Matthew Newman: There are no great teams in international football at the moment. Looking at the players available, and the ability to swap in and out in each position, this England squad is one of the strongest, if not the strongest in the world, but they're not great, yet.

I want to see Toney get on the pitch. We need experience of playing without Kane, in case he gets injured.

Ivan Toney is in form and he offers something very different to Harry Kane.

He's a little bit quicker, takes up really good positions and occupys the central defenders a bit more.

I think he's one of those centre forwards that can create something out of nothing.

  6. 'Football helping people cope'published at 16:26 British Summer Time 26 March 2023

    England v Ukraine (17:00 BST)

    Emanuel Rosu, BBC Sport

As we approach 400 days since Ukraine was invaded by Russia on 24 February last year, football has become one of the few things that can disconnect the nation from the horror and despair.

Ukraine start their Euro 2024 qualifying campaign today, having just missed out on the World Cup with a play-off final defeat by Wales.

Saying that the importance of this game goes beyond the result itself though is a massive understatement, as the people of Ukraine and those at war look to pause their darkest thoughts for two hours of footballing hope.

"Football is still the number one sport in Ukraine and it's helping people cope with what they're going through," former Ukraine striker and manager Andriy Shevchenko told BBC Sport.

"The league was kept alive, a few teams made it in Europe, that helped a lot."

England could have all the top class quality players that the world can offer and Southgate would still play the same starting 11. Kane will never be subbed off unless England are cruising. Sterling guaranteed a spot when fit. Mount and Phillips make the squad no matter how they have been playing. Toney better get used to that seat. He'll be there for a few years to come.

Former England midfielder Steven Gerrard on Channel 4: "It's been a long time coming. If anyone deserves a first start it's James Maddison.

"It comes to the point when you need the England manager to believe in you."

The calm demeanour, the sharp exhale, the run up and clinical finish. It was the same old penalty routine from Harry Kane, only this time it took him to a place no England player has gone before.

By netting from the spot against Italy on Thursday night, Kane fired himself into the record books, scoring his 54th international goal to surpass Wayne Rooney as England's all-time leading goalscorer.

Remarkably, Kane has reached the tally in 39 fewer games than it took Rooney, and the 29-year-old's England career includes an ominous strike 79 seconds into his debut, a World Cup Golden Boot and more than a goal a game in major tournament qualifiers.

Here is when, where and how the Tottenham striker became England's top marksman.

Italy 1-2 England: Kane breaks England goalscoring record.

England captain Harry Kane says it was a "proud moment" for him to break the England goalscoring record.

His penalty and a goal from Declan Rice saw England beat Italy 2-1 to secure a first away victory against them since 1961.

Kane's strike moved him ahead of Wayne Rooney in England's all-time top scorer charts.

James Maddison needs to be able to express himself and get into good positions.

This is his opportunity and he has to take it. I'm excited to see how he links up with other players because he'll have plenty of runs to pick out. It should be easier for him at this level.

England's record goalscorer Harry Kane on Channel 4: "It's been a magical few days after the amazing result the other night. We've had a few days to settle down and recover well to look forward to an important game.

"A lot of messages from friends and family and ex-players. It's been a whirlwind few days. I've been trying to settle down as this one's really important. We need to get this one out of the way then we can enjoy it.

"It will be a special night. I will have my wife and kids with me walking out to have a picture. We've got an important game so I'm trying not to think about it too much."

Before the game today the FA will be making a presentation to the family of Jack Leslie.

In 1925 Leslie earned a call up to represent England. However, he faced adversity because of the colour of his skin, and was deselected and never played for the country.

So before today's match his relatives will be given a posthumous honorary cap to recognise his career and as the FA say 'to right this historical wrong'.

A great result for Kazakhstan in their Euro 2024 qualifier earlier today as they scored two late goals to stun Denmark.

A Rasmus Hojlund double had put the Danes in control but Baktiyor Zainutdinov pulled one back from the penalty spot in the 73rd minute before Askhat Tagybergen and Abat Aimbetov scored two goals in three minutes to put Kazakhstan ahead with a minute of normal time remaining.

Aimbetov was sent off deep in stoppage time for a second bookable offence but Kazakhstan held on for a big win.

To be here today and represent my country I want to say thank you to england for the incredible support. You have been very close to us since the war started.

"Thank you to the Ukrainian soldiers who stay in the font line and defend. They sacrifice their lives. There's so many people losing their lives to defend and stay strong for the freedom of Ukraine. We're mentally very strong in difficult moments and united altogether.

"I think players have strong desire to give all. We are here and representing the country. It means a lot to us."

    Tom Mallows
    BBC Sport

Gareth Southgate has expressed his concern at the apparent lack of English players playing at an elite level and the negative impact it could have on England's success in the future.

The Three Lions boss believes he - or future England managers - may have to start selecting from the Championship because of what he says is a decreasing number of English players in the top flight.

But is Southgate right to be worried? BBC Sport has been analysing the numbers to find out...

Ukraine have lost just two of their last 19 European Championship qualifying matches (W13, D4), losing home and away against Spain in qualification for Euro 2016.

But they haven’t won their opening match in qualifying for any of the last five major tournaments (D4, L1) since beating Belarus in September 2008 in a 2010 World Cup qualifier.
