The concern for the top clubs is that Ten Hag is doing a great job. His signings are all starting to come together now, they have been good and positive.

He commands authority and players respect his tactical approach. The intensity they play at comes from the manager and the players are living up to his expectations now.

‘Wor Alan, who art in the commentary box, hallowed be thy goals. Cup final day comes, and we pray it gets done, in 90, and still, with a full 11. Give us this day, our daily broon, and forgive Dan Burn for leaving some in on Rashford, and don't forgive VAR for Utd getting away with snidey offside goals. Lead us not into deflation, infront of the nation....And may Tripz deliver, pure right footed evil, for Maxxys grateful recieval. For thine will be the Carabao, the hour and the stories, for ever and... Well at least another year. Howay.’

Manchester United boss Erik ten Hag met Sir Alex Ferguson for dinner the other night.

Ten Hag then pulled a trick straight out of the Ferguson mind games playbook on Friday when he called Newcastle 'annoying' for perceived time-wasting tactics.

That has put the spotlight on referee David Coote. And, whilst time-wasting is not a VAR 'offence', Peter Bankes is today's man in the hot-seat.

Former Newcastle defender Steven Taylor: "Newcastle have been a sleeping giant for years. Going to win the cup will change everything - with the city it is huge.

"It is similar to the Bobby Robson days with the feel-good factor Eddie Howe has created. It has put Newcastle back on the map. There is no reason Newcastle can't go into this full of confidence.

Former Crystal Palace and Republic of Ireland forward Clinton Morrison added: "Newcastle are massively on track. The way they have done it has been fantastic. Everyone said Howe was a short-term replacement, he has turned this football club around.

"They defend, know what it is like to play for this football club and they have some talented individuals. I think the game will go to penalties and Karius could well be the hero.

"Manchester United are playing with freedom, they feel they can beat anyone. Marcus Rashford is probably the most in-form forward in Europe at the moment. It is going to be a brilliant final."

Manchester United have been in great form but now it's about delivering in a final under pressure, that's where the pressure lies.

Casemiro is one who has done it in Champions League finals, he'll understand that pressure and will help others around him to do their job.

    BBC Sport

Manchester United hope to win their first trophy in almost six years when they meet Newcastle in the Carabao Cup Cup final at Wembley.

It is the next step in a season of progression at Old Trafford.

Had they not lost their opening two Premier League games against Brighton and Brentford, United would now be regarded as genuine title contenders. They remain in the FA Cup and have now emerged triumphant from a pulsating two-legged Europa League tussle with European heavyweights Barcelona in what Ten Hag described as his 'biggest win' since arriving at the club in May.

The upbeat feeling amongst supporters is far removed from the mess their club appeared to be in at the end of last season.

United won 38 trophies during Alex Ferguson's 26-year reign at Old Trafford, including 13 league titles, two Champions Leagues, five FA Cups and four League Cups.

However, since his departure in 2013 they have won only the FA Cup under Louis van Gaal, the League Cup, Europa League and Community Shield under Jose Mourinho, and the Community Shield under David Moyes.

But the start of Erik ten Hag's reign has restored hope to the Old Trafford faithful.

  14. Big praise from Schmeichelpublished at 16:02 Greenwich Mean Time 26 February 2023

Man Utd v Newcastle (16:30 GMT)

Manchester United great Peter Schmeichel believes manager Erik ten Hag is like "vintage Sir Alex" and thinks that, for the first time in a long time, you can see a group of players who are proud to wear the shirt.

Speaking on BBC Radio 5 Live's Football Daily podcast after United's win over Barcelona on Thursday, the former goalkeeper said: "The pride of playing for this football club is so evident on the pitch.

"In my time, if you didn’t have that you wouldn’t be here - simple as that. In the past 10 years, we've seen far too many players come here for the wrong reasons.

"I’m not saying these players are not well paid, but they play for the football club and they play for the supporters. At the end of the day, they play for the manager and they support the manager. It’s fantastic to see and it’s taken 10 years to get to this point.

"This is the cause of all my optimism. This season, anything can really happen. We can win nothing - and we can win a lot. But I see the progress and I’m really happy with that.

"Everything Ten Hag has faced, he’s dealt with it in the correct way, in the way that any Manchester United manager worth his salt would have done.

"Vintage Sir Alex in certain situations, where I am thinking: ‘Wow, we have got the right man here.’.

"It was a big test, it was a big win - but in the grand scheme of things it’s just a step towards where we really want to be and that is fantastic."

  15. Man Utd must 'test' Newcastle goalkeeper - Ten Hagpublished at 16:00 Greenwich Mean Time 26 February 2023

Man Utd v Newcastle (16:30 GMT)

Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag says it is important for his players to "test" whoever is in goal for Newcastle United in Sunday's Carabao Cup final.

Fourth-choice goalkeeper Loris Karius is likely to get the nod for the Magpies at Wembley.

Nick Pope is suspended after his red card against Liverpool last weekend and Martin Dubravka is cup-tied after featuring for the Red Devils earlier in the competition, while Karl Darlow is out on loan at Hull City.

"That's an issue for them that they have to sort," said Ten Hag. "Of course we know it. The one who is holding [the position] can influence it, and of course we have to test it, that's quite obvious."

United have not lifted a trophy since winning the Europa League in May 2017, while Ten Hag is looking to mark his first season in charge at Old Trafford with a competition success.

He added: "It's a great opportunity to get the silverware in. It's about glory and honour in football.

"We deserve to play the final and now we have a great opportunity to win the cup.

"We have to put everything in to get that cup to Manchester. You can feel that the fans are really waiting for it and we will do everything we can to give the fans their honour."

Rick Harris: Disappointing to see ten Hag name his strongest lineup. Top 4 and Europa League are the priorities in a packed schedule. FA Cup is a nice day out at best. League Cup is just an opportunity to get injured.

The scale of support for Newcastle United here at Wembley is astonishing. Black and white stripes are everywhere as The Toon Army have headed south in vast numbers.

Loris Karius is out warming up. He can barely have imagined getting this chance in a major final and there will be a lot of people wishing him well after his traumatic experience for Liverpool in the 2018 Champions League Final loss to Real Madrid.

Karius has just been joined by the rest of his team-mates and the roar that greeted them was deafening.

Former Magpies and England centre forward Alan Shearer, speaking to BBC Radio Newcastle: "I'm there as a fan on Sunday, that drive up to Wembley way when you can see the Newcastle fans - it's the only time I wish I could put my boots back on.

"Wembley is only a place for winners. It's a blooming horrible place when you don't win. I've been there in finals and semi-finals and it's horrible for the players and for the fans [if you lose].

"I lived the dream, now they're living the dream - they're lucky boys. As soon as you leave the hotel it's a great journey to Wembley and seeing the black and white shirts, the cheering, the scarves, it's just incredible. It sent a shiver down my spine."
