Any Manchester United fan of a certain vintage will remember fondly Mark Hughes scoring from an impossible angle to set up a 2-1 victory over Barcelona to win the 1991 Cup Winners' Cup final in Rotterdam.

It was a landmark moment for Sir Alex Ferguson's team, following up on their 1990 FA Cup win against Crystal Palace, which provided the platform for everything else that was to come.

The two clubs have met plenty of times since then, on an even bigger stage.

Ahead of tonight's Europa League knockout play-off, Michael Beardmore has produced an excellent, nostalgic piece looking back at some of those classic encounters.

You can read the full piece here and we will be focussing on some of those matches as we build up to tonight's tie.

  5. Conte wanted to help teampublished at 10:51 Greenwich Mean Time 16 February 2023

Spurs boss Antonio Conte had returned to the touchline at Leicester last weekend and was present again for Tuesday's 1-0 defeat at AC Milan.

He spoke to media before the loss in Milan and admitted to rushing back from gallbladder surgery to help the team:

"I'm not still 100% but I think I'm recovering well. It's very important for me to stay with the team, work with them and try to stay together in a difficult moment for us," he said.

Twenty one shots, eight on target, no goals and another defeat.

It was a familiar story for Chelsea on Wednesday as they showed a lack of a cutting edge in the final third on their way to defeat by Borussia Dortmund in Germany.

The Blues had enough chances to win the first leg of their Champions League last-16 tie - and win it comfortably - but poor finishing, great saves and the woodwork conspired against them.

There has, understandably, been plenty of scrutiny focused on Graham Potter since he became Chelsea boss in September, but even his biggest critics must sympathise with him after this loss.

Karim Adeyemi scored a brilliant solo goal to condemn Chelsea to defeat in their Champions League last-16 first-leg tie at Borussia Dortmund.

The Premier League side rued missed chances as Joao Felix shot over from a good position and then hit the crossbar in the first half.

Reece James also forced two fine saves out of Dortmund goalkeeper Gregor Kobel in the second half as the visitors grew in confidence against the hosts, who were themselves struggling to create many chances.

But Chelsea were undone on the counter midway through the second period when Adeyemi broke from inside his own half following a Chelsea corner, knocked the ball past Kepa Arrizabalaga before slotting into the empty net.

During our morning look at today's newspapers, I mentioned an article in the Mail about a proposed £3.1bn takeover of Tottenham.

BBC Sport's Alex Howell has been looking into that story.

It seems Tottenham's owners have no intention of selling the club and are committed to their long-term plans, following reports billionaire Jahm Najafi is set to launch a takeover of the north London club.

No approach has been made so far by Iranian-American Najafi, who is a minority shareholder in NBA team the Phoenix Suns.

Najafi is chair of sports investment company MSP Sports Capital; the Financial Times reports, external he is working with a consortium of investors to put together a bid for Spurs.

It added Najafi was weeks away from approaching Tottenham owner Joe Lewis and Spurs chairman Daniel Levy.

I'm a very disappointed Gooner today! Always thought we should have signed another number 9? Nketiah has done us proud but last night he missed 3 clear cut chances that could have changed the game! Trossard is a decent player but he's a winger not a centre forward! We just didn't take our chances last night and eventually got found out by City! We still have a game in hand and must dust ourselves down and go again! One thing for sure is City are not as consistent as last season and I'm pretty sure they will concede points somewhere, but I can also say the same about Arsenal!

    Arsenal 1-3 Man City

    BBC Sounds

Pep Guardiola was asked after the game if he’d find his old apprentice, Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta, for a drink before heading back to Manchester…

“I don’t know, I would like to see him, but at the same time I understand as when I lose a game I don’t want to talk to anyone!” said the Manchester City manager.

Guardiola was full of praise for Arteta, adding: “He has changed this club in a positive way and will of course be rivals until the end. 50 points in the first leg of the season, to do this you have to be brilliant."

    Matt Upson
Former Arsenal defender on BBC Radio 5 Live

I think Erling Haaland played a key part. I liked watching the battle between him and William Saliba. I thought Saliba did well.

But he wears opponents down, then you've got [Ilkay] Gundogan or [Kevin] De Bruyne in the space left behind, then [Riyad] Mahrez and [Jack] Grealish. Whether he gets the joy or others do, that is what makes them a top team.

There was lots of talk about the finish, but for me his left foot touch to bring the ball onto his right foot in the same motion while he's putting the brakes on [was superb].

    It was clinical from City.

    BBC Sounds

Ruben Dias takes off his shirt to throw to the crowd after Manchester City's win at ArsenalImage source, Getty Images

“This is what we live for,” Manchester City defender Ruben Dias told BBC Radio 5 Live after Wednesday night's 3-1 win at Arsenal, which moved them above their rivals into to spot in the Premier League.

After a testing period for the club on and off the pitch, Dias certainly agreed when asked if there was a release of emotion on the final whistle.

“This means everything to us,” said the Portugal international.

“Obviously, when you come to these moments against your rival, in first place, it means everything.

"For me and the team, obviously that’s the way to live it. It’s one game at a time, but when you’re in that game you leave everything there and make sure you have nothing left to give on the pitch, then everything will come easier.”

“We know how talented and good our team is," added Dias.

"So, in the end, it's about fighting and making sure we get the best of ourselves. If we get that it will be difficult for someone to beat us.”

Head to BBC Sounds for all the reaction on the Football Daily podcast.
