Former Everton striker on BBC Radio 5 Live

We’re looking at a bottom five now. There is a gap and the teams in that bottom five are not getting the results.

It will be four out of five. I think Southampton might get cut adrift at Newcastle this weekend and then it will be two from four.

Each of Bournemouth's last six Premier League home goals has been scored by a different player. Kieffer Moore is the Cherries' top scorer at the Vitality Stadium this season with four goals, though his last strike came before the World Cup break in November.

Having scored 17 goals in 23 home league games for Bournemouth in the Championship last season, Dominic Solanke has netted just once in 14 appearances at the Vitality Stadium this season.

  7. What would relegation mean for Leeds?published at 13:36 British Summer Time 30 April 2023

Relegation would be exasperating for supporters and affect the expansion of the club, but it would probably not be as catastrophic as in 2004.

Leeds are not saddled with the same unmanageable debt that saw former chairman Ken Bates eventually plunge them into administration. The latest accounts show an operating loss of £34m on a record turnover of £189m.

As things stand, majority takeover by the San Francisco 49ers is expected should the club stay in the Premier League. Relegation may not prevent that but the decrease in revenues could hamper plans to develop Elland Road to a 60,000 capacity.

It is unlikely head coach Javi Gracia would stay and players would be sold. Wilfried Gnonto, Illan Meslier, Jack Harrison and Tyler Adams would likely chase top-level football, while contributing to a wage bill that stands at £121m.

Leeds' ability to make an immediate return would depend on who comes in to manage experienced heads such as Luke Ayling and Liam Cooper and develop youngsters such as Joe Gelhardt and Charlie Cresswell, along with emerging talents Archie Gray and Darko Gyabi.

Regardless, the club needs a reset whether it goes up or down.

    Bournemouth v Leeds (14:00 BST)

    Chris SuttonImage source, BBC Sport

    Chris Sutton's prediction: 1-1

I was at St Mary's Stadium on Thursday and Bournemouth really impressed me with their performance against Southampton.

As I've mentioned before, I haven't backed them often this season but they are a really well-balanced side and they should have won by a bigger margin than 2-1.

Leeds, meanwhile, are in desperate need a win after taking only one point from their past four games. Where will it come from though?

Javi Gracia's team are such a patchy side and it's hard to make a case for them playing well for long enough to win, but they might come up with enough to grab a draw if the Cherries take their foot off the gas.

Blanco's prediction: Leeds are poor - they are all over the place defensively - but I like them because of the style of football they played under Marcelo Bielsa when they first came into the Premier League. So I am putting them down to win this one. I doubt it will happen, I really do, but they will definitely put up a fight anyway. 1-2

    Bournemouth v Leeds (14:00 BST)

    Glenn Murray
Former Brighton striker on BBC Radio 5 Live

Leeds are a club I fear for. When Javi Gracia went in there was a reaction and it was positive, but they seem to have lost that momentum.

Bournemouth away next is critical in their season and then I see they have to play Man City, Newcastle, West Ham and Spurs on the last day. That, for me, is the worst run-in of the bottom five.

Leeds are like Southampton in their set-up with youthful, energetic players. If they do remain in the Premier League I think they could blossom into a good team but it is imperative they stay up.

    Illia ZabarnyiImage source, Getty Images

Gary O'Neil is "excited" about seeing Illia Zabarnyi play more Premier League games.

The 20-year-old defender joined Bournemouth from Dynamo Kyiv on transfer deadline day in January, but has only made two appearances so far after returning from an ankle injury at the beginning of April.

"It is always a temptation [to start Zabarnyi], because obviously he is an exciting prospect," said the Cherries boss. "But would be doing a disservice to some of the other boys who have been putting on some incredible defensive displays.

"Chris Mepham was excellent again [againstSouthampton], Lloyd Kelly against Theo Walcott did everything we asked of him and, after a little while out, Marcos Senesi did well."

Zabarnyi started on the bench in their win over the Saints on Thursday and played 22 minutes in the second half. O'Neil says the Ukraine prospect could have more opportunities in the final five games of the season.

"It means we're doing well if it's tough to get in the team," he added. "Illia is in a good place, is improving all the time and he is still young.

"We still have lots of work to do with him but I am excited to see how he does in some more Premier League football matches."

Former Premier League midfielder Michael Brown believes Bournemouth are all but safe and "can go and plan for a brighter future" in the Premier League.

He told BBC Radio 5 Live's Football Daily that boss Gary O'Neil deserves "all the credit" for the job he has done with the Cherries.

"It’s incredible. At one point Gary O’Neil was under pressure, there was talk of Bielsa and that they were almost going to make that change," he said.

"You looked at the table and thought Bournemouth and Southampton, plus another [to go down]. It just tells you how good a job he has done.

"They have played it in a really good way. They had a good hiding, recovered, came back, had some good results and they have done it playing a good style of football.

"I’ve got to give Gary O’Neil an unbelievable amount of credit. The recruitment obviously helped them in the January window and now they can go and plan for a brighter future and invest a little bit more.

"You're looking at somebody who has been very successful and there is a job to be continued. It looks like they are going to do it and you have to give him all the credit."

Aston Villa defender Rachel Corsie added: "He's done an incredible job. When Scott Parker left it sounded like there were some issues there which can cause a lot of disruption.

"I think he has really galvanised that group. Where they are is an incredible achievement and I do think they will be safe."

The hosts, who have scored 10 goals in their last two games, are looking to consolidate their position in the hunt for Champions League qualification.

    • Southampton have won just one of their last 17 Premier League away games against Newcastle (D4 L12), picking up a 2-1 victory in January 2015 under Ronald Koeman.
    • No side has lost fewer Premier League home games than Newcastle this season (1). They have won their last three at St James' Park by an aggregate score of 10-2.
    • Newcastle have lost just one of their last 22 Premier League games against sides starting the day in the relegation zone (W12 D9), going down 1-0 at Sheffield United in January 2021.
    • Southampton are winless in their last 18 Premier League games against sides starting the day in the top four (D8 L10), since beating Liverpool 1-0 in January 2021.

After a home midweek defeat, I cant help but think Southampton’s time in the Premier League is coming to an end.

But I think there are still plenty of twists and turns to come.

At the start of the season I would not have expected Leicester and Everton to be down there. I would have expected Leeds to do better. The Premier League is so punishing and if you take your eye off the ball it can happen to any football club.

Newcastle United: Eddie Howe hails Alexander Isak as he compares him to Thierry Henry

    Joe Douglas, BBC Sport

It is the assist that has social media talking - and has led manager Eddie Howe to discuss comparisons between Alexander Isak and France legend Thierry Henry after the Newcastle forward starred in their 4-1 win over Everton.

The 23-year-old Swede's stunning assist saw him gain possession near the half-way line, before dribbling past three Everton defenders - including beating Mason Holgate and Michael Keane twice each - and crossing for Jacob Murphy to tap in at the far post.

Asked by a journalist about a likeness between Isak's footwork and balance to France and Arsenal legend Henry, Howe said:"Yes, I can, I can see the comparisons there.

"Everyone is different, there are no two players that are the same, but I do think he has some of the characteristics Thierry had."

However, despite all the attention, official statistics - and Fantasy Football - do not count it as a confirmed assist because of a deflection off Everton defender James Tarkowski.

Opta rules state that if the final touch is deflected by an opposition player, the initiator is only given the assist if the receiving player was likely to receive the ball without the extra touch.

However, despite being denied a first assist for the club, Isak again demonstrated his importance since joining from Real Sociedad in August 2022 for a reported £60m. With the Magpies pushing for European football for the first time in a decade, he has scored 10 times in 16 Premier League games despite missing almost four months through injury earlier in the season.

  16. 'Nothing is taken for granted from our perspective'published at 13:20 British Summer Time 30 April 2023

    Newcastle v Southampton (14:00 BST)

Manager Eddie Howe says Newcastle United are taking nothing for granted, despite having a top-four finish all but secured.

Thursday's 4-1 win over Everton leaves the Magpies eight points clear of fifth-placed Tottenham with a game in hand.

Howe said: "It puts us in a lot stronger position. To get six points from Tottenham and Everton is a great return.

"It was always going to be a difficult game for us, but we handled the occasion well in a hostile environment.

"The first goal was going to be crucial. It was probably our best move and it came at a good time for us.

"The confidence was there and it was evident in the second half. Maybe a bit of the edge of the game had gone, but I think we had to earn the right to get to that point because Everton put us under pressure in the first half.

"We know nothing is taken for granted from our perspective."

Eight wins in 10 games. Up to fifth in the table. There seems to be no stopping Aston Villa after they edged past Fulham on Tuesday.

It has been a remarkable rise for Unai Emery's side and, looking at their remaining fixtures, they might not be finished yet.

While fourth-placed Manchester United have three games in hand over them, Villa travel to Old Trafford on Saturday - and a win there would apply some pressure and leave them within two points of a Champions League spot.

Fellow European hopefuls Brighton, Liverpool and Tottenham also all have to face the West Midlands club in their remaining five games, giving Ollie Watkins and co the ideal opportunity to rubber-stamp their entry into European competition for next season.

Emery has made a career of transforming clubs from also-rans to competitors on the highest stage.

A Europa League expedition (or better) with Aston Villa would seem a fitting next step.

  18. Mings 'at vanguard' of Villa resurgence under Emerypublished at 13:16 British Summer Time 30 April 2023

Man Utd v Aston Villa (14:00 BST)

    Mike Taylor
    BBC WM

The reputation of Tyrone Mings at Aston Villa has probably already been fully restored, and perhaps even enhanced, but his winning goal against Fulham last night may prove to be the crown on an outstanding season.

It was a special moment, and Unai Emery revelled in seeing a set-piece plan turn up trumps.

“I am pushing him, telling him ‘You are a tall player and we have to use you. You have to believe in yourself. You have to do it!’ Today was good because we won 1-0 through him.”

The goal, Mings’ first of the season, was a nice bauble, but his greatest contribution has been in his primary role at the other end. Playing alongside Ezri Konsa for every minute of a surge that has yielded 26 points in 10 games, Mings has been vital in a defence breached only three times in that run.

Occasionally, fans suspect players slightly drop intensity after signing a new contract. Exactly the opposite seems to be happening to Mings, whose new deal with Villa was announced a week before this unbeaten run began. Whatever they agreed to pay him, Villa are getting particularly good value.

Are we really still in the same season in which Mings had the club captaincy removed, and was left out of the opening game at Bournemouth? Steven Gerrard was usually cautious with his language during his brief stay at Villa, but he made comments to BBC Radio WM after that game that jarred at the time, notwithstanding that Mings was not always popular for his performances last season.

It should be noted Mings himself was gracious both at the time and after Gerrard’s departure. Anyway, the former captain’s stock has risen enormously since then – and incidentally the same has happened to John McGinn, who was given the role instead – which only goes to show that it is not necessary to wear an armband to be a leader.

At 30, Mings is at the peak of his career, and is in the vanguard as Villa stride forward.

Aston Villa manager Unai Emery has accepted his side are in the mix for European football but believes Champions League qualification may prove "impossible".

The Villans have been in superb form - rising to sixth in the Premier League - but are six points behind fourth-placed Manchester United having played two games more.

Preparing for Sunday's meeting with the Red Devils, Emery said: "The new target is Europe and, of course, that could be Champions League, Europa League or Europa Conference League.

"Champions League is very very difficult - maybe impossible but we have to face the match on Sunday, enjoying the opportunity that we have.

"We are fighting with teams like Tottenham, like Liverpool, who played the final of the Champions League [in 2022], and Brighton, who are having an exceptional season. We have to be very focused but I like to play under pressure and it’s not negative pressure.

"Every day, I have in my mind to try to be aware. If we relax, we can lose. They [the players] have to play with the same focus and the same improvements."

If Aston Villa win today, they will move to within three points of Manchester United, admittedly having played two games more.

It is confirmation of the remarkable job Unai Emery has done since he replaced Steven Gerrard as manager in November.

Emery has some good recent memories against United too.

His Villarreal side beat them on penalties in the 2021 Europa League final in Gdansk.
