Steve Cooper says 'we know we need to play better'

Nottingham Forest boss Steve Cooper says he knows his side "need to play better" after owner Evangelos Marinakis called for results and performances to improve "immediately".

Forest are 17th in the Premier League, above the relegation zone only on goal difference.

They have not won in eight games, the longest winless run in the top flight.

"Regarding winning games, that didn't need to be in the statement, we know that already," Cooper said.

Marinakis released a statement on Wednesday reaffirming that Cooper, who joined Forest in September 2021 and guided them to the Premier League for the first time since 1999 in his first season, remained manager.

"We need to play better than how we did the other night [against Leeds] and win more games than we have been winning, that has always been my focus and always is," Cooper said before Saturday's trip to in-form Aston Villa.

"I've got constant dialogue with the owner so something coming out publicly, there was nothing there that was a surprise to me.

"The club are annoyed with some articles being written before games and they felt they wanted to put an end to that. They were articles that didn't bother me, if I'm being honest - if they do don't do this job."

  2. 'We have to be more clinical'published at 14:49 British Summer Time 8 April 2023

    FT: Man Utd 2-0 Everton

    Manchester United

Manchester United manager Erik Ten Hag speaking to BBC Match of the Day: "We have to be more clinical and more ruthless and this game has to be finished by half time and we didn't. But it is still a very good performance and it is still a big compliment to the team."

On Martial: "Once again players coming from the bench having an impact and scoring goals. We have many subs who come on this season and score goals."

On Bruno Fernandes: "I think he was brilliant and he has played brilliant in a deeper role and even last week against Newcastle he played very well and today - brilliant. He was definitely the best player on the pitch."

Fulham v West Ham (15:00 BST)

Fulham have lost four of their last five Premier League games against West Ham United (D1) since beating them 2-1 on New Year's Day 2014.

West Ham have won seven of their 12 away Premier League games against Fulham (D2 L3). It’s the most away wins they’ve had against an opponent in the competition.

No side have won fewer points in Premier League London derbies this season than West Ham (5). The Hammers have lost their last six such away games, which is their joint-longest losing run in London derby matches in their league history.

  4. The rise of Thomas Frank: 'Most players loved him'published at 14:47 British Summer Time 8 April 2023

    Mark Sanderson, BBC Sport

Thomas Frank was part of the Danish youth set-up until 2013, when he was offered a first-team coaching role at Danish Superliga giants Brondby. The club had not lifted the title since 2005, having won it six times between 1988 and 1998.

Viking midfielder Martin Ornskov was not as familiar with Frank as his younger compatriots when he received a call asking him to join Brondby and help take the club back to the top.

Looking back, he believes Frank thought he could replicate what he did in youth football at Brondby.

"He made some mistakes at first," he said. "And at times he was a little soft."

These were the teething problems of a coach making the jump to senior football, with Ornskov recalling players occasionally overstepping the mark with tackles in training. In time, Frank put measures in place to show who was boss.

Training ended with small-sided games. If any team lost by five goals they would have to stay on for extra practice. Ornskov enjoyed Frank's collaborative approach.

"There were times when he'd discuss solutions with us during games," he said. "Far from seeing it as a weakness, I saw that as a strength."

The former Brondby midfielder wonders if that is part of the Danish mentality - when being told to do something is not sufficient if they are not told of the purpose behind doing so. His assessment? Most players loved him.

Strong reports suggesting former Leeds manager Jesse Marsch is closing in on being appointed as Leicester City manager to replace Brendan Rodgers who was sacked last Sunday.

The club are refusing to comment on those rumours.

One to keep an eye on.

Manchester United had chance after chance. Jordan Pickford did very well.

In the end, United put them away. Everton allowed United to get through them so easily.

A tricky game but a very good win.

Leicester and Bournemouth both start the day in the bottom three.

Who would have thought we'd be saying that in April at the start of the season?

Leicester, who are still under the stewardship of caretaker manager Adam Sadler, are 19th with 25 points.

Bournemouth are two points above them in 18th.

Both have eight games left after today, and three points for either side could be crucial as the run-in intensifies.

Scotland and Aston Villa defender on Final Score

I was disappointed with Everton, it’s not what you expect from a Sean Dyche side.

Today United were on the front foot from the start.

It’s a worry from Everton’s point of view but you ignore today’s result and focus on the next game.

  9. 'It's a minor blip'published at 14:43 British Summer Time 8 April 2023

    FT: Man Utd 2-0 Everton

    Everton

Everton defender James Tarkowski speaking to BBC Match of the Day: "It's hard to maintain the standard we've been pushing and some days you have off days like this. It was a shame we went a goal down late on in the first half. Before their second goal I thought we had a chance. We thought we could stick in there but not today."

On Jordan Pickford: "He's outstanding, and you see it today because we gave them golden opportunities. I think it's just a reminder of the levels we need to be at to stay in this league. It's a minor blip in what has been a good run. we've just got to focus on the next one."

On the relegation battle: "I think we look at every game as an opportunity and we don't look too far ahead of ourselves, especially under this manager. So we will just focus on one game at a time and look forward to next weekend."

    Wolves v Chelsea (15:00 BST)

    Joe Cole
Ex-Chelsea and England midfielder on BT Sport

It makes perfect sense for me [for Lampard to come in]. First of all, I'm disappointed for Graham Potter. I think he handled himself with great dignity during his time at Chelsea, with the very, very difficult job he had. I always err on the side of giving managers time but I think once the decision was made to let him go, it made perfect sense for Frank.

I'm absolutely delighted for him. He's going to really galvanise the club. Chelsea have been in this position many, many times. That's the one thing I would say about the group of players and the club: they know how to handle a change of manager and they bounce back. Look what happened the first time Frank lost his job: Thomas Tuchel came in and they won the Champions League.

Frank will be thinking he's coming in as temporary and he would love to take the job permanently. I'm sure of that. No one's better positioned or situated to take that club forward."

Chelsea interim boss Frank Lampard received a big cheer from travelling fans when he stepped off the team coach outside the front doors of Molineux.

He says there are "no worries" concerning N'Golo Kante and that the reason for his absence is because "we are managing him" through the amount of games Chelsea have.

Lampard added: "It's been an interesting week. I am delighted to be here. I have had two days to work with the players. It's a pleasure to work for this club.

"There is no way we are going to take it lightly [Wolves game before facing Real Madrid in Champions League]. We know we want to be in a better position than we are at the minute. I know how hard Wolves will be. We've got to be on our game."

    Everton

Everton goalkeeper Jordan Pickford: "We know they are a good side with them being in the top four.

"We were still in the game with it being 1-0 but as a team unit we need to be better.

"We had a game plan and sometimes you have to hold your hand up. We have got to keep grafting and working hard.

"We know as a team we want to be much better and coming to Old Trafford we need to step up to the plate.

"We have eight games left and they are eight finals."

  14. Rashford a worrypublished at 14:39 British Summer Time 8 April 2023

    FT: Man Utd 2-0 Everton

    Simon Stone
    BBC Sport at Old Trafford

I guess if Marcus Rashford is going to pick up an injury at any time, it is better for it to happen when Anthony Martial has recovered his fitness, Christian Eriksen has returned and Casemiro completes his four-match domestic ban.

But still, the sight of him slowly making his way up the tunnel was not great.

I doubt Erik ten Hag will know the full extent of the problem just yet but in a month that includes a Europa League quarter-final with Sevilla and an FA Cup semi-final with Brighton, he needs his best players to be fit.

Newcastle have got their mojo back. They’re back to where they were pre-World Cup.

They look so fit, they’re going after teams again.

They’re back to scoring goals and they’ve certainly got their confidence back.

Fulham currently sit 10th in their first season back in the Premier League and have surprised many people so far this campaign.

Part of their success has been down to the former of striker Aleksandar Mitrovic, who has scored 11 Premier League goals.

However the Serbia international is currently serving an eight-match ban for pushing referee Chris Kavanagh in the Cottagers' FA Cup defeat at Manchester United.

With Mitrovic this season Fulham have taken 32 points from 66 available. Without that is down to seven from 21.

    Could they struggle without Mitrovic?

    Shamoon Hafez
BBC Sport at King Power Stadium

This is a monumental clash at the bottom end of the Premier League table with 18th placed Bournemouth travelling to Leicester City in 19th.

The Foxes sacked Brendan Rodgers in a panic last Sunday and without a replacement lined up have first team coach Adam Sadler and goalkeeping coach Mike Stowell in caretaker charge.

The hosts are on a wretched run of form having collected just eight points since Christmas and losing three in a row at the King Power, while the Cherries have lost eight of their past nine league games.

    Score draw then?
