Well, it just goes to show why we all love football, doesn't it?

It's never predictable. West Brom have been flying in the Championship but they were brought to a screeching halt by a Birmingham side who have completed a first double over their neighbours since 1998-99.

A fine start to another thrilling weekend of EFL action, highlighted by a wonderful display from Blues midfielder Hannibal Mejbri.

"I'm so proud of the group of players. It was a really difficult day with all of the protests, that kind of stuff going on - and I think it showed the character of the group, we have a special group in there.

"We were favourites for relegation at the start of the season - a lot of loan players, lots of young players, old players - but we have a group that are very honest and want to play for the football club and more importantly want to fight and scrap for each other."

Birmingham City

Birmingham goalscorer Krystian Bielik to Sky Sports:

"It’s been a while since I scored so I enjoyed it very much. I‘m always grateful to help the team. We controlled the game. We knew West Brom are in a good run and are a very strong but we did well.

"Two games ago we were in a really tough place and we had to stick together. We knew we had to dig it out – we dug in and everyone gave more than 100% today and we deserved three points today.

"We are doing our job every day, every single game is so important to us and we know the fans are behind us."

Birmingham will have profiled West Brom and you look for little weaknesses or signs and they may have spotted that David Button stands off his line or overcompensates one side.

It certainly looked like Blues had worked on that. The free-kick was well-executed.

He also came for the corner and even if he stays on his line I don't think he saves it.

David Button has not had a good night at all. He looks low on confidence and Blues have played on that and it's worked for them.

Birmingham City

Birmingham's on-loan Manchester United midfielder Hannibal Mejbri to Sky Sports:

"It was a great game, a good derby and I had the chance to score and I'm very happy. The atmosphere was really nice and I enjoyed the moment.

"No message [from the bench about the free-kick], the only message was in my head, I saw the keeper was a bit too high so I acted like I was going to cross.

"We are a big family, when someone needs help, you are always there. When it was hard, we stick together and when it's good we all enjoy it together."

Time for a bit of reaction from a couple of victorious Birmingham players then...

But a cracking evening for Birmingham as John Eustace's men climb two places to 16th with a fully-deserved victory.

They are 10 points above the bottom three - and on this display it's difficult to see them being dragged into bother.

Not a good night for West Brom then.

They had the chance to really cement the play-off spot that they had worked so hard to obtain.

But it's likely they will end the weekend outside the top six - given four teams below them has the opportunity to leapfrog the Baggies.

Birmingham started the better, showed more determinatation, got into Albion, closed them down.

Albion never really created a chance at all.

They need to get this defeat out of their system as soon as possible.

You have to give Birmingham credit for the way they defended but Carlos Corberan won't be happy with this performance.

After last week's comeback win over Swansea it was important Blues backed that up and I thought it was a top-drawer performance in a derby game.

Formbook turned upside down.

Birmingham, one win in six, comfortable victors over a West Brom side that had won 10 of their past 12.

The Baggies barely had a sniff as Blues snuffed them out, with Hannibal Mejbri, on loan from Manchester United, their standout player.

He scored the opener, a cheeky free-kick, having spotted David Button badly positioned, and then his corner provided the second as Krystian Bielik headed home to seal the points early in the second half.

Jayson Molumby is booked for dissent as he complains to the referee, who had awarded Birmingham a free-kick for Nathaniel Chalobah's push on Tahith Chong.

The game is won in truth - Birmingham will just want to make sure they keep a clean sheet now to go with it.

Jed Wallace booked for swiping the legs of Troy Deeney as he shepherds the ball out for a goal-kick.

Frustration city for the visitors.

Deeney probably lucky to escape one a few seconds later as he hauls Darnell Furlong towards an advertising hoarding.

Five minutes on the board.

The Baggies win a corner. But Blues clear.

With 20 seconds left of normal time, Albion win a free-kick in the centre circle.

Got to get it forward quickly now, surely. No, they are still trying to play their way through.

Tahith Chong lets out a celebratory roar as a tackle on Jed Wallace bounces out for a goal-kick rather than a corner because it touched the West Brom man last.

These two substitutes are both vastly experienced. It's all about managing the game.
