Erling Haaland scored his second hat-trick in five days as Manchester City cruised into the FA Cup semi-finals by hammering Championship leaders Burnley at Etihad Stadium.

Haaland followed his five-goal haul against RB Leipzig in the Champions League by claiming another three to take his tally for the season to 42.

The Norwegian is now just two short of the record jointly held by Ruud van Nistelrooy and Mohamed Salah for the most goals for an English top-flight club in all competitions in the Premier League era.

Julian Alvarez added two goals and substitute Cole Palmer also scored on a sobering night for former City skipper Vincent Kompany, whose Burnley side have surged 13 points clear at the top of the Championship.

Burnley did well in the first half but could not match Haaland's staggering efficiency in front of goal.

City opened up in the second period though, underlining the chasm in class between England's top two divisions.

It will be City's sixth semi-final appearance in seven seasons under Pep Guardiola, and on this form few will argue against them lifting the trophy for only the second time in that period as they retain hopes of completing a Treble-winning campaign.

The draw for the FA Cup semi-finals takes place on Sunday following Brighton's tie against Grimsby Town (14:15 GMT), live on BBC One.

Burnley

Burnley manager Vincent Kompany to BBC One: "The only thing I can say is that [the defeat] takes nothing away from what the lads have done so far [this season]. It’s been a really good experience. As much as it annoys me, I think there are a lot of positives to get out of the first half. Afterwards we just came up against the better side.

"They’re a good team. In the beginning they weren’t at their best and maybe we poked them a bit and woke them up. I’m not saying this game could have gone any differently, but this team can learn a lot from this game.

"What typifies us at Burnley is this typical drive to improve. We have to have an absolute focus on getting better. No rest, use any moment you have to get better.

On Erling Haaland: "My defenders are quick, all of them. As an experienced defender I know exactly where he’s going, but he’s that quick. Good strikers make it seem like every rebound lands at their feet, and he’s one of them."

On facing his former club: "The only thing I’d say about his team is that they were consistent in my time and they’re still consistent now. It says something about the level of the manager. This is the way you learn, in my opinion."

On his reception from the City supporters: "When it actually happens it still takes you by surprise. I can only be grateful. I was pleased to bring all those fans across from Burnley and honoured to receive such a warm welcome from the City fans."

So Manchester City, six-time FA Cup winners, are on course to lift the trophy for the first time since 2019 and are the first side through to the Wembley semi-finals in April.

Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola to BBC One: "It's been a good month with Newcastle, Leipzig, Crystal Palace and today it was a good one, a tough game. They went man for man with only [goalkeeper] Stefan Ortega free.

"We had to play more direct to Erling [Haaland] and the wingers. Second half was much better. I was really impressed.

"It's not a surprise to see what Burnley are doing in the Championship. Next season we will face them [in the Premier League]."

They are playing with great confidence. They know the system. It is all about timing.

Manchester City striker Erling Haaland, speaking to BBC One: "It’s been a good couple of games – important games. 7-0 and 6-0 before the national team break is impressive. I’m really happy.

"Every goal for the team means a lot. It’s an amazing win against a really good Burnley side. I’m really happy and our next game is at Wembley.

"I think we’re in the part of the season where we should be at our best. Of course we should be at our best all the time, but we have to perform every single game. The last couple of games have been finals – that’s exactly what we’ve been doing."

On whether he has set a target for the season: "No, I have not. I’m a striker, I love to score goals, but my focus is not on scoring goals but on getting the chances. If I get the chances, there’s a good chance I’ll score."

Haaland barely had a kick until the first goal. Man City didn't play well in the first 30 minutes.

He might get 50 goals, maybe even 60. It's bonkers.

Burnley can be proud of what they've achieved. They were playing against one of the best if not the best.

They'll be back.

It's the international break next up and Norway will will need Erling Haaland at his best as they play away in Spain in their first Euro 2024 qualifier on 25 March before his country face Georgia three days later.

Scotland and Cyprus are the other nations in that group.

Haaland is a beast. He is a goalscoring machine. He lives and breathes goals.

If he doesn't score he doesn't sleep at night. He wants another one, then another one, then another one.

He's fantastic, and this team must be a dream with the chances they create.

Mark: This game will actually do Burnley good, because Vincent Kompany will see where he needs to recruit in the summer to give them a chance of staying in the Premier League This is probably a very useful reality check

If he keeps this up and stays at City for a few years, he could well end up with a statue outside Etihad Stadium next to Vincent Kompany.

For Burnley, this will be a game to forget about as they're only three wins away from winning promotion and making an instant return to the Premier League.
