Brighton have a great opportunity. They've been through a lot in the past but I would say they are favourites here.

The way they've played over the season and with Manchester United coming into the game on the back of a loss to Sevilla, I fancy Brighton.

Brighton seem to have a plan for every eventuality. They had a plan when they lost their manager Graham Potter, they had someone ready to come in straight away. They do their homework, they do their due diligence, they do it correctly.

In every aspect of the club there is a plan if something happens. Whereas at Chelsea there is everything but a plan for the way they have handled their season.

Brighton's players all understand their jobs on the pitch and they are all enjoying it. They're a really good team to watch because they play entertaining football.

Brighton have got some incredible players including one who only four months ago won the World Cup. In every department they have experience, youth and goals from everywhere on the pitch.

Man Utd v Brighton: When the teams met in the 1983 final

It's 40 years since Manchester United and Brighton met at Wembley (twice) in the 1983 FA Cup final. The Seagulls have not appeared in the final since. Back then, Brighton's players travelled to Wembley by helicopter and the two sides drew 2-2 in front of nearly 100,000 fans.

Both teams returned for the replay five days later, United sailing into a 3-0 half-time lead on their way to a 4-0 win.

There is a theory that some Manchester United fans would prefer to lose today than have to face Manchester City in what would potentially be the second leg of a 'Treble' for Pep Guardiola's men.

    That wouldn't make sense.

Surely they would prefer their own team to stand in City's way rather than Brighton.

United found themselves in the same situation in 1977 when they famously beat Liverpool in the FA Cup final.

Former England striker on BBC Radio 5 Live

Manchester United were awful and got what they deserved against Sevilla. But when you look at the bigger picture, it's been a successful season. They have got one trophy in the bag already [Carabao Cup] and if they were to get into the top four, which it looks like they are going to do, then that's progress.

That's huge for them in terms of attracting players next season. They have to be in the top four.

There were a lot of empty seats yesterday but I honestly don't think it's Wembley or a lack of enthusiasm. What I do think is pricing. It's very tough for people to get through at the moment. Energy prices are up, inflation is up. I don't think people have the money if I'm honest.

It's very, very expensive to attend a match these days and some people are being priced out.

There were 69,603 inside Wembley yesterday. With room for 90,000, there were lots of empty plastic red seats. Will there be more watching today?

It's going to be a fascinating semi-final because Brighton are having an unbelievable season. I really like what I see they are doing.

Their manager Roberto de Zerbi has been sent off twice this season. I like his personality, I like he is not prepared to be pushed around by the big boys.

They are so impressive in everything they do in terms of how they defend, how they attack, how they press.

    Peter Schmeichel
Three-time Man Utd FA Cup winner on 5 Live Sunday Breakfast

Manchester United were not great on Thursday night against Sevilla or the Thursday before. But I'd be very sad if fans are judging and remembering the season they have had for those two games.

In many ways those two games exposed Manchester United for really where they are in terms of the depth in the squad, the vulnerability and what needs to be done going forward.

  12. When Brighton were bottom of the Football Leaguepublished at 15:42 British Summer Time 23 April 2023

Brighton v Man Utd (16:30 BST)

Incredible to think Brighton were 30 minutes from dropping out of the Football League 26 years ago. Now they're knocking on the door of Europe and one win from the FA Cup final.

It's not always been this good for the Seagulls.

There was some uncertainty over who would partner Victor Lindelof in central defence this afternoon given Harry Maguire is suspended and both Raphael Varane and Lisandro Martinez are injured.

That team selection from Erik ten Hag suggests Luke Shaw has got the job.

Shaw did well as the left-sided central defender for a couple of games immediately after the World Cup.

A novel approach from the Wembley programme for today's game with two front covers.

This is Brighton's third FA Cup semi-final. They have won one and lost one so far.

In an interview with the programme, Brighton's former Manchester United striker Danny Welbeck recalls some advice from his former United youth coach Paul McGuinness which might serve Brighton well today.

"Play the game, not the occasion."

With everybody fit, I think Manchester United would have a good chance of beating Manchester City in a one-off game - a better chance than Brighton.

Brighton have been brilliant and Roberto de Zerbi is a contender for manager of the year.

For a global and neutral audience, I think it would be a better spectacle [all-Manchester FA Cup final].

If you ask the majority of people, I think we would all think that if it was Man City-Brighton, Man City would win. Manchester United have beaten Manchester City this season.
