"If the Arsenal deal has not gone through, they will be calling Chelsea about Jorginho. They could actually guarantee Jorginho that he would play. You can see him sitting alongside Casemiro.

"Why have they not gone in for him? He's available - but is it because he's different?"

On a move for Marcel Sabitzer: "They have to try to get someone but it's not that easy. It's Manchester United so they always have a little bit of money but how much have they left?

"You really want to sign someone that will make a difference but the players who are available are usually those that have not done as well as expected."

People have been waiting for Spurs to sign a right-back, with Pedro Porro lined up to join from Sporting Lisbon.

First, though, they have let one go, with Djed Spence leaving on loan to join Ligue 1 club Rennes.

The 22-year-old only joined Spurs in the Summer from Middlesbrough for £20m but has struggled to force his way into the side.

This deal surely wouldn't have happened if Spurs weren't confident that Porro wasn't happening, would it?

Head over to the Tottenham page for more transfer updates.

Penny for Potter's thoughts now - six months ago he was quietly going about his business well at Brighton. Now he's about to manage a team that may have had close to a £600m makeover in the same period. Hope he's got tips from his brother Harry to help manage the pressure...!

  5. Chelsea recruitment means 'too much choice' for Potterpublished at 17:14 Greenwich Mean Time 31 January 2023

Former Manchester City midfielder for BBC Sport

Chelsea may struggle with "too much choice", argues ex-Tottenham midfielder Michael Brown, as the Blues close in on a British record deal for Benfica's Enzo Fernandez.

The west London club have spent more than double any other team in Europe across the past two windows, albeit with huge fees for the likes of Mykhailo Mudryk being structured across lengthy contracts.

"They have got a lot of players now," Brown told BBC Sport. "In many ways, they have actually got too much choice.

"Graham Potter cannot say to a small group that they are now his side because there are so many options to change things if it is not going well. When that happens, it is really hard to get fluidity.

"It's a vicious circle. How do you keep everyone happy?"

Brown described Chelsea's recruitment under their new owners as "interesting", especially the desire to spread the payments.

"What if they do not make the Champions League for three years?" he said. "There will be all sorts of options written into the players' deals - and is it the player or the club that has the option to terminate it?

"The players will all be wondering if everyone has the same deal - or not."

  6. Canos joins Olympiakospublished at 17:10 Greenwich Mean Time 31 January 2023

Brentford's Sergi Canos has joined Olympiakos on loan for the remainder of the season.

The 25-year-old, who has scored 36 goals in 249 games for the Bees, has only made six appearances in all competitions this season.

Brentford director of football Phil Giles said there is still the possibility that Canos signs a new deal at the club.

He said: "We would like to wish Sergi all the best for the second half of the season. He has not played as many games this season as he would have liked, and this is a great opportunity for him.

"He has played an important role in our recent history and produced some very big performances in some very big games. He will always be the player who scored our first Premier League goal."

  7. How the WSL transfer window wentpublished at 17:07 Greenwich Mean Time 31 January 2023

    BBC Sport reporter

The WSL deadline for domestic transfers has now passed and the big news is that Alessia Russo remains a Manchester United player.

Arsenal's two world-record bids were turned away by Manchester United today and they held firm. Will she go for free in the summer when her contract expires? We'll have to see.

Liverpool had agreed a deal to sign Reading striker Natasha Dowie on loan and they were expected to get the paperwork signed on time.

Reading were also after a striker themselves but they might have to look overseas with a few hours still remaining before the international deadline closes.

West Ham got their striker - PSV's Amalie Thestrup on loan for the remainder of the season.

Arsenal have put in an offer for Lyon's Signe Bruun and will hope to persuade the French club to allow her to leave. That needs to be wrapped up before midnight.

Within the last few minutes, Olivia McLoughlin has joined Birmingham City on loan until the end of the season from Aston Villa.

Nathaniel Chalobah joins West Brom from Fulham

    West Bromwich Albion

    We got one!

OK, so it's not the biggest deal of the day by a long stretch, but beggars can't be choosers.

West Brom have been in the market for a midfielder, with Forest's Lewis O'Brien suggested. Instead, they have gone for Fulham's Nathaniel Chalobah, who joins on an 18-month deal.

The 28-year-old has made six appearances for Marco Silva’s side this season but has featured for only four minutes since he was sent off against Newcastle on 1 October.

  9. 'Jorginho is very underrated'published at 16:55 Greenwich Mean Time 31 January 2023

    BBC Radio 5 Live

The Evening Standard’s Chelsea correspondent Nizaar Kinsella speaking to BBC Radio 5 Live on Jorginho joining Arsenal:

"I think Jorginho is very underrated. Chelsea still have a huge squad so they will find players to plug that gap, they have 30 players on their books at the minute. Jorginho is the vice captain, the penalty taker, a leader.

"Arsenal are getting a good deal there for £12million. Chelsea had the option that his contract is running out so they either lose him for free at the end of the season or get £12million in for him and I think they have just leaned towards the latter because Graham Potter isn't picking him that much so they brought the money in."

  11. 'Chelsea want the Fernandez deal to happen'published at 16:42 Greenwich Mean Time 31 January 2023

    BBC Radio 5 Live

The Evening Standard’s Chelsea correspondent Nizaar Kinsella speaking to BBC Radio 5 Live on the Enzo Fernandez deal:

"Chelsea are still in negotiations, they've had several meetings today, also through the night last night to try and get this done. They did try earlier in the January transfer window but the talks stalled so they are back at it, they want it to happen. This is the one they have always wanted.

"This would complete the rebuilding project under the new owners so they are trying to get it done. They are talking and then the medical will be done in Portugal because time really is running out now. We're into the last knockings of it all."

  12. Sabitzer in Man Utd talkspublished at 16:39 Greenwich Mean Time 31 January 2023

    Simon Stone
    BBC Sport

Manchester United are in talks with Bayern Munich over a loan deal for Marcel Sabitzer.

The Austria midfielder is available during the current transfer window and following news of Christian Eriksen’s long-term injury and a short-term problem for Scott McTominay, United are exploring the prospect of a loan move.

Speaking at his press conference this lunchtime, manager Erik ten Hag said it was ‘difficult’ to do any deals on deadline day.

However, Ten Hag is well known at Bayern following his spell as second-team coach at the club and that relationship will help speed up the process.

Without Eriksen, who has been ruled out until the end of April with an ankle injury, and McTominay, Ten Hag has only two fit central midfielders for the forthcoming games against Nottingham Forest and Crystal Palace over the next week.

Seventeen-year-old Kobbie Mainoo is highly thought of at United but it is unlikely he would be risked at first-team level on a regular basis. Zidane Iqbal, 19, also plays in midfield but the Iraq international is yet to make a senior appearance this season.

Under the circumstances, a move for Sabitzer makes complete sense for United, who remain in all four competitions and hold a 3-0 lead from the first leg heading into the deciding game of their EFL Cup semi-final with Nottingham Forest at Old Trafford tomorrow.

  13. 'Everton are in a perilous position again'published at 16:36 Greenwich Mean Time 31 January 2023

    Ian Dennis
BBC Radio 5 Live senior football reporter

At this stage, it doesn't look like anybody is coming in at Everton. I know that even before Sean Dyche was finally appointed, representatives on his behalf were looking to try and do deals for Everton.

It's a very frustrating time for Evertonians. They had been linked with [Kamaldeen] Sulemana from Rennes, who is a Ghanaian winger, but it looks like he is going to Southampton in a four-and-a-half year deal for £22million.

The most frustrating thing for Everton supporters is that they haven't learnt the lessons from previous seasons. They were in this situation exactly a year ago and it is repeating itself all over again. They flirted with relegation and got out against Crystal Palace on the penultimate day of last season. They are in a perilous position once gain. It's difficult for Sean Dyche as a new manager because he will give them a fighting chance of staying up but he's not a magician.

They need resources. They have sold Antony Gordon for £42million and the Everton fans would have hoped that somebody within the hierarchy, even before Sean Dyche had arrived would have had somebody in mind to try and strengthen. Everton will see teams around them - Southampton, Bournemouth and Leicester - strengthening and bringing in reinforcements. Everton are not.

Duncan Watmore, once billed as a wonderkid in his early days at Sunderland, has joined Millwall from Middlesbrough.

He has five goals in 21 Championship appearances this season.

We are still waiting for a green light for a Chelsea deal for Benfica's Argentina midfielder Enzo Fernandez

There's still no agreement between the two clubs. I am led to believe it is how the payments are structured over a period of time but the longer it goes on naturally it makes it more harder for the paperwork to be processed in time.

Those big-money deals are still cooking away, meaning we could have a flurry of announcements on the likes of Enzo Fernandez, Marcel Sabitzer, Jorginho, Pedro Porro and more in the next few hours.
