They've dealt with two Spanish sides in the Europa league knockout rounds so far this season. If Manchester United want to reach the last four, they need to see off another.

The first leg is under way.

  2. All eyes on Martialpublished at 19:58 British Summer Time 13 April 2023

If Anthony Martial's loan move had worked out differently in the second half of last season, the striker could have been playing for Sevilla tonight.

He scored only one goal for them though, ironically in this competition against Dinamo Zagreb.

With Marcus Rashford out, Erik ten Hag really needs Martial to step up.

  3. History favours Sevillapublished at 19:57 British Summer Time 13 April 2023

Man Utd v Sevilla (20:00 BST)

Manchester United are yet to win against Sevilla in European competition, drawing one and losing one in the Champions League last 16 in 2017-18 and losing in the Europa League semi-final in 2020.

Sevilla have progressed from six of their previous eight European knockout ties (including finals) against English clubs, failing only against Leicester in the 2016-17 Champions League and West Ham in last season's Europa League.

  4. 'Sabitzer is an asset to Man Utd'published at 19:56 British Summer Time 13 April 2023

Former Manchester United goalkeeper on BBC Radio 5 Live

I have to say that Sabitizer has come in from absolutely nowhere, it was a weird signing on many levels. That he wanted to leave Bayern most of all and that Bayern allowed him to leave. I wondered why we needed him.

But he has impressed me so much, I hope that there is a clause in there that we can sign him because he is an asset. When he was on the pitch the other day, he was magnificent. If we sign someone like Sabitizer, you have Eriksen, Casemiro, McTominay and Fred. That is quality.

I can't wait to see Casemiro and Eriksen playing in the same team but at least one player who got the opportunity of the injury and the suspension has definitely taken it.

I was just having a chat with my colleague on Radio Five, talking about the ownership situation when the Spanish radio guys in the seats behind them starting talking.

I had headphones on but I could hear the Spanish guys louder than the people I was talking to, which was an excellent effort.

This could be quite noisy tonight - and that's just in the press box.

  6. Man Utd play 'best football' with Martialpublished at 19:54 British Summer Time 13 April 2023

Man Utd v Sevilla (20:00 BST)

Manchester United boss Erik ten Hag says his side play their best football when Anthony Martial is playing.

Striker Martial, 27, has only played 17 games this season after a string of injuries, including a hip issue that saw him miss almost three months.

He returned off the bench to score against Everton on Saturday and Ten Hag said he can start against Sevilla in the Europa League on Thursday.

"I see how he contributes to this team," said Ten Hag.

"I just point to the stats. The stats are telling you that the moment he is on the pitch, then the time he needs for a goal is really less (than others).

"When he is in the team - I refer to games against Man City, against Liverpool when he's in the team - we play our best football and have our best results."

  7. 'Ten Hag has impressed in a short period of time'published at 19:53 British Summer Time 13 April 2023

Man Utd v Sevilla (20:00 BST)

    Peter Schmeichel
Former Manchester United goalkeeper on BBC Radio 5 Live

Old Trafford is now exciting, something is happening on the football pitch. I'm very very impressed with what the manger has done and what he has made a fan like me believe in in such a short period of time.

We've already been through quite a few managers and there aren't any of them who have made me as optimistic about the future of Manchester United.

  8. Losing focus could be deadly - Ten Hagpublished at 19:52 British Summer Time 13 April 2023

    Man Utd v Sevilla (20:00BST)

    Simon Stone
    BBC Sport at Old Trafford

Sevilla are the Europa League experts.

The Spanish side has won the competition on a record six occasions.

They may not be doing particularly well in La Liga this season but Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag has used his programme notes to stress what is demanded of his players at Old Trafford this evening.

"If we lose focus for even a second, it can be deadly," he said.

"We will require complete concentration and professionalism across both legs of this tie if we are to have hopes of progressing to the semi-finals."

  9. Ten Hag reaches 50 games at Man Utdpublished at 19:50 British Summer Time 13 April 2023

Man Utd v Sevilla (20:00 BST)

Erik ten Hag is taking charge of his 50th game as Manchester United manager tonight. He didn't have the best of starts, losing his first two (with the second that 4-0 mauling at Brentford). But since then, he's started the process of getting the Premier League's most successful club back on track after a fallow period.

His 49 games to date have brought 35 victories at a win percentage of 71.42. For comparison, Pep Guardiola is currently rocking at win percentage of 73.87 at Manchester City.

United have scored 91 and conceded 50 in Ten Hag's stint as boss.

Importantly, the Dutchman has also delivered a trophy, with two more still a possibility this campaign.

  10. 'We know Martial is a fantastic player'published at 19:50 British Summer Time 13 April 2023

Man Utd v Sevilla (20:00 BST)

    Peter Schmeichel
Former Manchester United goalkeeper on BBC Radio 5 Live

It's an important night for Antony Martial. It feels like every time he is fit and playing, we say it is an important night for him or an important start. He has had five different injuries this season

We tend to play quite alright when he is in the team. He came on and scored the other day and that was a positive because he needs that confidence to go and perform.

Martial is not Rashford. It's two different kinds of players and when they are both fit, I really cannot wait to see them play in the same team.

If Martial hits top form, we know he is a fantastic player.

Hopefully Martial can fulfil his potential under Erik ten Hag. We know what the talent is, let's hope he can do the same. With Martial and the talent that he has, even with the injuries that he has had, if I was a new manager coming in I would give him a chance at least.

  11. 'Sevilla's level has dropped'published at 19:49 British Summer Time 13 April 2023

Man Utd v Sevilla (20:00 BST)

    Guillem Balague
Spanish football journalist on BBC Radio 5 Live

Everybody at Sevilla has dropped a level big time.

That is why they are five points away from relegation and battling relegation only 10 months after they were battling to win the league.

  12. 'Not enough intensity'published at 19:49 British Summer Time 13 April 2023

    FT: Gent 1-1 West Ham

Former West Ham winger Joe Cole, speaking on BT Sport, says: "They [West Ham] looked like a team that was not up for it. We're lucky it's still in our hands.

"There was not enough intensity in the play. For a lot of these players this is as close as they will ever come to winning a European trophy.

"West Ham have got away with one tonight."

  13. 'It's up to others' - who will step up to replace Rashford?published at 19:49 British Summer Time 13 April 2023

Marcus Rashford's absence for Manchester United is "an opportunity for others to come to the fore", feels former Celtic and England striker Chris Sutton.

The England striker is enjoying the best goalscoring season of his career but will be absent for "a few games" with a muscle injury.

Sutton told BBC Radio 5 Live's Football Daily podcast that the other attacking talents in United's squad need to take their chance.

"United arguably are now missing their star man," he said. "Of course they will miss him but it's up to others.

"Take Jadon Sancho - who is fit - and he probably needs to play like he has a point to prove and really show up. He's been inconsistent this season. I also really like Anthony Martial - his issue has been his injuries. It's important that he delivers.

"The players clearly respect Erik ten Hag and he has got so much out of this group."

Ex-Chelsea defender Mario Melchiot agreed, saying Ten Hag will want to see more from United's other forwards.

"He looks at individuals and he will be asking Sancho and Antony to work on the space behind the defenders," he said. "They always come inside.

"Then, there's [Wout] Weghorst. He's done the job that Ten Hag needed and that's meant Rashford could move away and do other things.

"Now though, the spotlight is even more on Weghorst to step up and deliver key goals."

  14. Busy Aprilpublished at 19:48 British Summer Time 13 April 2023

Man Utd v Sevilla (20:00 BST)

Jose Luis Mendilibar's Sevilla come into this game off the back of a 2-2 draw with Celta Vigo, in which they led 2-0 but conceded twice late on having had a man sent off. Another red card would follow in the dying seconds. It pretty much sums up their season. That game took place last Friday, meaning they've had a slightly longer period of time than Man Utd to prepare for this one.

United are currently in the middle of a month that sees them play nine times in three competitions. They beat Everton on Saturday in the Premier League and face Nottingham Forest on Sunday ahead of the return leg in Spain next Thursday.

After that is an FA Cup semi-final with Brighton ahead of an important league trip to Spurs and a home game with in-form Aston Villa.

  15. FULL-TIMEpublished at 19:46 British Summer Time 13 April 2023

    Gent 1-1 West Ham

West Ham get a very hard-earned draw but were outplayed for much of the game in Belgium.

Danny Ings had given them the lead in the first-half injury time but the hosts equalised in the 57th-minute through Hugo Cuypers. Gent were unlucky not to win as Gift Orban's spectacular overhead kick bounced off the crossbar.

All set up nicely for the second leg at London Stadium next Thursday.

  16. Postpublished at 19:46 British Summer Time 13 April 2023

    Gent 1-1 West Ham

Gent defender Kamil Piatkowski is shown a red card for sliding in on Lucas Paqueta.

But looking at it again he has got his foot on the ball and produced what looks a superb challenge.

The referee, Anastasios Sidiropoulos, checks the incident to see if it's a penalty.

But it's not a penalty, and it's then not a red card. Piatkowski stays on.

  17. Postpublished at 19:42 British Summer Time 13 April 2023

    Gent 1-1 West Ham

A chance for Michail Antonio in injury time after another key move from Lucas Paqueta, who has made a big difference since coming on.

Paqueta plays it left to Antonio and he hits it first time, looking to curl it into the far corner but can only find the midriff of Davy Roef.
