Lukas Jutkiewicz is bullying the Baggies back-line.

He wins a header and knocks it down for Tahith Chong, who lashes over from just inside the area.

Birmingham are flying here. Fully deserving of their lead.

That's a terrible goal from Albion's point of view. Button was far too close to his right post. His positioning was so bad.

You can see Hannibal had that in his mind straight away. He looked at Button's position and he struck it so, so well.

    Hannibal Mejbri (10 mins)

Hannibal Mejbri as bright as a button. David Button, not so much.

Blues' Manchester United loanee with a wonderful piece of vision as, standing over a free-kick between 25-30 yards out on the right hand side, he notices Baggies keeper Button very much to the far side of his goal.

Instead of a cross, he whips it in to the near post low and it beats Button despite his despairing dive.

Has to go down as poor positioning from the keeper.

    Birmingham 0-0 West Brom

It's been all Blues here and Lukas Jutkiewicz nods a far-post cross back into the danger area but Albion clear.

Very bright start from the hosts.

    Birmingham 0-0 West Brom

Hannibal Mejbri tries to loft a ball over the Albion defence for Scott Hogan but Dara O'Shea just gets his head to it to avert the danger.

Juninho Bacuna took a whack to the back of the head in the build-up but he's OK.

Albion are under pressure from these high balls in the early stages.

If Trusty had headed that down I think he might have had a good chance of scoring.

    Birmingham 0-0 West Brom

Birmingham win a free-kick in their own half and it's launched forward. Beautiful turn on the edge of the box from Juninho Bacuna, reminiscent of his namesake (Juninho, not Leandro Bacuna).

Darnell Furlong heads the danger clear for a corner that is powered into the far post but Auston Trusty cannot rise quite high enough and heads it over.

Blues on the front foot straight away as Maxime Colin whips in a cross from the right but Lukas Jutkiewicz is penalised for climbing on the back of Darnell Furlong.

Right then, as a Black Country boy who now lives in Birmingham, I'm looking forward to this one, could be a cracker if it's anything like the 3-2 Blues win at The Hawthorns earlier this season.

It better be, anyway. I'm missing Death In Paradise for this. No sending spoilers on the Get Involveds.

It's very hard to predict these games. You want them to be exciting, end-to-end, but they often start cagey, with both teams feeling each other out and it's very competitive.

The surface will be a bit bouncy, the ball won't really roll true, there will be a lot of direct play and it will be which team can get to control it better.

I'm looking forward to a really competitive game.

It's going to be fierce early on and then it will calm down. Local derbies are cagey games and so unpredictable.

But you can guarantee both managers will be demanding plenty of energy.

That victory at Swansea was a vital one for Birmingham, handing them a bit of breathing space from the bottom three.

Blues are seven points clear of trouble - and have a decent goal difference too - but would love to stretch that gap a bit further tonight.

Birmingham City go into tonight's game in more vibrant mood after their 4-3 comeback win with those two headed goals from Lukas Jutkiewicz in the 90th minute and then Auston Trusty in the 97th at Swansea last week.

Other than their FA Cup win at Forest Green, it was Blues' first victory since Christmas, having lost five straight Championship games following the 3-2 Friday night win against Reading on 16 December.

"Obviously we had a difficult January," Blues boss John Eustace told BBC Radio WM. "But, in a funny way it's made the group stronger and more committed. Everyone's ready to fight and scrap."

Blues' players certainly showed that fighting spirit, as have their often fed-up but faithful fans, who remain a noisy presence at all away matches, despite once again occupying such a lowly place in the Championship table.

But they are again planning to show their displeasure with the club's board on home soil tonight, with another protest. After a near year-long series of media reports flagging up a potential change of ownership, but still no new owners, they will be urging for more immediate action.

The club remains under an EFL investigation both into the current owners, China-based Birmingham Sports Holdings Limited, as well as last summer's proposed bid from Paul Richardson and ex-Barcelona striker Maxi Lopez, which went a certain way down the line to being completed - but never happened. But the club said last month that there was now interest again.

    • Birmingham ended a five-game losing league run with a 4-3 victory over Swansea last time out. Blues last won consecutive games back in October.
    • West Brom are the first side in the top four tiers to play three consecutive league games on Fridays since Millwall in December 2014.
    • Lukas Jutkiewicz has scored in each of his last two league appearances for Birmingham, both as a sub. All three of his Championship goals this season have come as a substitute, the first Blues player to net three such goals in a league season since Federico Macheda in 2013-14 (six).

  20. Baggies' smooth change of keeperspublished at 19:44 Greenwich Mean Time 10 February 2023

Birmingham v West Brom (20:00 GMT)

    Ged Scott
    BBC Sport at St Andrew's

After two straight defeats, Albion were a little on the backfoot going into last Friday’s home date with Coventry. Especially when it was made public less than an hour before kick-off that the Baggies would be without goalkeeper Alex Palmer, Carlos Corberan’s first choice since he arrived in October.

Palmer felt something ‘”in his knee and ankle” as the Albion players warmed up for training the day before – and scans showed up a ligament injury which will keep him out for six weeks.

That ended an impressive unbroken run of 17 league games for Palmer since coming in at Preston in early October - Steve Bruce's penultimate game in charge – in response to Button’s nervous performances in two successive 3-2 home defeats, the first of them by tonight’s hosts.

Button enjoyed three clean sheets – and three wins - in five games when he first got an extended run in the knowledge that England's Sam Johnstone was set to leave.

His confidence had dipped prior to being left out and he had made just three appearances since, all in the FA Cup – and he was in net for the preceding 3-0 fourth-round spanking at Ashton Gate.

But, although he was given a quiet night by a low-key Cov attack, he did have one big save to make from the visitors’ main danger man Viktor Gyokeres – and kept his head in a late kerfuffle when the hosts gave away a last-minute free-kick.

So much so that he was given a proper hero’s reception from his team-mates which lasted until he got back to the home dressing room, something that was picked up on social media.
