Kiss' famous hit only scratches the surface of an utterly crackers night in the Championship. Look at the faces of the fans in the away end at Blackburn. Look at the goalkeeper Ben Wilson celebrating an equaliser.

Now, four becomes three for much of the Championship, as the grains of sand trickle down the hour glass - games and time running out for clubs at the top and the bottom.

Tonight's results were a microcosm of the drama which can happen in the Championship, from goalkeepers bundling in levellers to goalscoring heroes being dismissed.

Again we saw teams show character and spirit, teams deliver courage and quality. Mistakes punished, missed chances rued.

We'll do it all again at the weekend. Time to deliver. Storylines to be written. We'll have them all here.

    Until then, good night.

  2. Cardiff the winners in bottom sixpublished at 22:11 British Summer Time 19 April 2023

At the bottom, Cardiff recorded the stand-out result of the midweek action, as a 3-1 win for the Bluebirds at Watford lifts the Welsh side up to 19th and two points clear of the bottom three.

Reading looked like they might move out of the drop zone but Andy Carroll's red card proved costly as the Royals drew with Luton.

QPR slipped down to 22nd place briefly and have now gone seven games without a win.

It's tight down there but Rotherham and Cardiff have a game in hand on everyone else.

    How it stands

It looks like Luton and Middlesbrough won't catch second-placed Sheffield United - although because the Hatters host Boro on Monday, the Blades cannot be promoted until they play West Brom next Wednesday.

Meanwhile, all five of the top-half sides who began the evening outside of the play-off places failed to win.

Coventry's last-gasp leveller at Blackburn means the battle for the final two play-off spots is super-congested.

Three points separate Millwall, in fifth, from Preston in 11th. Most of those clubs are struggling for wins.

Among the matches to come at the weekend is Preston hosting Blackburn. That one could be tense.

After 20 goals in six games - including one from the unlikely source of the Coventry goalkeeper - here's what tonight's (rather bonkers) action has done to the Championship table...

    Reading 1-1 Luton

Heroics from 10-man Reading who frustrated promotion chasing Luton, despite Carlton Morris cancelling out Andy Carroll's opener.

Carroll was dismissed for a second bookable offence when he guided home a cross with his hand, turning delight at what looked like a second into despair with his sending-off.

Luton are into the play-offs, but their hopes of deposing Sheffield United in the top two are dented.

Noel Hunt's side drop into the bottom three after that leveller, but that a draw against two of the best in the league in his past two matches as caretaker boss.

The second half performance from Middlesbrough was excellent. It was a lot more positive with an injection of pace.

    Middlesbrough 3-1 Hull

Cameron Archer celebrates scoring for Middlesbrough against HullImage source, PA Media

Boro's second-half rally well and truly quells Hull City, with substitute Isaiah Jones turning the game with his searching pace and skill.

Cameron Archer was outstanding, firing in the second after Hayden Hackney had finally squared things up.

Chuba Akpom scored in his ninth straight home game to seal it, after Allahyar Sayyadmanesh's brilliant header gave Hull the lead.

Plenty to build on for Hull, but surely now Boro at least in the play-offs and with an outside hope of the automatic places.

    Reading 1-1 Luton

Two impressive performances from Reading under Noel Hunt, having held leaders Burnley at the weekend and now on course to do the same to fellow high-fliers Luton.

Too late maybe? They're scrapping away with real heart.

    Middlesbrough 3-1 Hull

Three minutes of added time at the Riverside, where Boro's devastating flurry of goals has knocking the stuffing out of Hull.

They're in the bottom three after that Carlton Morris equaliser.

    Reading 1-1 Luton

Reading are on the defensive, as Luton press for a precious winner.

However, they're still lively on the break, as substitute Kelvin Ehibhatiomhan spectacularly thrashes over the bar.

    Middlesbrough 3-1 Hull

Chuba Akpom is in for his second, it would be his 30th of the season, but Karl Darlow in the Hull goal spreads himself and saves.

Boro not put the cue in the rack just yet.

    FT: QPR 1-1 Norwich

Rangers are now seven without victory, and only have one win in 14 outings at home.

BUT, they managed to avoid a fourth straight defeat at Loftus Road.

That's a minor positive, yet the west Londoners are still in the thick of the relegation battle.

Next up for Gareth Ainsworth's men is a trip to champions-elect Burnley.

Swansea extend their unbeaten run to six games with a fifth win in that run.

Preston miss a chance to cut the gap to the play-off places.

Lilywhites boss Ryan Lowe was sent off late on.

    Wow.

These two play-off hopefuls have to settle for a share of the spoils after Sam Gallagher's first-half effort is cancelled out by Ben Wilson's leveller in almost the last kick of the game.

Blackburn were in control for large spells, but Coventry showed real will and spirit to keep in the game and got their rewards.

Rovers move back to the top six with four games to play, Coventry a point and two places behind - level with rivals West Brom.

    QPR 1-1 Norwich

There's nothing to separate QPR and Norwich at the end.

The point doesn't do much for either side. Norwich fail to make up ground in the hunt for the play-offs.

QPR now have one win in 20 league games and are a point above the relegation zone.

That could change if there's a winner in the game at Reading...

A massive win for Cardiff in their survival bid.

The Bluebirds are a point above the drop zone as things stand - but that could still change.

Watford have one win in six outings and their play-off hopes are fading.

It's four defeats in eight games in charge of the Hornets for Chris Wilder.
