Probably the most boring window as a Villa fan. So many players linked with little joy. Oh well, suppose I better do some work.

    Neil

Newcastle need a midfielder signed asap, we have four active midfielders at our club and we regularly play three of them. With Shelvey going someone has to come in, we needed a midfielder before he left this worsens our case.

A Spurs full-back joining Atletico? There's a solid precedent, to be fair.

Jorginho is a good addition as a squad player. Behind Partey and Xhaka. Massive improvement on Lokonga and the injured Elneny but still not overly excited

  5. 'I try to give the players the big picture'published at 15:41 Greenwich Mean Time 31 January 2023

    BBC World Service

More from CM 01/02 legend and, more importantly in this instance, FA Licensed Intermediary Cherno Samba on why he became a football agent...

"The reason I came into the agency world was to protect players just like I wasn't protected at times when I was playing in my own career (he played for the likes of Plymouth and Wrexham but retired in 2015). It's always been about the players, the players, the players for me.

"You have to run the race with them and look at what's best for them, their pathway, where they'd fit in, where they'll be playing and things like that. You can get some agents all they think about is themselves but for me it's all about running the race with the players.

"Football is a very short career and sometimes players make wrong decisions so I try to give them all the pros and cons of a move, trying to give them the big picture.

"It doesn't help when they have other people around thinking of their own interests instead of the player.

"I don't blame the clubs because they have to look out for their own interests so you just have to be respectful, know what you're doing and know that it's a business where as long as you do it respectfully and the right way, everybody wins. I always make sure that things that happened to me don't happen to the next generation of players."

I would take ANYBODY right now- we need two bodies in midfield. Heck I'd even take Artur Melo or Jonjo Shelvey at this point. Season in danger if derailing as there is no cover for Eriksen nor for Bruno.

  9. What do Newcastle need on deadline day?published at 15:28 Greenwich Mean Time 31 January 2023

Mehzeb: While Anthony Gordon and Harrison Ashby are decent deals, the former a bit overpriced to be honest, what most Newcastle fans wanted was the signing of James Maddison. Make it happen, chiefs.

Dave: Maddison would be perfect to help us progress further. Would give us a massive help towards Champions League qualification and EFL Cup achievements. Clearly a willingness from both parties. Managing to convince Leicester to let go in January will be tricky.

Martin: They still need another central striker, Wilson and Isak have both had fitness issues and an additional striker might be crucial if top four is to become a reality.

Graham: We need Maddison as playmaker and an additional striker. A couple of injuries could derail our potential great season. Big clubs don't shy away from correct spending. We need this to increase our small squad to cover remaining challenges to come this season.

Paul: I think Newcastle really need a goalscoring forward, as cover for Isak and Wilson. An aggressive midfield player would also help.

  11. Chelsea set to smash British record?published at 15:23 Greenwich Mean Time 31 January 2023

Enzo Fernandez in action for BenficaImage source, Getty Images

    We're still waiting...

Benfica's World Cup winner Enzo Fernandez looks set to be on his way to Chelsea for a British record fee of 120m euros (£105.6m).

If the deal goes through ahead of the deadline, it would eclipse the £100m that Manchester City handed over to sign Jack Grealish from Aston Villa in 2021.

Fernandez featured in all seven of Argentina's games at the World Cup in Qatar, playing the full 120 minutes in the final, and he was named young player of the tournament.

  12. All quiet on Harrisonpublished at 15:20 Greenwich Mean Time 31 January 2023

It all seems to have gone quiet on Jack Harrison's reported move to Leicester.

The latest we heard was that the Foxes had seen a bid for the player turned down but no news on whether they have been back to Leeds with another bid? Or whether the Whites have any intention of dealing?

Forward Harrison has 18 months left on his current deal at Elland Road.

  16. 'This is Guardiola flexing his muscles'published at 15:12 Greenwich Mean Time 31 January 2023

Joao Cancelo to Bayern Munich from Man City is one of the more surprising developments at the end of this transfer window.

There is context to the move, though.

If you want to dive headlong into that and try to understand why Pep Guardiola has just sold off one of your big fantasy football assets, you can do so here.

The piece includes this chat from Chris Sutton on BBC Radio 5 Live: "I am shocked about Joao Cancelo because Oleksandr Zinchenko was sold and the lack of options that Pep Guardiola has in those full-back areas," said Sutton.

"From the outside it looks like some sort of altercation or bust-up because why would Pep Guardiola risk that?

"It just seems to me that this is Pep Guardiola flexing his muscles. It looks like there has been some sort of fallout.

"At this moment in time Manchester City fans will be thinking 'blimey, we've got a lot to do in the Premier League because Arsenal are absolutely flying'. They would consider Cancelo still as their best full-back so this is a real surprise."

  17. Chalobah to West Brompublished at 15:08 Greenwich Mean Time 31 January 2023

    Simon Stone
    BBC Sport

West Brom are closing in on the signing of Fulham midfielder Nathaniel Chalobah.

The Baggies were interested in Nottingham Forest’s Lewis O’Brien but were put off by a £10m obligation to buy clause.

Carlos Corberan made strengthening his midfield a priority during the current window.

Chalobah began his career at Chelsea since when the 28-year-old has had stints with Watford and Fulham.

He has made six appearances for Marco Silva’s side this season but has featured for only four minutes since he was sent off against Newcastle on 1 October.

Hibernian have had a five-figure bid turned down for Swindon Town and Wales midfielder Jonny Williams, according to The Scotsman., external

The 29-year-old, capped 33 times by his country, is also the subject of interest in England, the paper adds.

I can't see Jonny Williams without thinking of him in the Sunderland 'Til I Die documentary. Seems a very good lad.
