The Athletic's Adam Crafton says the decision by the Glazer family to extend the process of selling Manchester United with a third round of bidding makes "some sense".
Speaking on BBC Sounds' How To Buy A Football Club podcast, he said: "I can’t claim I predicted this happening but I do think it makes some sense.
"If you have several interested parties who just keep going up in terms of what they are prepared to offer, then why not?
"If you are a seller, just do another round of bidding and see how high they are willing to go. Does that mean there will be a fourth round or fifth round? I don’t really know, if the parties keep going up and showing the inclination to get the asset no matter how high it goes, then why wouldn’t you carry on doing the rounds?
"The flip side is there is a point at which a bidder might turn round and say 'actually I have had enough of these games and I am walking away'. Manchester United also need this resolved before the summer in terms of the way the club operates and what they are able to do in the transfer market, all of these things that your everyday fan is far more interested in."
Meanwhile, Old Trafford will now not be part of England and Ireland’s Euro 2028 bid after being dropped from the original shortlist submitted to Uefa by the five football associations from the UK and the Republic last year.
BBC Sport’s Simon Stone added: "I had initially been led to believe that this whole thing would be concluded by the end of the season and that would allow any new owner to move into the transfer window with some degree of certainty and clarity.
"The understanding is that Old Trafford will not be in the Euro 2028 bid despite it being one of the biggest stadiums. That underlines in itself how far Manchester United have fallen back behind Manchester City and potentially Everton with their new stadium, in terms of infrastructure behind the football club. It is a bit of a blow to Manchester United’s pride.
"You can only assume as it has gone to another round as they haven't got what they wanted out of the process."
The latest episode of How To Buy A Football Club, following the sale of Manchester United, is now available on BBC Sounds.
In episode 12, Simon Stone and Sally Nugent are joined by The Athletic's Adam Crafton to discuss the latest goings on with the takeover at Old Trafford.
The trio give their reaction to news that the Glazer family have opted to extend the process with a third round of bidding.
Man Utd v Sevilla (20:00 BST)
The potential sale of Manchester United continues to rumble on. The bidding has now gone to a third round.
Qatari banker Sheikh Jassim and Ineos owner Sir Jim Ratcliffe both submitted a second bid to buy the Old Trafford club last month, with Finnish entrepreneur Thomas Zilliacus also saying he had submitted a bid. The latter has since withdrawn, calling the process a "farce".
The Glazer family, who bought the club for £790m in 2005, announced they were considering selling in November.
The Americans have established a valuation of £5bn-6bn for United.
Gent 0-1 West Ham
Gent have been the better team for most of the half but West Ham won't care about that as the Londoners have the lead at the break.
Danny Ings scored the goal from Jarrod Bowen's cross but all credit to Vladimir Coufal as his quickly-taken throw-in caught the hosts napping to set up the chance.
It came only a few minutes after West Ham had seen a goal chalked off after a Nayef Aguerd handball following some Sunday League handling from home keeper Davy Roef.
David Moyes will be wanting a lot more from his side but will be delighted at holding the lead.
Gent 0-1 West Ham
That goal came from West Ham's first shot of the match.
Danny Ings
Quick thinking by Vladimir Coufal and his quickly-taken throw-in catches out the Gent defence. Jarrod Bowen puts in a cross across the face of goal and Danny Ings taps into the net at the back post from a few yards out.
It's a VAR check for offside, but this time the decision goes West Ham's way and this one counts. West Ham lead.
Gent 0-0 West Ham
A chance for Gent but Joseph Okumu can only head wide.
Gent 0-0 West Ham
Although the Hammers will be disappointed at the goal being ruled out, that should be the sign for West Ham to swing the ball in at every opportunity after that awful piece of handling from Davy Roef in the Gent goal.
Michail Antonio on the bench will be itching to get on.
Gent 0-0 West Ham
A let-off for Gent goalkeeper Davy Roef and it's back to 0-0.
A VAR check says the ball hit the arm of Nayef Aguerd. No goal.
Davy Roef own goal
Will it be ruled out for a handball from Nayef Aguerd though?
The corner was taken from the right and Gent goalkeeper Davy Roef has made an absolute mess of it. He fumbles the ball, it bounces off Aguerd, then off Roef and across the line.
VAR checking for a handball though.
Gent 0-0 West Ham
A chance for Gent. Sven Kums takes the corner from the left and it's a deep one with Kamil Piatkowski arriving late at the back post and getting up well above Ben Johnson.
But Piatkowski can't keep the header down and the ball flies over the top. Should've done better.
Gent 0-0 West Ham
Angelo Ogbonna is a tough guy and he's back on the pitch despite landing heavily in that challenge with Gift Orban.
Ogbonna is then straight back into it, but catches Orban late and is the first man to see yellow. It's a costly booking for Ogbonna who now misses the second leg at London Stadium next week.
Gent 0-0 West Ham
In the break of play David Moyes has a chat with Danny Ings, with West Ham yet to have a shot on or off target.
Gent 0-0 West Ham
The magic spray has been applied to one of Joseph Okumu's hamstrings and the Gent defender is back in the action.
Now it's West Ham defender Angelo Ogbonna who needs treatment. He had jumped high in a challenge with Gift Orban but landed heavily.
Gent 0-0 West Ham
Jarrod Bowen looks to use his pace and get to the byeline and deliver a cross but he's matched stride for stride by defender Joseph Okumu and it's a goal kick. But it may have come at a cost for Okumu who is now sitting on the turf needing some medical treatment.
Gent 0-0 West Ham
West Ham are on the back foot at the moment and yet to test Davy Roef in the Gent goal. It's another low shot from outside the penalty area for the Belgians through Julien de Sart but, as he should do, Alphonse Areola saves it without too much drama.
Gent 0-0 West Ham
This is a good spell for Gent with Angelo Ogbonna well placed to cover and hack the ball behind for a corner, but West Ham defend it well at the near post.
Gent 0-0 West Ham
Gift Orban blasts the free-kick at goal but the West Ham wall is a solid one and does its job.
Gent 0-0 West Ham
Gent win a free-kick just outside the penalty area in a dangerous position as Flynn Downes brings down Hong Hyeon-seok.
