Liam: Poor man management from pep! Cancelo has contributed many goals/assists when City have needed it and this is the thanks he gets. Surely sour for Manchester City fans?

Nika: I’m shocked Man City let go of Cancelo, and most surprising is why didn’t the ever spending Chelsea sign him up, he’s a top player.

Former Manchester City midfielder Michael Brown is unsurprised by Joao Cancelo's move to Bayern Munich, as the Portugal full-back clearly wants to play football.

The 28-year-old has fallen out of favour under Pep Guardiola since the World Cup and is swapping sitting on a City bench for the German champions, initially on loan.

"He is one of these people who can't accept not playing," said Brown. "It's healthy at times to have players with a drive to play week in week out, as long as it's not counter-productive.

"I don't think City were in a rush to get him out on loan but if Pep decides someone is playing better or is tactically a better choice then he will do that.

"Some will accept it for a while, some will drive their way back in but Cancelo couldn't sit and be patient."

Brown pointed to previous examples of City players that have been dropped and have either worked their way back in or headed for the exit.

"This is the difficulty Pep has with world stars," he said. "There was the Leroy Sane situation but also look at Riyad Mahrez, who was missing games and wasn't confident but now has come back and is flying.

"The bulk of players in that squad who have started and starred will not want to sit games out."

Earlier today, Joao Cancelo left Manchester City to join Bayern Munich on an initial loan.

The lesson: don't mess with Pep Guardiola!

It's clearly a loss for City, though, regardless of the stance they have taken with the player, especially in the middle of a title race.

  5. Foxes nab a young strikerpublished at 14:46 Greenwich Mean Time 31 January 2023

Leicester are making moves on deadline day.

One that they have got over the line is striker Nathan Opoku, who has joined the club ahead of a loan move to OH Leuven.

The Ghanian striker has been recruited from Syracuse University.

    One for the future.

Pete: The fact that Jorginho is upgrading by moving from Chelsea to Arsenal feels strange. Going in that direction between the two clubs hasn't been a career improvement for nearly 20 years.

  8. Jorginho capture 'unbelievable' for Arsenalpublished at 14:35 Greenwich Mean Time 31 January 2023

Jorginho will be "an unbelievable signing" for Arsenal, says former Spurs and Leeds midfielder Michael Brown, even if the move caught him completely by surprise.

The Chelsea vice-captain is on the verge of a £12m move to the league leaders and Brown believes it'll be a smart acquisition by Gunners' boss Mikel Arteta.

"He'll fit in perfectly with Arsenal's philosophy," he said. "He is so cool and he comes having won the Champions League and the Euros, carrying all that success.

"In a team playing with confidence, he can be a wonderful signing."

Even though he believes Jorginho will hit the ground running at Emirates Stadium, Brown did wonder why Chelsea were so willing to let him go.

"The only thing that concerns me is that he can disappear when the going gets tough," he said. "How can he go from being such a great player in that team all the time to not being able to get a game? That does concern me slightly.

"But, for those Arsenal players, it will be exciting having Jorginho join and he will be a big lift to the dressing room."

  9. A record-breaking transfer windowpublished at 14:32 Greenwich Mean Time 31 January 2023

Transfermarkt's, external Stefan Bienkowski: "By Monday evening, the top-flight clubs in England had spent 583.06m euros on 42 new players, breaking the record for the most money paid by a single league in a single window. The Premier League broke its own record from the 2017/18 season when 561.4m euros was spent on new players.

"Among the top ten biggest spenders by transfer window, the Premier League occupies seven places. The league spent over 250m euros in 2021/22, 2019/20, 2016/17, 2015/16, and 2011/12. The only other league in the top five is the Chinese Super League, which spent 347.9m euros in 2016 and 403.5m euros in 2017. But in China, the winter window is far more important compared with the summer window in the big European leagues. As a result, the big investments during the boom years came in the winter.

"Also in the top ten is Spain’s La Liga. In 2017/18, the Spanish first division invested 288.7m euros in 62 new players. Philippe Coutinho was the most expensive transfer that winter. The Brazilian joined Barcelona from Liverpool for 135m euros."

Come on down to the joke of the Premier League. Everton have never been classed as a big team but it shows how much we are in trouble when bottom-of-the-table teams can make signings and all we get are knock backs. Dyche is a good manager but the poor guy has no chance with this kind of back room support.

Ian - long time very disgruntled Evertonian

Only Everton could be the club that needed reinforcements the most and end up weaker at the end of the window than they started with. Appalling mismanagement yet again.

Feels like midfielders are very much the position of the day.

Everyone seems to be on the hunt for a good one.

So what about Sander Berge, then? The Norwegian missed Sheffield United's FA Cup draw at Wrexham at the weekend, with word being that he was on his way elsewhere.

    But has that changed?

  13. Man Utd tight-lipped on Marcel Sabitzerpublished at 14:22 Greenwich Mean Time 31 January 2023

    Simon Stone
    BBC Sport

Two hours ago, Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag said it was very difficult to do deals on deadline day.

That is true. But it is not impossible.

United are staying tight-lipped on reported interest in Bayern Munich's Austria midfielder Marcel Sabitzer.

But it would make sense. In addition to Christian Eriksen's long-term injury, Ten Hag has also ruled Scott McTominay out of tomorrow's game against Nottingham Forest and the Premier League encounter with Crystal Palace on Saturday.

Can Ten Hag really go into the second half of the season with Casemiro and Fred as his only senior central midfield players?

Head over to the Manchester United page for more transfer updates.

Yeah, things are looking grim for Everton at the moment.

They have a Newcastle-provided £45m burning a hole in their pocket but seemingly nowhere to spend it.

All of their rivals down at the bottom are making moves and the very real risk is that they end up getting left behind in the battle against the drop.

On an attempted positive note for the Blues, we produced a piece on their news boss Sean Dyche and what he will bring to the club.
