Luton made it 10 games unbeaten in the second tier for the first time since their Division Two title-winning season of 1981-82 with Saturday's win at Rotherham.

Standing in their way of 11 and a step closer to the play-off places are relegation-threatened Reading, who with interim boss Noel Hunt in charge earned a point from league leaders Burnley on Saturday.

The visitors are currently third and a win would take them to 77 points, almost out of the clutches of the chasing play-off place pack.

Reading, in 22nd by virtue of a points deduction, have to get their own job done whilst relying on Luton's fiercest rivals Watford against Cardiff and also praying for good news from Norwich who travel to strugglers QPR.

Could be a nervy atmosphere at the Select Car Leasing Stadium.

GOAL: Swansea 1-0 Prestonpublished at 19:48 British Summer Time 19 April 2023

    Joel Piroe (2 mins)

What did I say about Swansea not having a chance of making the top six?

Top scorer Joel Piroe has given the Swans an early lead against 10th-placed Preston, who started the evening one point off the play-offs.

Joe Allen picks out the Dutchman in the middle of the box and Piroe has time to control and stroke the ball into the bottom left-hand corner for his 17th league goal of the campaign.

Not the start Lilywhites boss Ryan Lowe would have wanted after defeat at Millwall at the weekend.

    QPR 0-0 Norwich

QPR have conceded in the first 10 minutes in five of their past six games.

They held out for almost an hour against Preston on Good Friday, but lost that one 2-0 regardless.

Gareth Ainsworth has rejigged his defence among his four changes tonight, with Aaron Drewe and Jake Clarke-Salter coming into the R's back line.

Four Championship games which affect both ends of the table are getting under way.

    Watford v Cardiff (19:45 BST)

Last week Watford issued a statement to insist that Chris Wilder would remain in charge until the end of the season

Watford just about remain in with a shout of the play-offs, but the latest turn of the managerial merry-go-round has not turned out quite as well as the Hornets would have hoped.

Chris Wilder has just two wins from seven games since replacing Slaven Bilic, and the visit of Cardiff City is effectively a must-win in order to close the four-point gap to the play-offs.

The Bluebirds have work to do to at the bottom, with only goal difference keeping them above Reading and out of the relegation zone.

They are only three goals better off than the Royals, but the Welsh side do have a game in hand on their rivals.

Back-to-back defeats and one win in six have not helped their cause.

It's not quite do-or-die for Sabri Lamouchi's men, who have games against Rotherham and Huddersfield to come, but it's getting pretty desperate.

  6. Can R's halt slide against off-song Canaries?published at 19:40 British Summer Time 19 April 2023

    Image caption,

QPR were top of the Championship on 22 October but have won just two of 26 games since then

QPR's current form makes for rather wretched reading, with the west Londoners six without a win and having lost 10 of their past 12 league games.

That run has seen the R's slip to one point above the relegation zone, with Reading's six-point deduction also handily drawing another team into peril.

Gareth Ainsworth has lost seven of his nine matches since taking charge, and it's one win in 19 league outings stretching back to Boxing Day.

There are few home comforts either. The Hoops have lost their past three at Loftus Road, and have a solitary victory in 13 matches on home soil.

Norwich City make the trip to the capital looking to revive their faltering play-off bid.

One win in seven has seen the Canaries drop to 11th and two points off the top six.

    Swansea v Preston (19:45 BST)

Joel Piroe has 16 league goals for Swansea this season, including three in his past four outings

Swansea are one of the few teams in the Championship seemingly with little to play for, although four victories in a five-match unbeaten run have put them seven points off the play-offs.

Even though my rudimentary maths suggest that the 13th-placed Swans can technically still make the play-offs there is surely no way they can emerge through the pack and finish in the top six given the fixtures remaining.

Let's agree to revisit that situation at full-time.

Preston are a team with a much clearer chance of extending their campaign.

The Lilywhites are 10th but only a point off West Brom, who hold the coveted final play-off berth.

North End's momentum was checked by a 2-0 defeat at fifth-placed Millwall, which ended a run of three straight defeats.

Tonight's game at Ewood Park has all the hallmarks of an old-fashioned gunfight shoot-out in the wild west.

Blackburn, the wily stagers, have been in the play-off fight all season, and yet here come Coventry, ready to snatch it away from them.

It's seventh against ninth, and only goal difference keeps the hosts out of the top six and just a point denies Coventry.

For Rovers, it's the first of a horror run in that evokes Pittsburgh Steelers' four away-game play-off journey to NFL glory in 2005 if they get it right.

Every one of their next five opponents is in the top 10.

After this one, it's just three to go for Mark Robins' Sky Blues, but lose tonight, and hopes could be fading drastically.

  9. One from five at the bottom?published at 19:32 British Summer Time 19 April 2023

At the bottom, Blackpool and Wigan still have hope of salvation, but both look like they will be playing their football in League One next season.

Their goal difference is doing them few favours either.

Reading are in the mire after being handed a six-point deduction but they have a chance to move out of the bottom three tonight.

QPR and Cardiff will be looking to move away from danger after Rotherham and Huddersfield both drew last night.

  10. Two play-off spots up for grabspublished at 19:30 British Summer Time 19 April 2023

Luton and Middlesbrough look to have enough points on the board for a place in the play-offs, and the pair can still catch Sheffield United and gain automatic promotion.

The final two spots in the top six remain up for grabs.

Millwall and Blackburn have faltered in recent weeks, giving hope to the chasing pack and allowing West Brom to move up into sixth last night.

Five of the six teams below the Baggies are in action tonight, and the table could look very different by full-time.

It's the part of the season where every point matters and the pressure is starting to ramp up at both ends of the Championship.

Burnley have already clinched a place in the Premier League and Sheffield United look set to join them, but at least two play-off places are up for grabs and the relegation spots are yet to be filled.

There are six games tonight, which all have something riding on them.

We'll bring you all the action as it unfolds, as the season-ending picture continues to come into focus.

Sooner or later, we'll find out who's still standing in the second tier.

Yes, that's an Elton John reference... because Watford are at home.
