Chelsea won 19 games in the 2022-23 campaign, setting a new record for wins by a team in a WSL season.

    Utter domination from the Blues.

  3. Chelsea champions once againpublished at 17:59 British Summer Time 27 May 2023

At the top, meanwhile, it's all about Chelsea who fought off the challenge of Manchester United to claim a fourth consecutive Women's Super League title.

After a shock defeat on the opening day of the season at promoted Liverpool, they lost only once more - at Manchester City in March.

Indeed, they dropped just eight points all season and strung together 10-game and six-match winning runs.

United enjoyed their best ever season with second place, while Arsenal claimed the third and final Champions League qualification spot, finishing above Manchester City on goal difference - and it was a brilliant season too for Aston Villa in fifth.

  4. How it finished at the bottompublished at 17:58 British Summer Time 27 May 2023

Confirmation, then, that Reading's eight-year stay in the Women's Super League has come to an end.

Seven defeats in their final eight WSL matches ultimately put paid to their hopes and they will begin next season back in the Championship for the first time since 2015.

Leicester, bottom of the table for much of the season, ended up surviving by five points after an improvement under Willie Kirk.

And it's been a fine return to the top flight for Liverpool, who finish seventh in their first campaign back in the WSL.

    FT: Brighton 0-1 Leicester

Leicester manager Willie Kirk speaking to BBC Sport about City's future: "We've had some good conversations with potential new players.

"There are a lot of players out of contract, so it's a natural progression, which is nicer because nothing will be that forced. There are big plans in place for the summer."

Leicester manager Willie Kirk speaking to BBC Sport: "This is my biggest achievement, because a seven-point turnaround has never been done before. It's fantastic and thoroughly deserved - on today's result but also over the five months [of 2023].

"The players and staff have been exceptional in terms of their openness to change, because we changed a hell of a lot. We've got the rewards from it.

"We had a reset at Christmas. We've constantly been showing the players the table from the 1st of January. We had a couple of friendlies which were really important - we won both, then beat Sunderland convincingly in the cup and beat Brighton.

"At that stage I thought 'right, we're on the right road.' The only doubt I had was when we lost 1-0 to Tottenham, because the players were so convinced they were going to win it that the disappointment was huge. That was when I had to pick them up the most. That was the only time I had any doubt."

Chelsea's Pernille Harder speaking to BBC Sport: "It's been amazing. I have been on the outside with my injury and coming back playing with the team too. I played my part cheering on the outside and cheering them on.

"When I was subbed off it was emotional but I also look back on my time here with so much joy and so many memories I will take with me."

Chelsea defender Magdalena Eriksson speaking to BBC Sport: "I think this one [title win] is one of my favourites. It [is] really special. Everyone has played there part. That's what I'm super proud of and what I'm going to take with me."

On her Chelsea career as a whole: "I think it's a fairytale. It feels like it. Especially with this kind of ending. I couldn't wish for anything more. It's been a journey and we are super proud of and going to take with us."

  13. 'Time to reflect and rebuild'published at 17:37 British Summer Time 27 May 2023

    Reading Football Club

More from Reading boss Kelly Chambers to Sky Sports...

On the future: "We have to have conversations to make sure what is next, which way do they [the club] want to take the women's side forward and then it's about us building a team for next year to step into the Championship ready to compete and bounce straight back up.

"It's not over and this will give us time to reflect and rebuild. We have a staff that are ready to come up fighting and hopefully the club will give us the backing to do that."

On Chelsea boss Emma Hayes' fourth successive WSL title: "Her knowledge of the game is unbelievable - to do that four years on the bounce is phenomenal and she really does deserve it. She has a family and what she has been through with her health issues - to go through all of that and take a team to the title and other cups is phenomenal."

Chelsea manager Emma Hayes, speaking to BBC Sport: "Relief, exhaustion and joy, plus sadness.

"Sadness to lose Pernille [Harder], Mags [Eriksson] and because Kelly [Chambers] is a friend of mine. To win the league while they get relegated pulls on my heartstrings so it's a mixture of emotion. Relief probably top of them.

How do you keep winning? "I don't know. Sometimes I refer to it as a lemon that we've squeezed everything out of and we just keep trying to get a little bit more.

"We find those margins but that is because of the staff in the background. That's the work everybody is doing to keep us at the front of the pile."

Toughest season? "Definitely. Having to recover from a hysterectomy midway through a season is not something most managers will be able to relate to that. Let me tell you, it was really, really tough."

On the celebrations: "Drinks are on me. I'll be ordering the shots! I hope they have a fantastic time - they've earned it!"

  15. 'A tough day but the table doesn't lie' - Chamberspublished at 17:34 British Summer Time 27 May 2023

FT: Reading 0-3 Chelsea - Royals relegated

    Reading Football Club

Reading boss Kelly Chambers to Sky Sports after the Royals' relegation:

"It's a tough day, you can probably see that on my face right now but in terms of the season, the league doesn't lie and at the moment a club like us, we can't compete with the investment other clubs are putting in.

"You only have to look at the January transfer window and the investment other clubs around us had, what injection they had to make sure they stay up.

"It's been a tough season and I'm not going to hide from that but I'm very proud we've been in this league for eight years and every year we've had the lowest budget but we've managed to compete and find ways. It's just a very hard day overall."
