  1. Thanks and good nightpublished at 19:30 British Summer Time 2 April 2023

That's it from us for today.

You can read all about the two games on the site. Keep an eye out for further reaction pieces through the evening.

We'll be back tomorrow for Everton v Tottenham.

And look at that... it's still just about light out. Night all!

  2. Shaw reveals team meeting after defeatpublished at 19:29 British Summer Time 2 April 2023

    FT: Newcastle 2-0 Man Utd

    Manchester United

Man Utd defender Luke Shaw, speaking to Sky Sports: "Not good enough. I feel like every time I speak after games I’m always honest. As a team we have to be honest. I don’t think Newcastle won on quality today, they won on desire, passion, hunger, attitude. They had a higher motivation than we did. That can’t be possible. I feel I say the same every time we lose. They wanted it more. At Man Utd that shouldn’t be possible.

"It’s unacceptable. It’s not what we want to set out to be. In big games you need that hunger. We didn’t create too much. Maybe you can say it’s been coming. Our levels dropped before the international break. We have three days to pick it back up.

"The players had a chat in the changing room after with no staff round. It’s down to us. It was nowhere near good enough. We had to speak out in front of each other.

“It’s important. We’re a team. When we go out onto the pitch, we have to fight for each other. Sometimes it hasn’t looked like that.

“I’m sure we’ll speak again. We need to realise the problems quickly and change it round. We still can have a very good season but with results and performances like this we can’t.

“I’m close [to a new contract]. Nothing has been signed yet. We’ve agreed certain things. We’ll take it from there.”

  3. 'Still a lot of games to go'published at 19:28 British Summer Time 2 April 2023

    FT: Newcastle 2-0 Man Utd

    Newcastle United

Newcastle manager Eddie Howe, speaking to BBC Match of the Day: "It was an important win and mostly it was a really good performance from the players. It was really high energy, high quality and a lot of chances created.

"We kept knocking on the door. Tribute to our fitness levels today. In my opinion, we got stronger in the game, even though we were giving so much to it. Our substitutes made a big difference to it too. They played a big part.

"We are a team of really good athletes and we want to use that and play a high-energy, high-pressing style. We want the ball in play and consistently work on that on the training pitch and it paid off today.

"There are still a lot of games to come even though it is April. Three games in six days this coming week so we know we really have to focus on Wednesday."

  4. 'We deserved to lose'published at 19:26 British Summer Time 2 April 2023

    FT: Newcastle 2-0 Man Utd

    Manchester United

Man Utd defender Luke Shaw, speaking to BBC Match of the Day: "Not what we wanted. Not what we were expecting. When you come here to a tough stadium and a very good side and you don’t come with the right attitude and hunger it will be a tough day. That showed today. We deserved to lose.

“Especially after the international break, the whole team had a bit of rest. Our levels had dropped, that was clear to see. Coming in today we felt good and ready for the game. The whistle goes and it's the complete opposite to what we've been doing in training.

    "Unacceptable.

"We spoke out in the dressing room. We’ll speak again. We have to work out what the problems are and leave them behind. We can still have a good season.

"With the players we have we can always create a chance. We were calm, composed and we knew if we got one chance we could score. We didn’t create too many. That’s not us. I can’t really remember a big chance.

“We have to be honest, Arsenal and City have been the best teams, winning every game. They deserve to be the top two.

"The most important thing for us is we’re still in two competitions we feel we can win. We have to get in the Champions League. We are the biggest club in world, we have to be in the Champions League. We have to refocus and get back to winning ways."

Great day for Newcastle but I worry for next season. Expectations will be sky high, but they can't spend silly money. There need to be additions to the squad, but this may disrupt the great team spirit.. and football twice a week as well. Just look at what happened to West Ham & Leicester.

  6. 'We didn't match Newcastle's desire'published at 19:20 British Summer Time 2 April 2023

    FT: Newcastle 2-0 Man Utd

    Manchester United

Man Utd boss Erik ten Hag, speaking to BBC Match of the Day: "I think it was deserving for Newcastle. They were more determined and had more passion and desire to score a goal. Also, to defend their box, which they did very well. We had the spaces and the opportunities but we did not use them.

"David [de Gea] made one great save. They had many shots from the edge and we put in blocks there. But we have to stop them before they come in to the final third. We didn't do that well. The blocks were good but better is to stop it at source.

"No [the Cup runs are not affecting league form]. Always I can see the need to find stories. You have to see that every game is important, every league is important. We know how tough it is to come here and I know they want to take revenge. You have to show the same passion, desire and determination of the opponent. We didn't and we got killed.

"I am sure [there will be a reaction]. That is what we have shown all season so far."

  8. Man Utd missing Casemiropublished at 19:16 British Summer Time 2 April 2023

    FT: Newcastle 2-0 Man Utd

Manchester United have lost four of their eight Premier League games without Casemiro this season, compared to three of 19 when he has played.

  9. 'They wanted to win more so they won'published at 19:10 British Summer Time 2 April 2023

    FT: Newcastle 2-0 Man Utd

    Manchester United

Manchester United boss Erik ten Hag to Sky Sports: “I hate to say it but they were better today – especially their determination, passion and desire. They wanted to win more so they won.

“We had our opportunities but then you have to go for goal with the determination they did. It wasn’t good enough. We allowed them too many chances. You have to be hungry and give everything every game.

“Our attacking game wasn’t good enough. I don’t want to focus on one person. It was a team performance."

On his subs: “We were not happy. We played too high in midfield and it was easy for their two centre-halves to go and attack. We had to play a little bit deeper. Therefore we made the sub. Then we made changes to bring more energy. Then in the end we were losing so we decided to go with three at the back and play an extra offensive player and I decided to take both centre-backs off with Lindelof to defend the spaces.

“We have to deal with the setback and learn a lesson. So many times recently, we came back after Liverpool. I don’t have that concern. I believe in the team. I believe we’ll bounce back.”

If Newcastle pip Spurs to Champions League, how many millions does that knock off Kane's price? Maybe this isn't such a bad result for Man Utd after all...

Poor Maguire, ETH uses four centre backs and he's still on the bench. Moving on in the summer.

  12. 'We're one step closer'published at 19:01 British Summer Time 2 April 2023

    FT: Newcastle 2-0 Man Utd

    Newcastle United

Newcastle goalscorer Callum Wilson to Sky Sports: "We were disappointed with the [Carabao Cup] final. It left a sour taste in our mouth. We had to put it right in front of our fans.

"As a striker all you can do is respond. A few weeks out of the team. All you can do is take the opportunity when it comes round. Nobody likes to be on the bench. When you get called on, it's the perfect way to respond.

"There's a long way to go. We're one step closer. It was important we carried the momentum from before the international break. Now we want to build on it. It's about wins. Draws won't be enough."

  13. 'For a long time we've disliked Man Utd as fans'published at 18:58 British Summer Time 2 April 2023

    FT: Newcastle 2-0 Man Utd

    Newcastle United

Newcastle defender Dan Burn to Sky Sports: "Really special. For a long time we’ve always disliked Man Utd as Newcastle fans. We owed them one. It was good to get a win today.

"Desperate [to beat them]. Over the seasons we’ve always wanted to beat Man Utd. Great performance from the lads. Delighted to get the win and clean sheet."

On marking Antony and Marcus Rashford: "Tough players, world-class players. Antony has given us a few good games. To have that extra emotion as a fan, especially at home, comes out sometimes, maybe a bit much.

"Hopefully [they can get into the Champions League]. Big result today. Going into the last 11 games we have a really good chance."

From the first minute Newcastle have deserved this.

Manchester United didn't have enough of the ball to sustain any sort of pressure.

Newcastle have been cheered on by a very passionate crowd and they deserved to win.

Losing a cup final hurts but they've turned up, worked their socks off and said we're not being beaten today.

Newcastle were excellent today. We've seen a glimpse this season of what it would be like, should Champions League football return here!
