That's it from Kenilworth Road, where Luton Town are celebrating having won a league game on their own patch for just the fourth time this season.

The Hatters may have wondered what would come next after Nathan Jones left for Southampton, but Rob Edwards is doing just fine with the Hatters having been jettisoned by Watford early in the season.

Cardiff, who have sacked two managers already in this campaign, must hope Sabri Lamouchi can begin making a mark when the Bluebirds travel to Hull this weekend.

With 17 league games to play, Cardiff are in serious relegation danger.

Luton, by contrast, are well-placed in the race for a play-off spot.

There will be elements of the performance tonight Sabri Lamouchi will be pleased with, that he can work with moving forward.

A disappointing result for Cardiff because I think on the whole they defended well, Mark McGuinness in particular, a man-of-the-match performance for me.

There were some positives in Cardiff's play, some good counter-attacks.

No creativity, no imagination, the passing wasn't great, the tempo wasn't great.

    Cardiff are in trouble.

  5. Luton looking up, Cardiff concernedpublished at 21:44 Greenwich Mean Time 31 January 2023

FT: Luton Town 1-0 Cardiff City

Luton are up to 45 points, behind third-placed Middlesbrough on goal difference alone - though they are 12 points adrift of Sheffield United in the second automatic promotion spot.

Cardiff, meantime, remain 21st and three points above the relegation zone - though they have now played two more games than the two sides immediately below them.

These are worrying times for the Bluebirds, while Luton are looking up.

Luton triumph and climb to fourth in the Championship thanks to Elijah Adebayo's late header.

There are ugly scenes after the final whistle, with Carlton Morris and Mark McGuinness booked.

The mood had been simmering in the closing stages, with Adebayo seeming to say something to Perry Ng after scoring what proved the decisive goal.

I have to say, apart from one cross Cardiff have dealt with everything.

It's what Luton Town do, they keep plugging away, doing the same things, they keep asking questions of you defensively.

Cardiff come forward but a cross sails into the stands.

    Luton are almost there.

We are into added time. Cardiff are throwing bodies forward but it is comfortable for Luton for the moment.

It's been too easy for Luton players to cross and pick a player out but I must say Cardiff's defending had been excellent until the goal.

Elijah Adebayo has scored in five straight Luton games and Cardiff must now try to muster a response.

They had looked like claiming a precious point.

    Elijah Adebayo

It's heartbreak for Cardiff and joy for Luton, who have finally found a path to goal.

Alfie Doughty's deflected cross reaches Elijah Adebayo and he makes no mistake with a close-range header.

    Ryan Allsop has no chance.

Luton just look like they're there for the taking. If Cardiff can put an attacking move together and show a bit of clinical edge.

I just don't see this Luton team scoring a goal.

The home side are the ones pressing since Ryan Wintle's chance, all the play has been in Cardiff's half.

Fred Onyedinma is causing all sorts of problems.

He's a magnet, Mark McGuinness. He just puts himself in the middle of the six-yard box says 'I'm going to head this away'.. He's done it on a number of occasions.

Luton threaten once more as Amari'i Bell does well on the left and crosses towards Elijah Adebayo, but his side-foot effort is blocked.

The Hatters are asking questions again now.

I think it's time for Rubin Colwill to start performing consistently for Cardiff. That's what's missing - he needs to play with his head up, to open the defence up, more creativity in the middle of the park.
