  1. 'An incident that no-one is going to tolerate'published at 09:57 Greenwich Mean Time 17 February 2023

Aston Villa v Arsenal (Sat, 12:30)

    Arsenal

Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta on the FA's investigation into objects thrown onto the pitch during Wednesday's defeat at home to Manchester City: "Our fans were extraordinary in the game with their level of support and the way they helped to inspire the team.

"There was an incident at the end that no-one is going to tolerate within this stadium and the club is investigating."

What next after taking one point from three Premier League games?: "It is normal that you want to get maximum points, which we didn't in the last few games.

"We have to look at ourselves. We have to be more efficient - with amount of play and situations we generated we haven't had enough points. That is down to us, we have to improve on that because we want to win more games.

"So we are highly motivated for tomorrow's game because we want to perform well and win the game."

On Aston Villa manager Unai Emery: "He will always put a very difficult test. He is a very good manager. I have huge respect for him and for what he has done at every club he has been and the success he has had. So big respect for him."

  2. 'We are highly motivated'published at 09:47 Greenwich Mean Time 17 February 2023

Aston Villa v Arsenal (Sat, 12:30)

    Arsenal

Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta, speaking ahead of Saturday's Premier League match at Aston Villa, on dropping down to second place after losing to Manchester City: "I know the right things we have to do to continue to be there [at the top].

"We have seen where the level is and what we have to do to be at that level.

"There are a lot of positive things to take, for sure, from the season so far [and Wednesday night's defeat at home to Manchester City].

"We know that the level of efficiency has to be good with every single game to beat them [City] at the end.

"We are highly motivated to do that."

What would be the minimum you want from the season? The title? Champions League qualification?: "The minimum is today that they need to train exceptionally well - that is the minimum."

On defeat to Manchester City: "You have to give credit to a team when they beat you, but when you analyse the game again, I think we lost it."

Right, it's time to turn our attention from last night's football to this weekend's Premier League action as a busy day of manager news conferences kicks off with Arsenal's Mikel Arteta.

The Gunners, whose unbeaten home run was ended on Wednesday by Manchester City, have been replaced at the top of the Premier League table by Pep Guardiola's reigning champions.

Can they bounce back at Aston Villa in Saturday's early kick-off?

  6. Qatari bid expected as deadline approachespublished at 09:29 Greenwich Mean Time 17 February 2023

    Manchester United

BBC Sport's Simon Stone has been answering questions about a potential Qatari takeover of Manchester United.

    Who has bid so far?

Despite suggestions that United have not attracted the interest expected by their owners, insiders have told BBC Sport the process has proceeded positively.

As they stated in their announcement on a potential sale in November, the Glazer family are still considering "all strategic alternatives" for the club, which could include new investment or other transactions involving the company.

Lifelong United fan Sir Jim Ratcliffe, one of Britain's richest men, is said to be determined in his interest and is understood to have employed the services of banking giants JP Morgan and Goldman Sachs to help him.

As with Chelsea, US interest is set to be backed by private equity. Bids from Qatar and Saudi Arabia are complicated due to the ownership of Paris St-Germain and Newcastle respectively.

Canada wore purple T-shirts with the phrase "enough is enough" to protest against their national association before their 2-0 loss to the USA in the SheBelieves Cup in Orlando, Florida.

The team, in dispute with Canada Soccer because of concerns over funding cuts and a lack of pay equality, were joined by the USA in a huddle before kick-off.

Earlier in the week, the Olympic champions called off strike action.

Canada captain Christine Sinclair said her team were "mentally exhausted".

What is the best way to sum up Lauren James' influence for England? Captain Leah Williamson has borrowed a phrase from the gaming world.

"I think she's a cheat code," Williamson said. "I enjoy being on the same team as her."

James has had to be patient for an England chance - she only made her full international debut last September - but is grabbing it now.

The 21-year-old forward has often been Chelsea's star this season, and strengthened her claims for a place in Sarina Wiegman's World Cup starting line-up with another impressive performance against South Korea on Thursday.

Her role in the 4-0 victory in England's Arnold Clark Cup opener was another demonstration of her growing stature as she scored her first international goal, after winning a first-half penalty.

The four-team, round-robin international tournament sees each side play each other once. The team top of the table after three matches are crowned champions.

The cup is one of several mini-tournaments in the women's international football calendar, with England now hosting their own rather than taking part in the annual SheBelieves Cup, hosted by the United States.

The 2022 edition featured Germany, Canada, England and Spain, who were third, sixth, eighth and ninth respectively in the Fifa world rankings.

This year the Lionesses - up to fourth in the world in Fifa's rankings - started clear favourites against 15th-ranked South Korea, world number 17 Italy, and Belgium, who are 20th.

For South Korea and Italy, it will also serve as preparation for this summer's World Cup, which starts on 20 July. Belgium, who beat Italy 1-0 to reach the Euro 2022 quarter-finals, failed to qualify.

England women's defence of the Arnold Clark Cup got off to the perfect start as they beat South Korea 4-0 at Stadium MK.

Chelsea's Lauren James was a standout performer as she scored her first goal for the Lionesses in the second half after earlier winning a penalty, which Georgia Stanway coolly fire in for the opener.

England had dominated possession and were cruising in the second half after Chloe Kelly made it 2-0 within 16 seconds of the restart, before Manchester United's Alessia Russo smartly dinked it past the goalkeeper at the near post.

James' thumping strike late on sealed victory for the European champions, who won the inaugural Arnold Clark Cup tournament last year.

Manchester United manager Erik Ten Hag Ten Hag told BT Sport: "I think it was a great game. Two attacking teams, I think it was a Champions League game, even more than that, so I really enjoyed the game. In the end (it finished) 2-2, and we have to finish it in Old Trafford.

"Of course I will credit [Marcus] Rashford definitely because he is in great form, but the whole team did well. I think it was a really good team performance.

"We have a lot of character and determination in this team. The belief we had to score the first goal and the meaning of the first goal is so important and that's what we didn't do."
