Bobo: A lot of disgruntled Arsenal fans missing the point on Jorginho - you need a technical player who can fit Mikel Arteta’s tactical system. Your whole success is built on players buying into that very system!

  2. Man Utd's loan thoughtspublished at 12:56 Greenwich Mean Time 31 January 2023

    Simon Stone
    BBC Sport

On Friday, Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag said the fact Facundo Pellistri had featured against Nottingham Forest in the EFL Cup was an indication about his short term plan for the Uruguayan.

Today he gave the impression Pellistri - and Anthony Elanga for that matter - could go out on loan.

It still feels unlikely. More obvious is the prospect of Brandon Williams moving away for the remainder of the season.

Sam: Joao Cancelo is arguably the best full back in the world. It’s a bizarre decision reminiscent of when Sir Alex Ferguson got rid of Jaap Stam. It was the only transfer he regretted and I think Pep will too.

I understand a lot of Premier League clubs have made approaches to take Chelsea midfielder Conor Gallagher on loan. A permanent deal for him to leave is looking unlikely. The England international would improve a lot of sides in the top flight and his stock is high after making the World Cup squad and his performances for Crystal Palace last season.

  5. 'We have to deal with Eriksen blow'published at 12:43 Greenwich Mean Time 31 January 2023

    Manchester United

Manchester United boss Erik ten Hag has been speaking about the news that Christian Eriksen will be out for months:

"Of course, he's disappointed, we are disappointed, but it happens in top football. You have to deal with it.

"We have players in the midfield department, good players and we have players who can fill the gap. I think you can never fill that gap because every player has his own characteristics, identification, another player will always fill in in a different way .

"But it doesn't mean you have to be less successful. It's quite clear Christian brings top quality to our squad and he has some specifics that are hard to replace, such as his impacts in the final third with his final ball."

Aaron: Nobody is bigger than the club. For all the criticism of Pep, he is a serial winner and if Cancelo wasn’t pulling his weight it’s simply not good enough. Pep demands commitment as a minimum. I have no sympathy for anyone that criticises Pep’s philosophy.

Norwich boss David Wagner has been speaking about signing Arsenal's young Brazilian winger Marquinhos on loan for the rest of the season.

The 19-year-old has been sent out by the Premier League leaders for experience.

"He is a young and exciting wide player, who wants to learn and further continue his development," says Wagner.

Marquinhos said: "I've learnt a lot as part of my adaptation here in England. It's totally different to Brazil. It's more intensive but I'm adapting well in order to help Norwich."

VC: Not a Man City fan but could potentially be great business. The young lad Rico Lewis looks a great prospect and potential 70m euros incoming in the summer for a 28-year-old full-back would be a very good fee.

Word out of France is that Southampton have beaten Everton to the signing of 20-year-old Rennes winger Kamaldeen Sulemana in a deal worth around £22.5m.

Would be a big coup for Saints in their relegation fight and a blow to Everton as they cast around having failed to make a signing in this window.

Journalist Duncan Castles is reporting that Nottingham Forest's move for Paris St-Germain goalkeeper Keylor Navas is in doubt.

Forest only want to pay a third of the 36-year-old's wages, and while PSG want to help Navas they don't want to be left paying the majority of his wages.

That is really bad news for Manchester United.

Christian Eriksen has been a superb performer for them this season and one of the chief reasons why they have improved so much.

To lose him for such an extended period of time is a major blow.

Dan: An exceptional player who completely redefined the full-back role in his time at Manchester City under Pep. As an Arsenal fan I'd be lying if I said I wasn't thrilled to see City weakened, but he's a loss for the Premier League (and my fantasy football team!).
