I think so much of it is mentality. They've always had good players but it's been that mentality. That belief that they know they can turn draws into wins is so important.

If Manchester United want to go on one step further they need to keep the good players that they've got. [Batlle and Russo] will be two players they need to keep at the club as they will be hard to replace.

More from Chelsea boss Emma Hayes to Sky Sports...

On counterpart and close friend Kelly Chambers after Reading's relegation: "I'm upset for Kelly - she's heavily pregnant and doesn't need this stress. But to be in this business for 20 years... I often say this but women don't get the chances men do and if I was a club in the top division in this country I would be going after Kelly - sometimes she doesn't get recognition for the work she's done for this football club."

Hayes on her own future: "Naturally every manager is depleted at end of season, I'm knackered, I'm going away, I'm going to chill out and I'm going to be a mum... and I've showed you the art of how to avoid a question!"

Chelsea striker Sam Kerr speaking to Sky Sports...

On chasing Man Utd:"I think at the end of the day it was always in our hands, right? Of course there is abit of pressure but it was the same last year. We knew that if we won every game and took care of ourselves then [we would win].

"I think we like it that way. We play better like that, under pressure. The next step for us is to play like that in the Champions League. To win two trophies is amazing but it would have been great to have brought two more back to Chelsea."

On the missing link to win the Champions League: "I think we weren't far off. We went toe to toe with Barcelona for parts of each leg, and we have had some big players missing, Millie Bright, and Pernille [Harder] wasn't fully fit. So it's tough and the league is getting tougher, but we aren't far off, we really aren't."

Chelsea boss Emma Hayes has been speaking to Sky Sports after a fourth successive WSL title: "What an unbelievable team I've got, lucky me.

"It was really emotional at the end of the game but I was man-marked by the cameraman so I didn't get the chance to let loose with a few tears.

"For us it's not just about building a team to compete, it's about growing - and looking at a wall of six thousand fans today gave me so much joy.

"Some of the players have gone through really tough times with not playing. I have to dispel this misnomer that players aren't happy when they don't play - they have the ability to look after themselves and games start coming around and on days like this they know it's absolutely worth it.

"We are family. These people are as close to me as my family. My entire staff deserve credit and the day as much as anyone."

Vilde Boe RisaImage source, Getty Images

Manchester United midfielder Vilde Boe Risa speaking to BBC Sport: "We did everything we could. Played a good game, scored an important goal and then it was up to Chelsea. We ended second and we are proud of what we have done this season."

Did you have an eye on the Chelsea match? "We were just focusing on ourselves. But some players asked what the score was at half-time. We just focused on the game here and did our best. It's a really good season for us."

What's next? "We are nearly there but we have to keep working. Chelsea is a really good team so we need to make sure we do everything we can to beat them. We are going to do that in the future.

"We all wanted to play in the Champions League and that's really exciting."

  6. 'Chelsea should be scared of us'published at 17:12 British Summer Time 27 May 2023

    Manchester United

    Marc SkinnerImage source, Getty Images

Manchester United manager Marc Skinner speaking to BBC Sport: "We can only control the controllables . We won the game, but we've lost [the title]. Congratulations to Chelsea, they are champions this season and I'm sure they will be aware of us going into next season. The growth we have had is immense. How many times in sport do you get to see a team from its inception 5 years ago to go and qualify for the Champions League? If I was Manchester City, Arsenal and Chelsea, I'd be very scared of us.

On tight margins: "I will always look back at the Chelsea games when we should have had two penalties. That's frustrating. Our job is to help grow the refereeing as well but look, I can be sitting here happy at how far we have taken this team. For our fans, we are going to aim to go into Europe and be successful there. They give me goosebumps just thinking of them. I want to say thank you to every single person because they've been magnificent this season."

How do you grow? "I said at the start of the season that experience would help and the experience we've had this season have been amazing. Chelsea aren't going to stand still so we aren't. We want to keep our talent emerging. They will be very are of us next year. They were this season."

On the futures of Ona Batlle and Alessia Russo: "They're both Manchester United players right now. The negotiations are still ongoing. You can see from my reaction with them, we are absolutely great. If they don't stay then this club will make sure we will move forward. I want to keep them, I want to make that clear. But if they don't stay we will make sure we build a team that will be successful."

    Chelsea

Chelsea striker Sam KerrImage source, Getty Images

Chelsea striker Sam Kerr speaking to Sky Sports: "I think they [title wins] get better each year. They definitely get harder. It makes it so much more sweeter when it is so tight at the top. It's my fourth but it is some people's first, so we'll all celebrate it like it's the first.

On squad rotation this season: "It's been a challenge but I have enjoyed it. It's nice to welcome new players into the team, like I said it is some people's first title here, so it is awesome to do it again. It has been a joy to play with the new players. Hopefully we have a few more coming in.

On questions about her goalscoring form this year: "People are never happy, rihgt? If I'm scoring they say 'it's not about the stats', but when I'm not scoring they then say 'well it's about the stats', so I keep doing whatever wins trophies. I don't really care about what people say about me honestly, I'm with the greatest team in England. I'm happy, the team is happy, so it's not about me, it's about the team.

On Chelsea hitting supreme form: "I think we've shown over the last few years that in the last few games of the season we're a different team. It sounds bad but once you get knocked out of the Champions League, it is easier to be fresh and to prepare for games.

"I don't think people realise but even when we were preparing for City away, we only had 12 hours to really look at that, and one training session. As disappointed as we were, after we got knocked out we then had two days off and it was back to business. Back to winning the FA Cup and the league. We had more time, that's it."

The Foxes lost their first nine games of the season and it has been some turnaround under Willie Kirk.

  9. 'We want to be challenging the top six'published at 17:04 British Summer Time 27 May 2023

    FT: Liverpool 0-1 Man Utd

    Liverpool

Liverpool manager Matt Beard to BBC Sport: "We know they are a good side. It was disappointing with the goal.

"The use of the ball wasn't quite as it has been as of late. It's one of those things.

"We've had a good year this year, coming back up is tough. We were desperate to finish on a positive note for the fans. But you can see their appreciation for us this year.

"We've made big strides since we played them last. As the season has got on we've got better. We need to do more, but it's a process.

"We want to improve on this year. We want to be challenging the top six. We know the ultimate goal is to achieve what Manchester United have done this year.

"It's about improving in the summer and coming back and going again."

Financially, you need some sort of support to give you a chance to compete in the WSL. We've seen that with Reading that they've financially struggled to compete. You have to recruit right now for Bristol City, to give them a chance to compete.

Magdalena Eriksson and Pernille Harder, partners off the pitch, are both leaving Chelsea this summer and they have spoken to Sky Sports of their delight at signing off in style:

"The fans have been amazing, much more than we could expect. It's emotional but it also makes me happy to see them stay to support us both even though we ae leaving," Harder said.

Eriksson: "I think this is my favourite one [title] - the way we have done it this year. I don't think any other team has used every single player in their squad like we have with the amount of games we have had. I think everyone has played their part, everyone has been important.

"I have been trying to live in denial [about leaving] before the game - I didn't want to think about it because it would be too much emotions for me. We still had a job to do today and that was the main thing but as soon as I was subbed off the emotions came out and I feel a bit overwhelmed and I don't really know what to say.

"I think we take so much pride in the environment we create as a team. It's not just about winning, it's about being nice to each other being a family, players stepping up, young players developing and getting better. That's what I'm all for and stand behind that so much."

  13. 'Inquest begins now for Reading'published at 16:54 British Summer Time 27 May 2023

    FT: Reading 0-3 Chelsea

    Vicki Sparks
BBC commentator, speaking on BBC Radio 5 Live

For Reading the inquest begins now.

How do they shape up to life in the Championship? What next for the future of Kelly Chambers?

We saw before kick off that she was given a guard of honour for her 20 years of service to the club, first as player then as sporting director then as manager. She's been such a mainstay of this club.

For so long Reading ticked along as a WSL club, but they have now suffered relegation and face life in the Championship next season.

You have to wonder how different it would have been had they been able to call upon Deanne Rose more often this season.

    FT: Liverpool 0-1 Man Utd

    Siobhan Chamberlain
Ex-England and Man Utd goalkeeper on BBC One

She would be my player of the season. I really hope they can sign her on a new contract. The way she drives with the ball and picks players out has been outstanding this season. The way she sees players' runs, it's a pass with purpose to pick them out.

  15. 'Chelsea's doubles are so difficult to achieve'published at 16:51 British Summer Time 27 May 2023

    FT: Reading 0-3 Chelsea

    Fara Williams
Former England midfielder on BBC Two

It's so difficult to achieve it and they probably don't get the credit they deserve because people get bored of the same team winning year on year. To achieve what they have takes some doing.

  16. 'I feel a bit overwhelmed!'published at 16:50 British Summer Time 27 May 2023

    FT: Reading 0-3 Chelsea

Departing Chelsea skipper Magdalena Eriksson says this has been her favourite trophy win with the club.

"I'm really happy to be saying goodbye after such a season," she tells Sky Sports.

"As soon as I got subbed, the emotions came and now I feel a bit overwhelmed!"

We'll have more from that interview shortly.

  17. 'We maxed out our potential'published at 16:49 British Summer Time 27 May 2023

    FT: Liverpool 0-1 Man Utd

    Manchester United

Manchester United goalkeeper Mary Earps speaking to BBC Sport: "I think it's been good. I think we've maxed out on our potential in terms of running with Chelsea to the wire. It's nice that it's close but we know we've got some way to go. Good that we have got the defensive record too.

"I think it's about us doing it consistently now. We have come so close for a number of seasons but we haven't quite had the team. Hopefully, we can keep the stars we've got and get a couple more and go for silverware more."

Where is the squad lacking? "I really think the squad has done so well this year. We've got a lot of young players who have not played in the pressure moments but we need more and we need experienced internationals to come in and bring quality and know how to grind it out in the tough moments."

Go and have a rest. It's been a long season for all of these players. They need to switch off for a bit. They've got a long summer with the World Cup coming up.

No one expected this from Manchester United. They've overachieved a little bit.

Manchester United goalkeeper Mary Earps speaking to BBC Sport: "Strikers score goals and defenders win championships. I think the whole backline has been incredible. Credit to the full team, we've done a great job."

Where do you need to strengthen? "I'm good regardless. I compete with myself. I think [Sophie] Baggaley has been great too, we have a great dynamic. I think we need a little bit more depth and you can see with Lucia [Garcia] coming off the bench what that does. Let's just get everyone in!"

How has the season been for you? "[I'm] chuffed really, I am really blessed. You work so hard for years to get this kind of stuff. I pinch myself when I'm looking at the cabinet. I'm hungry for success. I want to go and win the Champions League now!"
