Vicci Elliot: At the end of the day us Reading fans will go to Huddersfield on Monday and suck it up. After all they have our six-point deduction to thank for staying up.

    The Royals are relegated.

We will fight another day and we will rise again.

But right now, it hurts. Fans, staff, players all hurting.

To add to their poor form Reading were docked six points by the EFL for breaching the terms of a profit and sustainability plan to manage their spending.

Manager Paul Ince, who had successfully guided them to Championship safety last season, said the road ahead was going to be tough. But two games and two defeats later the club sacked him, with five matches remaining.

They have drawn three of their past four fixtures under interim boss Noel Hunt but their decade-long stay in the Championship is now over.

Next season will be Reading's first in the third tier of English football for 21 years.

The former Premier League side's tumble down the table is a crushing blow for a team that enjoyed a brief stint at the top of the Championship after winning four of their opening six games.

They were 10th at the turn of the year - level on points with then sixth-placed Middlesbrough - but a series of injuries coupled with a transfer embargo meant they could not strengthen in January.

The Royals failed to pick up a league victory between the end of December and mid-February and are currently on a 12-game winless run.

  8. Warnock comes to Terriers' rescuepublished at 21:47 British Summer Time 4 May 2023

Just as things were starting to look pretty desperate for Huddersfield... enter Neil Warnock.

The 74-year-old, who had guided the Terriers to promotion to the second tier 28 years ago, cut short a holiday in America to come out of retirement and try and rescue the Terriers.

Despite two 4-0 defeats in his first three games leaving them seven points adrift of safety the veteran gaffer has overseen a run of just two defeats in their past 11 games to secure survival with a game to spare.

During Warnock's spell in charge American businessman Kevin M Nagle has agreed a takeover and there will now be renewed hope of a period of stability for a side who have spent the past 14 seasons either fighting for promotion or trying to avoid relegation.

Warnock has re-iterated he is not interested in taking the manager's job on a permanent basis but has offered to assist the club in their search for a fourth managerial appointment in under 12 months.

So Huddersfield will once again be a Championship side next season.

It's been a tough campaign on and off the pitch for the West Yorkshire side, who were beaten in last season's Championship play-off final by Nottingham Forest.

Influential Spanish head coach Carlos Corberan opted to leave the club out of the blue just over three weeks before the start of the season and first-team coach Danny Schofield was promoted behind him.

However, he won just one of his nine games in charge and was sacked in September to be replaced by Scottish coach Mark Fotheringham.

The former Hertha Berlin assistant was unable to inspire a turnaround in fortunes and was relieved of his duties in February.

Defeat at fellow strugglers Wigan under caretaker Narcis Pelach followed and the Terriers slipped to second bottom, something drastic was needed...

    Unbelievable.

I said before the game that it just took them not being at their very best and finishing wise they weren't.

What a performance. Everyone was magnificent.

It's undeniable the influence that Neil Warnock has had.

    They've done it!

Huddersfield are staying up, but it's heartbreak for Reading - their last hope has been snuffed out.

After showing little in the first half, the Terriers were terrific after the break and at full-time were full value for Danny Ward's stunning winner.

That's five wins in their past eight and one defeat in their past nine for Neil Warnock's men. What a run.
