neither could agree a fee with the Toffees.

However, there is a belief Everton may be more open to a sale this month in order to generate funds for Frank Lampard's replacement as manager, although it is unlikely either would pay the £60m Everton would ideally want.

The situation is complicated as it is not known how long it will take Everton to name a new manager.

  14. Magpies take first-leg advantage in EFL Cup semispublished at 07:07 Greenwich Mean Time 25 January 2023

    Southampton 0-1 Newcastle

    Phil McNulty
    BBC Sport chief football writer

Newcastle United hold a slender advantage from the Carabao Cup semi-final first leg as Joelinton's goal gave them victory at Southampton.

The Brazilian made amends for missing an earlier easy opportunity when he arrived on the end of substitute Alexander Isak's perfect low cross to make the decisive contribution with 17 minutes left.

Newcastle will now be favourites to reach their first major Wembley final since the FA Cup in 1999 as they attempt to end a trophy drought stretching back to the 1969 Inter-Cities Fairs Cup win.

And if Newcastle do complete the job in the second leg on Tyneside they will owe a debt of gratitude to Nick Pope, who made two vital second-half saves from Southampton substitute Che Adams with the score still goalless, extending his remarkable personal record to 10 successive clean sheets.

Southampton, who had what they thought was an equaliser from Adam Armstrong disallowed for handball by VAR, saw their night of frustration complete when defender Duje Caleta-Car was sent off in the closing minutes for a second yellow card.
